Finding the best fire pit starts with how you plan to use it. A plain steel bowl suits a few people and a bag of marshmallows; a 3-in-1 grill table suits a crowd that wants to cook; a folding pit suits a garage with no spare corner. Fuel matters too, because wood, low-smoke wood and propane behave very differently under Colorado fire restrictions. Below are eight picks, each matched to a specific job, then a buying guide that covers clearances, decks, smoke, carbon monoxide and the burn rules Front Range homeowners deal with every season.

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

How we compared: we compared 17 current Amazon listings for backyard fire pits, including round bowls, square fire tables, 3-in-1 grill tables, a folding pit, two low-smoke designs and one propane fire table, on what each listing states: size, weight, material, included spark screen, lid or cover, grill hardware, assembly and warranty. We did not lab-test or handle any of these products. Prices and availability change often, so check the current listing before buying.

Hykolity WHP31 — 31 in. steel bowl, 24.9 lb, 21 in. swivel grate, spark cover, poker, 1-yr warranty

Grilling and a Stated Warranty in One Mid-Size Bowl

Most of the wood-burning listings on this shelf promise some kind of cooking feature, but they split into two camps. Two square fire tables say they can be used as a grill and then note in the same listing that the grill grate is not included. The large 3-in-1 tables do include grates but run 35 to 43 inches across. The WHP31 sits in the middle: a 31-inch bowl with a grate that is in the box, swivels out of the way and moves up or down.

It is also one of only three listings out of 17 that state a warranty at all, and two of those three are Hykolity models. A 1-year warranty on a steel fire pit is not long, but it is more than most of the shelf commits to in writing. The listing describes the assembly as four legs plus an outer steel ring, with no extra tools to buy.

What the listing does not say: it gives no steel thickness and no heat-resistance rating for the coating, and it does not list clearance distances. The product dimensions also show a 19-inch width figure that does not match the 31-inch diameter in the feature text, so measure your patio against the larger number.

Pros

  • Grill grate included, not sold separately
  • Spark cover and poker in the box
  • Written 1-year warranty
  • Mid-size footprint fits most patios

Cons

  • No steel gauge or coating spec given
  • No lid to convert it into a table
  • Dimension fields in the listing disagree

2. IBGUC SFP5 — Best Simple Bowl With Tool-Free Setup

Best simple bowlIBGUC SFP5

28-inch round steel fire bowl with a tight-mesh spark screen, hooked poker, tool-free assembly and a 1-year warranty.

Why we like it

  • Tool-free modular assembly
  • Deep 28-inch bowl for full logs
  • Poker hooks the hot screen from a distance
  • Stated 1-year warranty
Specification Details
Size 28 in. diameter x 17 in. tall
Weight 17 lb
Material Fire-resistant steel with a multi-layer rust-inhibiting black finish
Spark control Tight-mesh spark screen
Tool 20.5 in. poker with a screen-lifting hook and hanging loop
Model / warranty SFP5; 1-year warranty

IBGUC SFP5 — 28 in. x 17 in. steel bowl, 17 lb, mesh spark screen, 20.5 in. hooked poker, 1-yr warranty

The Only Listing That Specifies Its Poker

Nearly every wood pit on the shelf throws in a poker, and 11 of the 17 listings mention a spark screen or mesh cover. The SFP5 is the only one that tells you how long its poker is, 20.5 inches, and explains that the hook end is for lifting the hot screen. That detail matters more than it sounds: lifting a screen off a live fire is when hands get closest to the flames.

The SFP5 is also the only listing that names gravel as a surface it is built to sit on, alongside grass and sand. It is a plain open bowl with no grill, no lid and no table, so it suits buyers who want a fire to sit around rather than a cooking station. Compared with the Gas One pick below, it is larger (28 vs 21.5 inches) but still light at 17 pounds.

The listing does mention decks as a use location. Treat that as marketing rather than a clearance rule; see the deck section of the buying guide before putting any wood-burning bowl on wood decking.

