Best Faucet Water Filters (2026): 6 Picks Compared
The best faucet water filter is the cheapest, fastest way to get filtered water at the kitchen tap without touching the plumbing: unscrew the aerator, thread on the mount, and flip a lever. The catch is that faucet-mount filters only fit certain faucets, their cartridges are small, and the certifications behind them vary more than the near-identical shapes suggest. This page covers only the faucet-mount form factor. If you are open to other types, our broader best water filter comparison covers pitchers, refrigerator filters, countertop RO and whole-house systems.

How we compared: a search for faucet water filters returned 15 Amazon listings. Three were not faucet-mount filters (a replacement cartridge, an under-sink system and a faucet-fed countertop unit), so we compared the remaining 12 on what each listing states: certifications and who issued them, lead claims, cartridge life in gallons and months, faucet compatibility, spray modes and change indicators. We did not lab-test or install any of them. Prices and availability change, so check the live listing.

PUR Plus PFM400H — horizontal faucet mount, WQA + NSF certified (70 substances incl. lead), microplastics, 100 gal / 3 mo, change light
One of Three PUR Listings, the Only Brand Here Stating a Certifier for Lead
Lead is the main reason many people buy a faucet filter, and on this shelf only the PUR Plus listings tie a lead claim to a named certifier. All three PUR listings (this PFM400H, the horizontal PFM350V and the vertical FM2500V) say the filter is WQA certified to reduce lead. The Brita Elite listings say the filter “reduces 99% of lead,” but the certification wording in those listings applies to chlorine taste and odor. The Waterdrop listings describe lead reduction as third-party lab tested.
That distinction matters. The EPA’s consumer tool for lead filters looks for point-of-use filters that an accredited third-party body has certified to reduce lead to 5 ppb or less under NSF/ANSI 53 and 42. The PUR listing does not spell out the standard numbers, so look up the specific filter in the WQA or NSF database before relying on it, but it is the only brand here that gives you a certifier to check.
The trade-off is cartridge life. At 100 gallons or three months, the PUR filter holds less than a third of the Waterdrop FC-01’s 320 gallons. The listing is also clear about fit: faucets with visible external aerators only, not pull-out sprayers or internal aerators. Between the two horizontal PURs, we picked the PFM400H for its chrome finish and longer list of compatibility details; the PFM350V is the same concept in metallic grey.
Pros
- Lead claim backed by a named certifier
- NSF certified for microplastics
- Change light on the unit
- Fits kitchen or bath faucets with external aerators
Cons
- 100-gallon cartridge, the smallest of the brand-name picks
- Specific NSF/ANSI standard numbers not listed
- No fit for pull-out or internal-aerator faucets

2. Brita Elite Advanced (White) — Best for the Longest Time Between Filter Changes

Faucet mount with a carbon-block Elite filter rated for 4 months, three spray options and a change indicator.
Check price on Amazon$32.99 as of Oct 19, 2026 8:58 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price. Why we like it
- 4-month filter life, longest stated in months
- Three spray options, the most on the shelf
- Carbon block certified for chlorine taste and odor
- Filter indicator and tool-free install
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Filter | Brita Elite carbon block |
| Certifications named | Certified to reduce chlorine taste and odor; listing also claims 60+ contaminants including 99% of lead |
| Filter life | About 4 months; gallon rating not stated in listing |
| Spray options | Three |
| Compatibility | Standard faucets only; not pull-out or spray-style |
| Guarantee | 30-day money-back guarantee per listing |
Brita Elite Advanced — faucet mount, carbon block, chlorine taste/odor certified, 4-month life, 3 spray options, filter indicator
The Only Faucet Mount Here With Three Spray Settings and a 4-Month Filter
Three Brita Elite faucet listings sit on this shelf: this white Advanced model with three spray options, a chrome model with two, and a basic white model with no spray settings mentioned. All three share the same 4-month Elite filter, longer than the three-month rating on the PUR and Waterdrop cartridges. Fewer changes per year is the main reason to pick Brita.
The certification language is the reason it is not our top pick. The listing says the carbon block is “certified to reduce chlorine taste and odor” and separately says it “reduces 60+ contaminants including 99% of lead.” It does not name a certifier or a standard for the lead claim. That may simply be how the listing was written, but if lead is the concern, confirm the filter’s NSF/ANSI 53 listing before you buy. Our guide to choosing a lead in water filter covers how to check.
The Brita listings also do not give a gallon rating, only months, which makes it hard to compare with the Waterdrop’s 320 gallons or PUR’s 100. A busy household will hit the capacity limit before the calendar one.
Pros
- Four months between changes
- Three spray settings
- Change indicator and no-tools install
Cons
- Lead claim not tied to a named certification
- No gallon rating stated
- Will not fit pull-out or spray faucets

