The best air filter for a home furnace or central air system is not simply the highest-rated one. It is the filter that fits the slot snugly, carries a MERV rating the blower can handle and gets changed on schedule. A clogged high-MERV filter can starve a system of air, while a loose low-MERV filter lets dust bypass it entirely. This guide covers HVAC and furnace filters, the flat or deep-pleated media that sit in a return grille or filter rack, not portable air purifiers or their replacement cartridges. Five picks follow, from a basic MERV 5 to a 4-inch MERV 13 media filter, then a buying guide on MERV ratings, sizing, change intervals and wildfire smoke on the Front Range.

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

How we compared: we compared 6 current Amazon listings for HVAC and furnace filters on what each listing states: MERV and other ratings, nominal and actual size, depth, construction, pack size, recommended change interval and certifications. The search also returned 12 portable air purifiers and purifier replacement filters, which we excluded because they are a different product. We did not lab-test or install any of these filters. Prices and availability change, so check the current listing before buying.

The Most Complete Labeling Among the 1-Inch Filters

Five of the 6 HVAC filter listings are 1-inch filters, and all six state a MERV rating. This Filtrete states more than the rest: MERV 11 plus Filtrete’s own MPR scale (1000), the exact actual dimensions, a 90-day change interval and an asthma and allergy friendly certification. Under the EPA’s MERV table, a MERV 11 filter captures at least 20% of particles in the 0.3 to 1.0 micron range, 65% in the 1 to 3 micron range and 85% of larger particles, a meaningful upgrade over the MERV 5 to 8 filters many homes run.

For most forced-air systems with a standard 1-inch return grille, MERV 11 is a sensible default. It catches far more fine dust and pollen than a basic filter, and in a 1-inch format it is less likely to choke airflow than a MERV 13. The same filter is sold in other nominal sizes; a 12x24x1 version also appeared in this search with identical ratings.

What the listing does not state: pleat count, a pressure-drop figure or which body issues the asthma and allergy certification. The 2-pack covers about six months at the stated interval.

Pros

  • MERV 11 plus MPR 1000 stated
  • Exact actual size published
  • App reminders for changes

Cons

  • Only 2 filters per pack
  • No pressure-drop data
  • Certifying body not named

The Only MERV 13 on the Shelf, in the Format That Handles It Best

The EPA advises that homeowners upgrading their filter choose at least MERV 13, or the highest rating their system fan and filter slot can accommodate. Its wildfire guidance repeats the MERV 13 recommendation for smoke. Among these 6 listings, the AprilAire 213 is the only MERV 13 option. Under the EPA’s table, MERV 13 must capture at least 50% of the smallest particles tested (0.3 to 1.0 micron), more than double the MERV 11 minimum.

The 4-inch depth is what makes MERV 13 practical. A deep pleated media filter has far more surface area than a 1-inch filter, so it can filter finely while keeping airflow resistance lower, and AprilAire rates it for up to 12 months instead of 90 days. It is also the only listing here that names the test standard, ASHRAE 52.2, behind its rating.

Fit is the catch. The 213 is built for AprilAire whole-house air purifier cabinets (the Healthy Air System), not a standard 1-inch return grille or a generic 4-inch rack. A home without that cabinet cannot use it without an HVAC contractor adding one. The listing also does not state actual dimensions, and its virus-removal claim refers to a controlled lab test, not real-world performance.

Pros

  • Only MERV 13 on the shelf
  • Up to 12-month life
  • Names ASHRAE 52.2 testing

Cons

  • Fits AprilAire cabinets only
  • Actual size not stated
  • Lab-test claims, not field data

Construction Beverage-board frame with wire mesh support
Change interval Every 60 to 90 days
Pack / model 6 filters; model BP15S.012020-6

Amazon Basics BP15S.012020-6 — 20x20x1, MERV 11, electrostatic, actual 19.75 x 19.75 x 0.75 in, 60–90 days, 6-pack

The Only Listing That Explains Airflow Direction and Nominal Sizing

Two of the most common filter mistakes are buying by the wrong dimensions and installing the filter backward. The Amazon Basics listing addresses both. It explains that the 20x20x1 label is a nominal size, gives the actual 19.75 x 19.75 x 0.75-inch dimensions and says to choose by the old filter’s frame. It is also the only listing that says which way to install it: the airflow arrow points toward the furnace or blower, away from the return grille.

Six filters is the largest pack among the MERV 11 options here, tied with the Filtrete MERV 5 6-pack overall. At the stated 60 to 90-day interval, that is roughly a year of changes, which removes the excuse of not having a spare on hand. Our guide to furnace filter replacement walks through the swap.

The listing’s own claim that the media captures allergens “as small as 3 microns” is modest wording for a MERV 11. The EPA’s MERV 11 minimum covers some capture of particles down to 0.3 microns. It does not state an MPR or FPR equivalent, a pleat count or any certification.