Pros

  • Assembles without tools
  • Light for a 28-inch bowl
  • Hooked poker for safer screen removal
  • Written 1-year warranty

Cons

  • No grill or cooking grate
  • No lid or weather cover included
  • Steel thickness not stated

3. OutVue 36-Inch 3-in-1 — Best Grill Table With a Rain Cover

Best grill table with coverOutVue 36 in. 3-in-1

36-inch wood fire pit with two swivel grills, a lid that becomes a table, vent screens and a round waterproof cover.

Check price on Amazon$99.99 as of Oct 21, 2026 4:13 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price.

Why we like it

  • Two swivel, height-adjustable grills
  • Lid turns it into a 36-inch table
  • Waterproof cover included
  • Mesh screens over the side vents
Specification Details
Overall size 36 x 36 in.; height listed as both 26 and 28 in.

Wood capacity Up to 20 lb per the listing
Cooking Two removable grills that swivel 360 degrees and adjust in height
Included Lid, poker, round waterproof cover, 2 grates, hardware
Weight / warranty Not stated in listing

OutVue 36 in. 3-in-1 — 24 in. bowl, 20 lb wood capacity, 2 swivel grills, lid-table, waterproof cover

The Only Grill-and-Table Unit That Ships With a Rain Cover

Four listings on the shelf are full grill tables, meaning they include cooking grates and a lid that turns the pit into a table: this OutVue, its 42-inch sibling, the Hykolity 35-inch and the Wisteria Lane 43-inch. Of those four, this is the only one that also includes a waterproof cover. The 42-inch OutVue listing says plainly that its cover is not included.

A cover matters on the Front Range. Hail, spring snow and freeze-thaw cycles are hard on powder coat, and water sitting in a steel bowl turns ash into a corrosive sludge. The cover will not make the pit rust-proof, but it buys time between repaints.

The listing gives two different heights and no weight, and it warns not to fully tighten screws until every piece is connected. At 24 inches, the fire bowl is the same size as the 35-inch Hykolity’s bowl, so the extra outer diameter is table space, not fire.

Pros

  • Cover, lid and two grills all included
  • Table surface seats 6 to 8 per the listing
  • Vent screens to contain sparks
  • Replacement parts offered by the seller

Cons

  • Weight not stated
  • Conflicting height figures
  • Smaller wood capacity than the 42-inch model

4. Wisteria Lane ZWS001 — Best for Groups of 8 to 10

Best for big groupsWisteria Lane ZWS001

Why we like it

  • Largest wood-burning footprint on the shelf
  • Two grill plates rotate and adjust in height
  • Surrounding mesh gives a 360-degree flame view
  • Screwdriver included for assembly

Cooking Two removable grill plates, 360-degree rotation, adjustable height
Included Lid, poker, 2 grill plates, hardware, screwdriver, manual
Model / warranty ZWS001; warranty not stated in listing

Wisteria Lane ZWS001 — 43 in. x 32 in., 37.4 lb, 2 rotating grill plates, lid-table, mesh surround

The Biggest Wood-Burning Pit Here

At 43 inches across, the ZWS001 is the largest wood-burning unit on the shelf; only the propane Ciays table matches that length, and it is a rectangle. The OutVue 42-inch is the closest wood rival and says it holds up to 30 pounds of wood. Wisteria Lane does not give a wood capacity, so compare on bowl volume once you see the unit.

The two grill plates rotating independently is a practical detail: one can sit over the flames while the other holds food off direct heat. The listing even advises laying aluminum foil on the plates when grilling, which suggests they are not meant as a fine cooking surface.

This is a newer listing, with a release date in May 2026, and it states no warranty. A 43-inch pit also needs a large non-combustible pad and a lot of open space around it, which narrows where it can safely sit.

Pros

  • Room for a large circle of chairs
  • Independent grill plates
  • Lid converts it to an outdoor table
  • Assembly tool included

Cons

  • No warranty stated
  • New listing with little track record
  • Needs a large non-combustible pad
  • Wood capacity not given

5. Gas One FP-215 — Best for Small Yards and Light Lifting

Best small fire pitGas One FP-215

21.5-inch alloy steel wood fire pit with a ventilated mesh lid, ring handle and fire picker, about 11.8 pounds.