3. Waterdrop FC-01 (WD-FC-01) — Best for the Most Gallons Per Cartridge

Faucet filter rated 320 gallons or 3 months, certified by NSF International to NSF/ANSI 42 and 372.
Check price on Amazon$19.99 as of Oct 20, 2026 5:29 am GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price. Why we like it
- 320 gallons per cartridge, triple the PUR rating
- NSF International named as the certifier
- Switch between filtered and unfiltered water
- Several adapters included in the box
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Filter | ACF (activated carbon fiber) cartridge |
| Certifications named | NSF/ANSI 42 (chlorine, taste, odor) and NSF/ANSI 372 (lead-free material), by NSF International |
| Filter life | 320 gallons or about 3 months |
| Flow | Fills four 16.9 oz bottles in about a minute, per listing |
| Compatibility | Standard faucets; not pull-out, handheld, spray or sensor faucets |
| Lead claim | Lead reduction tested by a third-party lab, not certified |
Waterdrop WD-FC-01 — faucet mount, ACF cartridge, NSF/ANSI 42 + 372 (NSF International), 320 gal / 3 mo, adapters included
The Highest Gallon Rating on the Shelf, With the Certifier Named
Two Waterdrop faucet listings appear here, the plastic FC-01 and the stainless FC-06, and both rate each cartridge at 320 gallons. That is more than three times the PUR’s 100 gallons, and the Brita listings give no gallon figure at all. Both Waterdrop listings name NSF International as the certifier for NSF/ANSI 42 and 372, which is clear, checkable wording.
Be precise about what those standards mean. NSF/ANSI 42 covers chlorine, taste and odor. NSF/ANSI 372 covers the lead-free materials in the filter itself. Neither is a lead-reduction certification. Waterdrop describes its lead reduction as third-party tested, so a household that needs certified lead reduction should look at the PUR. For a household on treated city water that dislikes the chlorine taste, the FC-01 delivers the most filtered water per cartridge.
Waterdrop is unusually direct about compatibility: no pull-out, handheld, spray-style or sensor faucets, and it invites buyers to send a photo of their faucet if unsure. The listing states it does not reduce TDS.
Pros
- 320 gallons per cartridge
- Certifier and both standards named
- Simple filtered or tap switch
Cons
- No certified lead reduction
- No change indicator mentioned
- Plastic body

4. PUR Plus Vertical FM2500V — Best Vertical Mount for Tight Sinks

Vertical PUR faucet mount with the same WQA lead-certified PUR Plus filter and a change light.
Check price on Amazon$29.99 as of Oct 20, 2026 5:29 am GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price. Why we like it
- Vertical shape hangs below the spout
- Same WQA lead certification as the horizontal PUR
- Filter change light
- Works with external-aerator faucets
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Filter | Genuine PUR Plus 3-in-1 filter |
| Certifications named | WQA certified to reduce lead; NSF certified for microplastics, chlorine and 70 substances |
| Filter life | Up to 3 months or 100 gallons |
| Indicator | Filter change light |
| Compatibility | Most standard faucets; not pull-out or handheld models |
| Size / weight | About 5.4 x 6.4 x 2.8 in; 1.2 lb |
PUR Plus FM2500V — vertical faucet mount, WQA lead cert, NSF microplastics, 100 gal / 3 mo, change light, grey
The Only Vertical Faucet Mount From a Brand That Names a Lead Certifier
Faucet filters come in two shapes. Horizontal units, like the PFM400H, stick out sideways from the spout. Vertical units hang down. The FM2500V is the only vertical PUR on the shelf, and the shape matters at a shallow sink or a faucet set close to the backsplash, where a sideways canister can bump the wall.
Functionally it uses the same PUR Plus filter, with the same WQA lead certification, NSF microplastics claim, 100-gallon life and change light as the horizontal models. It is a fit-and-feel choice. The trade-off of a vertical mount is clearance: a tall canister under a short spout leaves less room to fill a pot.
PUR filters are also the most widely copied on this shelf. One listing is a third-party replacement cartridge sold as compatible with nearly two dozen PUR mounts, including the FM2500V. It names its own NSF/ANSI 42 and 372 certification but not lead, so a generic refill may not carry the lead certification that made you choose PUR.
Pros
- Vertical design suits shallow sinks
- WQA lead certification
- Change light
Cons
- 100-gallon cartridge
- Less pot clearance under short spouts
- Generic refills may lose the lead certification

