PRO-LAB AS108 Asbestos Kit

PRO-LAB AS108 Asbestos Kit

Asbestos test kits

The PRO-LAB AS108 is a two-sample asbestos sampling kit that comes with a mailer and instructions, but not the laboratory analysis.

The PRO-LAB AS108 is a two-sample asbestos sampling kit that comes with a mailer and instructions, but not the laboratory analysis. To get a result, you pay PRO-LAB’s lab fee for each sample when you send them in; the lab is described as AIHA-accredited, uses polarized light microscopy, and aims to report within about a week. The kit suits a homeowner who wants to collect samples now and decide later how many to submit. What sets it apart is that split: a low entry cost for the kit itself, with the analysis bought separately.

PRO-LAB AS108 — two-sample PLM sampling kit with mailer, AIHA-accredited lab, lab fee paid separately per sample

How It Compares

The Only Kit Here Where Lab Analysis Is Not Included

All nine similar listings are asbestos kits, and every one of them includes laboratory analysis in the purchase: three from SLGi, one from Seeml Labs, three from Asbestos-Sampling.com and two other PRO-LAB kits. The AS108 is the outlier. Its own listing is also inconsistent, calling the per-sample lab fee “optional” in one bullet while the title says it is required. Without the fee there is no result, so treat it as required and budget for two lab charges if you send both samples.

On documentation it holds up reasonably well. It is the only PRO-LAB listing in this comparison that names an accreditation body, joining Seeml and Asbestos-Sampling.com with their NVLAP references, and it adds an expert consultation to explain results, which none of the SLGi listings mention. Its one-week turnaround, however, is slower than SLGi, Seeml and Asbestos-Sampling.com, all of which quote three to five business days or less. The listing’s “air test kit” phrasing is misleading; everything else describes bulk material samples.

The listing does not state whether gloves, a mask or a cutting tool are included.

Who It’s For — and Who Should Skip It

This kit suits a homeowner who wants sampling supplies on hand before a remodel and may only send one sample, or who wants the consultation to talk through what a result means.

Skip it if you want one simple purchase; PRO-LAB’s lab-included two-sample kit or any SLGi kit avoids the second payment. Skip it if results are needed fast, and leave sampling to a licensed inspector when material is damaged, widespread or tied to a home-sale timeline.

Using It at Home

Pre-1980s homes along the Front Range often hide asbestos-era materials in textured ceilings, joint compound, floor tile, mastic and furnace duct tape. Choose the two materials you plan to disturb.

  • Turn off forced-air heating, mist the material, and wear a fitted respirator and disposable gloves.
  • Take a small piece, seal it in the provided bag, and label the room and material.
  • Seal the sampled spot and clean up with a damp towel.
  • Follow the instructions in the kit for paying the lab fee before mailing so the sample is not held.

If a result comes back positive, leave the material in place and plan professional abatement. To schedule a full inspection or get help with sampling, contact us.

Pros

  • Low cost to buy the sampling kit itself
  • Lab described as AIHA-accredited
  • Expert consultation on results
  • Room for two samples

Cons

  • Lab fee is extra for every sample
  • Listing contradicts itself on whether the fee is optional
  • One-week turnaround is slower than most of the shelf
