If you can already see it, do you even need a test?
Usually not. Both the EPA and the CDC take the same position: when mold is visible, sampling rarely changes what you should do. You clean it and fix the water source regardless of which genus a lab identifies. The EPA’s mold cleanup guidance states plainly that sampling is generally unnecessary because there are no federal standards or thresholds for acceptable mold levels to compare results against. The three ways a lab actually gets your sample
Nearly every invoice reduces to three collection methods, and each answers a different question.

The “free mold inspection” advertised by remediation contractors is the pricey option in disguise. The inspector only makes money if remediation is recommended, so the incentive runs one direction. Credentials worth verifying
Ask for a credential name, an issuing body, and a certificate number — a generic “certified” sticker is a marketing flourish. Reading the report: there is no magic number
A spore-trap report shows raw counts and spores per cubic meter. The logic is comparative, not absolute: if indoor counts of indicator genera — especially Stachybotrys, Chaetomium, and elevated Aspergillus/Penicillium — clearly exceed the outdoor control, a hidden indoor source is likely. If indoor and outdoor look alike in mix and concentration, your indoor air is mostly reflecting the outdoors.
Anyone quoting a hard danger line (“over 1,500 sp/m³ is toxic”) is inventing it.