5. Waterdrop FC-06 (WD-FC-06) — Best Stainless Faucet Filter With Spare Cartridges

304 stainless faucet filter with four 320-gallon cartridges in the box and a 360-degree rotating outlet.
Check price on Amazon$45.11 as of Oct 19, 2026 8:58 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price. Why we like it
- Only certified pick with a 304 stainless body
- Four cartridges included, about a year of filters
- Same NSF/ANSI 42 and 372 certification as the FC-01
- Outlet rotates 360 degrees
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Filter | Waterdrop faucet cartridge; four in the box |
| Certifications named | NSF/ANSI 42 and NSF/ANSI 372, by NSF International |
| Filter life | Up to 320 gallons or 3 months per cartridge |
| Flow | 0.5 GPM; fills a cup in about 6 seconds |
| Body | 304 stainless steel, joint-free deep-drawn housing |
| Compatibility | Standard faucets; not pull-out, handheld, spray or sensor faucets |
Waterdrop WD-FC-06 — 304 stainless faucet filter, 4 cartridges, NSF/ANSI 42 + 372, 320 gal / 3 mo each, 0.5 GPM, 360° rotation
The Only Faucet Filter Here Sold With a Year of Cartridges and a Stainless Housing
Most faucet mounts are plastic, and the FC-06 is the only listing with a named certification that uses a 304 stainless housing. It also ships with four cartridges, the most among the certified listings; at Waterdrop’s three-month rating, that is roughly a year of filters. The PUR and Brita picks include one or two. (Two uncertified multipacks include more refill elements, but without any named standard.)
The certifications and cartridge rating mirror the FC-01: NSF/ANSI 42 and 372 by NSF International, 320 gallons per cartridge, lead reduction described as tested rather than certified. The listing gives a flow figure, 0.5 GPM, which is modest compared with the faucet’s normal flow and typical of faucet filters. The 360-degree rotating outlet helps aim the stream into a bottle or pet bowl.
The same compatibility limits apply: standard faucets only. The listing does not mention a filter change indicator, so mark the install date or set a reminder.
Pros
- 304 stainless steel body
- Four cartridges in the box
- Certifier named for 42 and 372
Cons
- No certified lead reduction
- 0.5 GPM flow
- No change indicator stated

6. Brita Elite Faucet System (Chrome, 2 Filters) — Best Chrome Finish With a Spare Filter

Chrome Brita faucet mount with two 4-month Elite filters, two spray options and a filter indicator.
Check price on Amazon$35.29 as of Oct 19, 2026 8:58 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price. Why we like it
- Two Elite filters, about 8 months of use
- Chrome finish matches most kitchen faucets
- Two spray options plus filtered stream
- Filter indicator and tool-free install
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Filter | Brita Elite carbon block; two included |
| Certifications named | Certified to reduce chlorine taste and odor; claims 60+ contaminants including 99% of lead |
| Filter life | About 4 months per filter; gallons not stated in listing |
| Spray options | Two |
| Compatibility | Standard faucets only; not pull-out or spray-style |
| Size / weight | About 9.8 x 6 x 2.4 in; about 1 lb |
Brita Elite chrome — faucet mount, 2 Elite filters, 4 months each, 2 spray options, indicator, chlorine taste/odor certified
The Only Brita Faucet Listing That Includes a Second Filter
Of the three Brita Elite listings, this chrome model is the only one that ships with two filters, which covers roughly eight months at Brita’s four-month rating. It has two spray options rather than the Advanced model’s three, and the chrome finish blends with most kitchen faucets better than the white housings.
The certification caveats are the same as the Advanced model: chlorine taste and odor certification is stated, and the 99% lead claim is not tied to a named standard in the listing. Brita also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee across its faucet systems, per the listing, which helps if the mount does not fit your faucet.
As with every faucet mount here, fit is the main risk. Brita says standard faucets only, with no pull-out or spray-style models.
Pros
- Spare filter in the box
- Chrome finish
- 4-month filter life
Cons
- Lead claim not tied to a named certification
- Two sprays versus three on the Advanced
- No gallon rating

