The question “can you kill mold” sounds like it should have a simple yes-or-no answer. The honest reply is “yes, technically, but that is the wrong goal.” Disinfectants can denature living fungal cells on a surface, but the spores those cells already produced are still there, the staining is still there, and the substrate the colony grew through is still there. EPA, CDC, and OSHA all frame the cleanup objective as physical removal rather than chemical killing. Can you kill mold with household products?

Bleach, hydrogen peroxide, vinegar, ammonia, borax, and tea tree oil all show some antifungal activity in laboratory conditions. In a real bathroom or basement, the picture is messier. The active ingredient needs sufficient dwell time on a wet enough substrate at the right concentration to reach the living cells. Most homeowner applications fail one of those three conditions. Why bleach is overrated and what works better
