How to read asbestos test results

What the numbers and fiber types mean

Two pieces of information matter most: the percentage and the fiber type.

Percentage. The figure is the proportion of asbestos in the material. Anything above 1% is regulated as asbestos-containing. The percentage does not directly measure the airborne risk β€” a material can contain asbestos but pose little hazard if it stays intact. The danger comes when fibers become airborne.

Fiber type. Reports name the species: chrysotile (the most common, “white” asbestos), amosite (“brown”), crocidolite (“blue”), and less commonly tremolite, actinolite, or anthophyllite. Negative results: what they do and do not tell you

A positive bulk result tells you a material contains asbestos; it does not measure how many fibers, if any, have been released into the air or breathed by occupants. Intact, undisturbed asbestos-containing material can sit in a home for years releasing essentially nothing, while damaged material can release fibers even at a similar percentage.