Will a faucet filter fit your faucet?
Every brand-name listing on this shelf has the same fit warning, and it decides the purchase before any spec does. Faucet-mount filters thread onto the faucet where the aerator was, so they need:
- A removable external aerator. PUR says “visible, external aerators” only. Faucets with hidden or cache aerators usually need an adapter, if they work at all.
- A fixed spout. Pull-out, pull-down, handheld and spray-style faucets are excluded by every brand-name listing here; Waterdrop also excludes sensor faucets.
- Room under the spout. A horizontal canister needs side clearance; a vertical one needs vertical clearance.
Unscrew the aerator before buying. Check whether the faucet has male or female threads, then confirm the box includes a matching adapter. Waterdrop lists adapters in the box; the uncertified multipacks on this shelf give only faucet diameter ranges or thread sizes.
If your faucet is a pull-down model, a faucet mount is the wrong form factor. An under-sink filter treats the cold line without touching the spout; see our under sink water filter guide. A pitcher is the other no-fit-risk option, covered in our water filter pitcher guide.
Lead claims on faucet filters: what the wording means
Three kinds of lead wording appear on this shelf:
- Certified, with a certifier named: PUR Plus (“WQA certified to reduce lead”).
- Claimed, without a named certification: Brita Elite (“reduces 99% of lead”).
- Lab-tested, not certified: Waterdrop (“tested by third party laboratory”).
The EPA advises that anyone using a filter for lead should use one certified to remove lead, follow the directions on installation and replacement, and not run hot water through the filter. Its consumer tool looks specifically for filters certified to reduce lead to 5 ppb or less under NSF/ANSI 53 and 42. The CDC adds that you can look up any product in the certifier’s database. Our guide to filters for lead in water walks through that lookup.
Four lesser-known listings on the shelf, including three multipacks and a swivel extender, make broad claims about heavy metals or softening hard water with no named certification, which is why none of them made the list.
Cartridge life, cost of ownership and daily habits
Faucet-mount cartridges are small, which is why their ratings range from 100 to 320 gallons, or three to four months. Two habits stretch them.
First, use the bypass. Every pick has a lever or switch to send unfiltered water out of the faucet for dishwashing and hand washing. Filtering only drinking and cooking water keeps the gallon count down and stretches each cartridge.
Second, never run hot water through it. The EPA says plainly not to run hot water through a filter, and every listing here is built for cold water. Use cold water for drinking, cooking and baby formula, as the EPA also recommends, and let the tap run briefly if water has been sitting in the pipes.
Track the change date. The PUR and Brita picks have indicators; the Waterdrop picks do not mention one. A cartridge used past its life, the EPA warns, can become less effective. If you find yourself replacing cartridges every few weeks, a higher-capacity format makes more sense; the activated carbon guide in our carbon water filter article explains why capacity tracks carbon volume.
When a faucet filter is not enough
A faucet filter treats one tap and one problem: taste, odor and, with the right certification, lead. It does not soften water, does not lower dissolved solids, and is not designed to remove germs. The CDC notes that most home filters like pitcher and fridge filters are not designed to remove germs, and the same is true of these faucet mounts.
Older plumbing is where a filter is often a stopgap. The EPA notes that lead pipes are more likely in homes built before 1986, and that brass or chrome-plated brass faucets and lead solder can add lead even without a lead service line. It also recommends cleaning the faucet aerator regularly, because lead particles can collect there. If a test confirms lead, a filter protects drinking water while you plan a plumbing fix. Frequently asked questions
What is the best faucet water filter?
For most kitchens with a standard faucet, the PUR Plus PFM400H is the strongest pick on this shelf because its listing ties lead reduction to a named certifier, WQA, and adds NSF certification for microplastics. If you mainly want better taste and the most water per cartridge, the Waterdrop FC-01 rates each cartridge at 320 gallons.
Do faucet water filters remove lead?
Some are certified to, and some only claim it. On this shelf, only the PUR Plus listings name a certifier for lead reduction. The EPA recommends using a filter certified to reduce lead and points to filters certified under NSF/ANSI 53 and 42 to reduce lead to 5 ppb or less.
Will a faucet filter fit a pull-down faucet?
Almost never. Every brand-name listing here excludes pull-out, pull-down, handheld and spray-style faucets, and Waterdrop also excludes sensor faucets. A faucet filter needs a fixed spout with a removable external aerator. For pull-down faucets, consider an under-sink filter or a pitcher instead.
How long do faucet filter cartridges last?
On this shelf, ratings run from 100 gallons or 3 months for PUR, to about 4 months for Brita, to 320 gallons or 3 months for Waterdrop. Use the bypass lever for dishwashing to stretch cartridge life, and replace at whichever limit comes first.
Can you run hot water through a faucet filter?
No. The EPA advises not running hot water through a filter, and faucet filter listings are designed for cold water. Switch to unfiltered mode before running hot water, and use cold water for drinking, cooking and baby formula.