Check price on Amazon$49.99 as of Oct 21, 2026 4:13 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price.

Why we like it

  • Lightest full-size bowl that states a weight
  • Mesh lid with a ring lift handle
  • Fire picker included
  • Small footprint for tight patios
Specification Details
Size 21.5 in. diameter x 20 in. tall with lid
Weight About 11.8 lb
Material Alloy steel with high-temperature paint
Spark control Mesh lid with circular handle
Model / warranty FP-215; warranty not stated in listing

Gas One FP-215 — 21.5 in. alloy steel bowl, about 11.8 lb, mesh lid, fire picker

The Lightest Full-Size Bowl That Lists a Weight

Several listings leave weight out entirely. Of those that give one, the FP-215 is the lightest at roughly 11.8 pounds, setting aside a tiny tabletop burner that is not a backyard fire pit. The next lightest is the IBGUC at 17 pounds; the grill tables run from about 25 to 40 pounds where stated.

That makes it the pick for anyone who stores the pit in a shed between uses or needs to carry it across a yard alone. The shelf also includes a 23-inch Gas One FP-210 that drops the mesh lid; for a wood fire, the lid version is the better buy, since a screen over the fire is basic outdoor fire safety advice.

The trade-off is size and capacity. A 21.5-inch bowl holds short logs and suits two to four people. The listing says nothing about the steel thickness or a warranty.

Pros

  • Easy to move and store
  • Mesh lid included
  • Fits small patios and pads

Cons

  • Small bowl means short logs
  • No warranty stated
  • No grill or table function

6. LTSEAME 22.5-Inch Portable — Best for Breaking Down and Storing

Best for compact storageLTSEAME 22.5 in.

Check price on Amazon$46.74 as of Oct 21, 2026 4:13 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price.

Why we like it

  • Splits into 8 flat panels
  • Storage bag included
  • Cut-out panels feed air to the fire
  • Low 10-inch profile
Specification Details
Size 22.5 x 20 x 10 in. assembled (hexagon)
Construction Eight separate iron panels with a high-temperature coating
Included Storage bag; this version has no grill
Weight Not stated in listing
Warranty Not stated in listing

LTSEAME 22.5 in. — 8-panel coated iron hexagon, 22.5 x 20 x 10 in., storage bag, no grill

The Only Full-Size Wood Pit Here That Packs Into a Bag

Every other wood bowl on the shelf assembles once and stays assembled. The LTSEAME comes apart into eight panels and goes into an included storage bag, which suits townhome owners, renters and anyone who wants the patio back between fires.

Two things to weigh. First, there is no spark screen mentioned in this listing, while 11 of the 17 listings mention a screen or mesh cover. You may want to buy a screen separately or keep this pit for calm nights. Second, at 10 inches tall the fire sits low and close to whatever is under it, so a non-combustible surface matters even more.

The listing does not give a weight or warranty, and it names the size option as one without a grill.

Pros

  • Stores flat in its bag
  • Quick assembly and breakdown
  • Good airflow through panel cut-outs

Cons

  • No spark screen mentioned
  • Low height puts heat near the ground
  • Weight and warranty not stated

7. OutVue 27-Inch Smokeless — Best for Lower-Smoke Wood Burning

Best lower-smoke optionOutVue 27 in. Smokeless

Check price on Amazon$153.89 as of Oct 21, 2026 4:13 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price.

Why we like it

  • Internal airflow design to cut smoke
  • Stainless steel body
  • Lift-out ash tray for cleanup
  • Waterproof cover and poker included
Specification Details
Size 27 in. diameter x 19.2 in. tall
Weight 47.5 lb
Material Stainless steel
Fuel Wood or pellets
Included Waterproof cover, poker, removable ash tray
Placement note Listing says not to use on grass or wooden floors

OutVue 27 in. Smokeless — stainless steel, 47.5 lb, wood or pellets, ash tray, waterproof cover

One of Only Two Low-Smoke Designs on This Shelf

Only two of the 17 listings in this search describe a low-smoke design: this OutVue and a tiny tabletop burner. The OutVue is the one sized for a backyard, with the listing claiming room for 7 to 10 people. It is also the heaviest wood unit here at 47.5 pounds, largely because stainless steel replaces the painted steel used elsewhere.

