What are the common types of mold on wood?

Homeowners typically encounter a few categories on wood. Surface molds β€” often Cladosporium, Penicillium, or Aspergillus species β€” appear as green, black, white, or gray fuzzy or powdery growth that sits on the wood and can frequently be cleaned off non-structural pieces. Black mold, including Stachybotrys, shows up on wood that has stayed wet a long time and looks dark and sometimes slimy. White mold appears as a fuzzy or stringy white coating and is sometimes mistaken for efflorescence or wood-rot mycelium. Surface mold versus wood rot
