What’s the difference between mildew and mold?

The short version: mildew is a specific type of mold that grows flat on surfaces, while “mold” is the broader umbrella term for many fungi, including some that penetrate deeper into materials. Mildew typically stays on the surface as a powdery or downy film and is usually white, gray, or yellowish. Other molds are often fuzzy or slimy, come in green, black, blue, or other colors, and can grow into porous materials rather than just sitting on top.

Both are fungi and both need moisture, so the distinction is more about growth pattern and severity than about being completely different organisms. The CDC notes that all molds, mildew included, can cause health effects in sensitive people, so neither should simply be ignored.

The everyday usage is looser than the science. Many people call any flat, light-colored surface growth “mildew” and reserve “mold” for anything dark or fuzzy. Mildew

Mildew looks flat and powdery or fluffy. It is usually white, gray, or pale yellow and may darken to brown or black with age. Mold

Other molds tend to look raised, fuzzy, or slimy. They span many colors and can appear on walls, ceilings, wood, carpet, and inside cabinets. Because they can root into porous materials, they are often harder to remove fully and may leave staining behind even after cleaning.

The smell test

Both produce a musty odor, but it differs in intensity. Mildew has a milder, sometimes faintly damp smell. A stronger, earthy, persistent musty odor often points to a larger or hidden mold problem, possibly inside walls or under flooring. Are mildew and mold equally dangerous?

Deeper molds can cause more damage to building materials and, in some cases, pose greater health risks, particularly for people with allergies, asthma, or weakened immune systems. Where each tends to appear

Mildew shows up where surfaces get repeatedly damp but not soaked: shower walls, tile grout, window sills, fabric stored in humid rooms, and the pages of books in a damp basement. It is a frequent guest in bathrooms because of the daily cycle of steam and drying. Deeper molds tend to appear where water actually accumulates or lingers: around leaks, behind appliances, under flooring, inside wall cavities, and on chronically wet drywall.

Location, then, is a clue to severity. Flat growth on a shower wall is usually manageable mildew. Growth spreading across a ceiling below a bathroom, or around a window that always sweats, may indicate a moisture source feeding something deeper. How to clean mildew

Mildew, because it is surface-level, is usually a manageable DIY job on hard, non-porous surfaces.

  • Ventilate the area and wear gloves and a mask.
  • Scrub with detergent and water, or a commercial mildew cleaner, on tile and grout.
  • Dry the surface completely afterward.
  • Improve ventilation to keep humidity down so it does not return.

For fabrics, laundering with appropriate cleaners often removes mildew, though heavily affected porous items may need to be discarded. Sun and fresh air help, since drying the item thoroughly removes the moisture mildew depends on.

The most important step is not the cleaner you choose but what happens afterward. If the surface stays damp, mildew returns within days. Improving ventilation, running an exhaust fan during and after showers, and wiping surfaces dry break the cycle far more effectively than repeated scrubbing alone.

Preventing both mildew and mold

Because both depend on moisture, a single prevention strategy covers them. The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent, which makes surfaces far less hospitable to either. A hygrometer, an inexpensive humidity gauge, lets you see whether a room sits in the danger zone so you can respond before growth starts.

Bathrooms and kitchens deserve the most attention since they generate the most moisture. Run exhaust fans during and after showers and cooking, fix dripping faucets and running toilets, and wipe down shower walls when you are done. In damp basements and closets, a dehumidifier and better airflow do most of the work. How to clean mold

Porous materials like drywall, carpet, and ceiling tile that are heavily colonized usually need to be removed rather than cleaned, because the mold roots into the material. When to call a professional