To its credit, the listing calls itself low smoke rather than smoke free, and its safety note says not to use it on grass or wooden floors. That is more honest placement guidance than most of the shelf offers.

If smoke drifting toward neighbors or into open windows is your main worry, our best smokeless fire pit comparison covers eight low-smoke designs in more depth, including how the double-wall secondary burn works.

Pros

  • Less smoke than an open bowl
  • Stainless steel resists corrosion
  • Cover and ash tray included
  • Clear placement warning in the listing

Cons

  • Heaviest wood unit on this shelf
  • No spark screen mentioned
  • No grill or cooking surface

  • 60,000 BTU stainless steel H-burner
  • Glass wind guard protects the flame
  • Cover turns it into a dining table
Specification Details
Size 43 x 25 x 25 in. rectangle

Certification Not stated in this listing

Ciays CIFPT53B-43 — 60,000 BTU propane table, 43 x 25 x 25 in., 63.9 lb, wind guard, glass stones

The Only Gas Unit in a Wood-Heavy Search

A search for fire pits is dominated by wood burners; this Ciays table is the only propane unit that came up. It earns a spot because propane solves three wood problems at once: no smoke for the neighbors, no sparks and no ash to dispose of. It is also the option most likely to stay usable when local rules restrict wood fires, though that is not guaranteed.

One caution from reading the listing: this version does not name a safety certification, while other Ciays fire tables in the same family do name CSA. Check the rating plate before buying. Our best propane fire pit roundup compares seven gas units, including CSA-certified tables and portable bowls with flame-failure shutoff.

Pros

  • No smoke, sparks or ash
  • Highest heat output on this shelf
  • Wind guard for breezy evenings
  • Table function when the fire is off

Cons

  • Certification not named in this listing
  • Needs a propane tank and leak checks
  • Heavy at about 64 lb

Wood, low-smoke wood or propane: choosing a fuel

The fuel decision shapes everything else, so make it first.

  • Open wood bowls give the classic crackle and the most heat per dollar of hardware. They also produce the most smoke and sparks, need a spark screen, and leave ash that stays hot long after the flames die.
  • Low-smoke (smokeless) wood pits use a double wall: air drawn in at the bottom heats between the walls and exits through holes near the rim, feeding a second burn of the smoky gases above the fire. They reduce visible smoke once the fire is hot, but they are not smoke free, especially while lighting or when fed damp wood.
  • Propane fire pits and tables trade crackle for convenience: a knob, a flame, no ash. Output is listed in BTU, and the hose, regulator and tank need regular checks.

The EPA notes that the biggest health threat from wood smoke is fine particles that can irritate the eyes and lungs, worsen asthma and affect people with heart disease. If anyone in your household or next door is sensitive to smoke, a low-smoke pit or propane is the kinder choice.

Specs that matter and how to read them

Bowl diameter vs overall diameter

Listings for 3-in-1 tables usually lead with the outer diameter, which includes the table rim. The fire bowl is often much smaller: the OutVue 36-inch has a 24-inch bowl, the same as the Hykolity 35-inch. Bowl size determines log length and heat; outer size determines how much patio it eats.

Weight and wood capacity

Heavier steel generally lasts longer and resists tipping, but few listings state a steel gauge. Where weight is stated it is the best proxy you have. Wood capacity claims (20 pounds for the OutVue 36, 30 for its 42-inch sibling) help with comparisons inside a brand but are not standardized.

Spark screens, lids and covers

These are three different parts. A spark screen sits over a live fire. A solid lid sits on a cold pit and often doubles as a table. A waterproof cover keeps rain and snow out. Check the listing for each one separately; several units include one and not the others.

Firewood quality

The EPA’s wood-burning guidance says wood burns best at a moisture content below 20 percent, recommends seasoning wood for at least six months, and lists what never to burn: trash, painted or pressure-treated wood, plywood and particle board. A firewood moisture meter takes the guesswork out.