Pros

  • Six filters, about a year’s supply
  • Clear nominal vs actual sizing
  • Airflow-direction instructions

Cons

  • No pleat count or certification
  • Particle claim worded modestly
  • 1-inch depth limits dust capacity

The Only Listing That Translates Between All Three Rating Systems

The EPA notes that filters are rated several ways: MERV, which is based on a national consensus standard, and the proprietary FPR and MPR scales. The Filterbuy is the only listing on the shelf that gives all three, MERV 8, comparable to MPR 700 and FPR 5, which helps a shopper compare it with a store-brand filter labeled in a different system. It is also the only listing that states a pleat density.

MERV 8 is the everyday middle ground. Under the EPA table, it must capture at least 20% of particles in the 1 to 3 micron range and 70% in the 3 to 10 micron range, covering most household dust, lint and pollen, while putting less load on an older blower than MERV 11 or 13. For a house without allergy concerns, or an older furnace whose airflow limits are unknown, it is a reasonable baseline.

Filterbuy’s “captures 90% of dust” and “lasts 3x longer than fiberglass” claims are its own and are not tied to a test method in the listing. MERV 8 captures little in the finest 0.3 to 1.0 micron range, the size of most smoke particles.

Pros

  • MERV, MPR and FPR all stated
  • Pleat density and dual wire backing
  • Made in the USA

Cons

  • MERV 8 does little for smoke
  • Marketing claims lack a test method
  • 4-pack covers about a year at 90 days

The Lowest MERV on the Shelf, for Systems That Need Free Airflow

MERV ratings on the shelf run from 5 to 13, and this Filtrete is the low end. The EPA table sets MERV 5 at capturing at least 20% of 3 to 10 micron particles, which covers lint, coarse dust and some pollen. That is a filter designed to protect the equipment more than to clean the air for occupants.

There are good reasons to choose it. Some older furnaces, systems with undersized return ducts and homes where the filter tends to get forgotten do better with a low-resistance filter than with a MERV 11 that clogs quickly. A cheap MERV 5 changed every 90 days does less harm than a MERV 13 left in for nine months. The 6-pack makes regular changes easy, and the listing states actual dimensions clearly.

For anyone with allergies, asthma or wildfire smoke concerns, MERV 5 is not enough. Step up to MERV 8 or 11 if the system allows, or ask an HVAC technician to confirm what it can handle.

Pros

  • Easy on older blowers
  • Six filters per pack
  • Exact actual size stated

Cons

  • Minimal fine-particle capture
  • Not suited to allergy or smoke concerns
  • 1-inch depth

MERV ratings explained

The EPA describes MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) as a measure of a filter’s ability to capture particles between 0.3 and 10 microns, derived from an ASHRAE test method. Higher numbers trap more of the smaller particles. The EPA’s table breaks it down:

  • MERV 1–4: under 20% of 3–10 micron particles. Typically basic filters that mainly protect equipment.
  • MERV 5–8: 20% to 70% of 3–10 micron particles, with MERV 8 adding some 1–3 micron capture. Dust, lint, most pollen.
  • MERV 9–12: adds meaningful 1–3 micron capture; MERV 11 and 12 begin capturing 0.3–1.0 micron particles (20% and 35%).
  • MERV 13–16: at least 50% (MERV 13) up to 95% (MERV 16) of 0.3–1.0 micron particles, the size range that includes much of the fine particulate in smoke.

Filtrete’s MPR and some retailers’ FPR scales are proprietary, and the EPA notes that for all rating methods, a higher rating means higher removal efficiency for most particle sizes. When comparing across brands, use MERV. Our MERV rating guide goes deeper on the numbers.

MERV 13 and your system’s static pressure

Higher-efficiency media resists airflow more, especially in a thin 1-inch frame. The EPA’s guidance is balanced. It says most furnaces and HVAC systems can accommodate a MERV 13 filter without equipment problems, provided the filter is replaced frequently. It also says systems are rarely labeled with filter recommendations, so a professional HVAC technician should confirm what a specific system can use. A technician can also modify the system, often by adding a deeper filter cabinet, to accept a higher-efficiency filter.

Signs a filter is too restrictive include weaker airflow at the registers, a whistling return grille, a filter that bows or pulls out of its frame, and in cooling season a coil that ices up. A technician can measure total external static pressure and compare it with the blower’s rating. Deep 4-inch or 5-inch media filters like the AprilAire are the usual way to get MERV 13 performance without the airflow penalty of a 1-inch MERV 13.

Sizes: nominal vs actual

Filter sizes are sold by nominal dimensions, rounded to the inch, while the real filter is slightly smaller so it slides into the rack. Five of the 6 listings here state the actual size: a nominal 20x25x1, for instance, measures 19.68 x 24.68 x 0.81 inches. The EPA notes that filters commonly come in thicknesses of 1 to 5 inches and says to make sure the filter fits snugly so air does not leak around it, without bending or crushing it to fit.

