A quick color reference

Before getting into each color, a quick orientation helps. Black or dark green often points to Stachybotrys, Cladosporium, or Aspergillus on chronically wet material, though many harmless molds are dark too. Green mold

Green is probably the most common color homeowners see. Cladosporium, Penicillium, and Aspergillus all frequently appear green, ranging from olive to bright lime to blue-green. You will find green mold on damp walls, in bathrooms, on food, in basements, and around window frames where condensation collects.

Green growth is usually a sign of ongoing dampness rather than a one-time spill. Because these genera include the molds most associated with respiratory allergy symptoms, the presence of widespread green mold is worth taking seriously even though the color itself is unremarkable. Drying the area and improving ventilation typically prevents return once the surface is cleaned.
