Where the Medical Question Stands

Basements and crawlspaces, because they collect groundwater and condensation and because their materials stay wet longer than upper-floor materials do. Bathrooms, because they generate a lot of vapor and because plumbing penetrations through tile and drywall are common leak paths. Laundry rooms, because supply hoses and drain standpipes fail in ways that are easy to miss. Kitchens, because under-sink leaks and refrigerator water lines fail slowly. What Air Sampling Can and Cannot Show

Air-cassette sampling collects spores from a known volume of air, and a microbiology lab counts and identifies them. A well-collected sample, with the HVAC in its normal state and with windows closed before sampling, produces a comparison between indoor and outdoor spore concentrations and a profile of the genera present. That comparison answers a building question: is the indoor environment elevated relative to outdoors, and which species are responsible? It does not answer a medical question. What to Tell the Physician

The clinical evaluation goes better when the homeowner can describe the building. Containment and Susceptible Occupants

The point is not to validate a pre-formed conclusion but to gather evidence about the building and let the physician integrate it with everything else.

When to Call a Professional
