What are black mold mites?

Black mold mites are tiny mites, typically of the family Acaridae such as the genus Tyrophagus, that live on and consume mold and mildew. They are extremely small, often around 0.3 to 0.5 millimeters, which puts them right at the edge of what the naked eye can resolve. Individually they look like moving dust; in numbers they appear as a thin, pale film that seems to shift when you look closely.

The “black” in the common name comes from their association with black mold rather than the mites’ own color, which is usually translucent white, cream, or light brown. Some species grow long hair-like setae on their bodies. They thrive in the same warm, damp, organic-rich conditions mold needs: behind appliances, in damp pantries, around water-damaged drywall, in neglected basements, and on stored food that has begun to spoil.