To size correctly, read the dimensions printed on the frame of the current filter, or measure the slot. A filter that is a half-inch short in either direction lets unfiltered air bypass it, which defeats a high MERV rating. Our guide to furnace filter sizes lists the common sizes and how to measure.

How often to change an HVAC filter

Stated intervals on this shelf are 60 to 90 days for the 1-inch filters and up to 12 months for the 4-inch AprilAire. The EPA says to follow the manufacturer’s recommendation, notes that manufacturers typically recommend 60 to 90 days, and advises changing more often if filters look heavily soiled at replacement. ENERGY STAR’s maintenance checklist goes further, recommending that homeowners inspect, clean or change air filters in a furnace, central air conditioner or heat pump once a month, and warns that a dirty filter can raise energy costs and damage equipment, leading to early failure.

Practical triggers for an early change include pets, a remodel or sanding project, a dusty spring on the plains, wildfire smoke days, and running the system fan continuously. Writing the install date on the frame is the simplest tracking method; Filtrete’s app reminders are another.

Wildfire smoke season on the Front Range

Smoke from fires in Colorado and across the West can push fine particle levels up along the Front Range for days at a time in summer and fall. The EPA says portable air cleaners and high-efficiency HVAC filters can remove smoke particles from indoor air, that HVAC filtration covers the whole area the system serves while portable cleaners cover one room, and that the two can be used together. It recommends a MERV 13 filter, or as high a rating as the system fan and filter slot can accommodate, fitted snugly without bending.

A few practical points for smoke days. Running the system fan in “on” mode instead of “auto” keeps air moving through the filter; check the fresh-air intake setting if the system has one. Expect to change the filter sooner after a heavy smoke event. A 1-inch MERV 11 is a reasonable step if a MERV 13 is not compatible, and a portable HEPA unit in the main bedroom adds a cleaner room. Our guide to the best air purifier for smoke covers that side, and the best whole-house air purifier guide covers media cabinets like the AprilAire.

What a furnace filter will not do

The EPA is clear that no air cleaner or filter will remove every pollutant in a home, and that most filters are designed for either particles or gases, not both. A pleated HVAC filter does little for odors, VOCs or radon, and it only cleans air while the blower runs. Ductless mini splits and window units are a separate case. The EPA notes they typically have limited filtration intended to keep the equipment clean rather than remove fine particles, so a home heated and cooled by a mini split needs a portable air cleaner for real filtration.

Avoid devices sold as air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone. The EPA says no federal agency has approved ozone generators for use in occupied spaces.

When to call an HVAC technician

Call a technician before moving to MERV 13 on a 1-inch rack if the system is older or the airflow has always seemed weak, if a filter repeatedly bows or collapses, or if the filter rack is damaged and air bypasses it. A technician can measure static pressure, add a deeper filter cabinet, and check the blower and coil while there. Our guide to hiring a heating and cooling contractor covers what to ask.

A home inspection is also a good moment to look at the filter rack, the condition of the filter and signs of neglect such as dusty coils or dirty returns. Buyers and sellers on the Front Range can reach out through our contact page to connect with a vetted local inspector.

Frequently asked questions

What MERV rating should I use for my home?

For most homes, MERV 8 to 11 balances filtration and airflow in a 1-inch slot. The EPA suggests MERV 13, or the highest rating your system fan and filter slot can accommodate, if you are upgrading for fine particles or wildfire smoke. An HVAC technician can confirm what your system can handle.

Will a MERV 13 filter damage my furnace?

The EPA says most furnaces and HVAC systems can accommodate a MERV 13 filter without problems if it is replaced frequently. Because systems are rarely labeled with filter limits, have a technician check static pressure if airflow already seems weak. A deeper 4-inch media filter reduces the airflow penalty.

How often should I change my air filter?

Follow the manufacturer's interval, typically 60 to 90 days for 1-inch filters and up to a year for deep 4-inch media. ENERGY STAR recommends checking the filter monthly, and the EPA advises changing it sooner if it looks heavily soiled, which is common with pets, construction dust or smoke.

What is the difference between nominal and actual filter size?

Nominal size is the rounded label, such as 20x25x1, while the actual filter is slightly smaller, such as 19.68 x 24.68 x 0.81 inches, so it fits the rack. Buy by the size printed on your current filter and make sure the new one fits snugly without gaps or bending.

Do HVAC filters help with wildfire smoke?

Yes, when they are high-efficiency and fit well. The EPA says high-efficiency HVAC filters and portable air cleaners can remove smoke particles indoors and recommends MERV 13 or the highest rating your system allows. Change the filter sooner after heavy smoke events.
