Because they monitor the whole supply, a single device covers leaks anywhere downstream. Most flow monitors include the automatic shutoff valve. The tradeoff is cost and installation; these units typically require a licensed plumber and run several hundred dollars. The biggest weakness of any smart sensor is silent failure: a device that has stopped working but gives no sign until the leak it was supposed to catch goes unreported. Two causes dominate. The second is lost connectivity. A sensor in a basement corner may drift out of Wi-Fi range, and the app may not make that obvious.

Mitigating silent failure takes a little discipline. Pick a system that sends a periodic heartbeat or alerts when a sensor goes offline. Review the app every few months to confirm every sensor still reports. These small habits turn a set-and-forget gadget into genuinely reliable protection.

Internet outages deserve thought too.