Safety: clearances, decks and carbon monoxide

Clearance from the house

The U.S. Fire Administration says to use fire pits and outdoor fireplaces at least 10 feet from your home or anything that can burn, to use a metal screen over wood-burning fires, to watch children closely and to put fires out before leaving the backyard. Your fire pit’s manual may require more space; follow whichever distance is greater. Ten feet also needs to account for eaves, pergolas, overhanging branches, fences and the stack of firewood beside the pit.

Decks and surfaces

Never set a wood-burning fire pit directly on a wood or composite deck unless the manufacturer permits it and you use a listed heat shield or pad designed for that pit. Radiant heat and falling embers can scorch or ignite decking from below. A concrete pad or a properly built concrete patio is the safest base; dry grass under a pit is a wildfire starter.

Ash and putting the fire out

The EPA’s safe-burning tips say to remove ashes into a covered metal container stored outdoors on a non-combustible surface, and to keep a fire extinguisher handy. Our guide to the best fire extinguisher for home explains which ratings cover wood fires.

Carbon monoxide

The CPSC notes that carbon monoxide comes from the incomplete burning of fuels including wood, charcoal and propane, and warns never to use portable fuel-burning equipment inside a home, garage, vehicle or tent unless it is designed for enclosed spaces. Fire pits are outdoor appliances only, wood or propane. Never move one into a garage, enclosed porch or screened room to escape the wind, and never bring smoldering coals indoors. The CDC lists headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea and confusion as common symptoms of CO poisoning.

Front Range realities: fire bans, wind and HOAs

Colorado counties and fire districts set fire restrictions that change with conditions, sometimes week to week during dry spells. Before every burn, check your county sheriff, your fire district and any HOA covenants; some neighborhoods ban wood-burning pits outright. Propane fire pits and tables are often allowed during wood-burning restrictions because they produce no embers, but not always, and the higher stages of a ban can prohibit open flame of any kind.

Wind is the other Front Range factor. Chinook and downslope winds can come up quickly in fall and winter, carrying embers well beyond 10 feet. A spark screen helps, but on a gusty or red-flag day the right move is to skip the fire. Homes on the foothills edge should also read our guide to defensible space, since a fire pit sits inside the zone that guide asks you to keep clear of fuel.

Cold, dry winters make a fire pit appealing for longer seasons than in many states. They also dry out landscaping, wood mulch and dead grass, so rake the area around the pit clean before you light it.

When a fire pit needs a pro

A portable steel bowl is a DIY purchase. Built-in fire features are not. Gas lines to a permanent fire table, a masonry fire pit near the house or an outdoor fireplace attached to a patio cover typically involve permits, gas fitting and clearance rules that a plumber or contractor handles. Our fire pit guide covers the built-in options.

If you are buying a home with an existing fire pit, outdoor fireplace or gas line to the patio, an inspector can look at clearances, scorch damage on siding and decking, and the condition of gas connections. To book an inspection or ask about a specific setup, contact our team.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best type of fire pit for a backyard?

For most backyards, a mid-size steel wood bowl around 28 to 31 inches with a spark screen covers the basics. Choose a 3-in-1 grill table if you want to cook, a low-smoke stainless pit if smoke bothers neighbors, or a propane fire table if your area often restricts wood burning.

How far should a fire pit be from the house?

The U.S. Fire Administration recommends using fire pits at least 10 feet from your home or anything that can burn. Measure from overhangs, fences, sheds and firewood stacks too, and follow the manual if it requires more space.

Can a fire pit go on a wood deck?

Not a wood-burning pit set directly on the boards. Use one only if the manufacturer allows deck use and you add a listed heat shield or pad made for that pit. A concrete pad or stone patio is the safer base.

Are smokeless fire pits really smokeless?

No. Double-wall designs burn off much of the smoke once the fire is hot, but they still smoke while lighting and when fed damp wood. Dry, seasoned wood below 20 percent moisture makes the biggest difference.

Can a fire pit be used during a Colorado fire ban?

It depends on the stage of the restriction. Wood fires are usually the first thing banned. Propane fire pits are often allowed during lower stages but not always. Check your county, fire district and HOA rules before every burn.
