An upright is still the fastest way to deep-clean wall-to-wall carpet. The motor sits directly over the brush roll, the nozzle is wide, and you push rather than drag. The best upright vacuum for your house, though, depends on more than raw power: whether it keeps fine dust sealed inside, whether the brush height matches your carpet, how heavy it is to carry upstairs, and whether it can switch off the brush for hardwood. This comparison focuses on those points, with an eye on indoor air quality, because an upright that leaks dust from its housing works against the reason you are vacuuming. Seven picks follow, then a buying guide on reading upright vacuum specs.

How we compared: we compared 13 current Amazon listings for corded upright vacuums on what each listing states: HEPA and seal claims, brush-roll features, dust-cup size, weight, cord length, tools and warranty. Two of the listings are color variants of the same Eureka Airspeed, so the shelf covers 12 distinct uprights. We did not lab-test or handle any of these machines. Prices and availability change often, so confirm details on the current listing before buying.

The 7 picks, compared listing by listing

1. Shark Rotator Lift-Away NV501 — Best Overall Sealed-HEPA Upright

Best overallShark Rotator NV501

Bagless Lift-Away upright with a washable HEPA filter, complete-seal claim, LED headlights and a three-tool kit.

  • LED headlights show fine dust on hard floors
  • Dusting brush, wide upholstery and crevice tools
  • Five-year limited warranty
Specification Details

Warranty SharkNinja 5-year limited

Shark NV501 — corded upright, HEPA + complete seal claim, 0.9-qt cup, LED headlights, Lift-Away pod, 15.5 lb, 5-yr warranty

The Only Sealed-HEPA Upright Here That Ships With a Dusting Brush

Three listings on this shelf claim a HEPA filter inside a sealed body, and all three are Shark Lift-Away models: the NV360, the NV352 and this NV501. Of those three, the NV501 is the only one whose included tools list a dusting brush, alongside a wide upholstery tool and crevice tool. That matters more than it sounds. Dust that settles on lampshades, window blinds, bookshelves and baseboards is part of the same dust load you are pulling from the carpet, and a soft brush on a sealed-HEPA hose is one of the cleaner ways to remove it.

It also adds LED headlights, which the NV360 lacks, and the same detachable pod that lets the motor and cup travel up a staircase while the floor nozzle stays at the bottom. No other brand’s upright on this shelf claims a seal around its filter.

The weaknesses are the usual Shark Lift-Away ones. At 15.5 pounds it is near the top of the weight range, the 0.9-quart cup is small for a whole-house upright, and the listing states no suction figure or cord length. The HEPA filter is washable but needs 24 hours to air-dry before going back in, so a spare filter is handy.

Pros

  • Sealed HEPA claim
  • Most complete above-floor tool kit of the sealed trio
  • LED headlights and Lift-Away pod
  • Five-year warranty

Cons

  • 15.5 lb to carry between floors
  • Small 0.9-quart cup
  • No brushroll shutoff mentioned in this listing

2. Eureka PowerSpeed NEU280 — Best Value for Carpet

Best value for carpetEureka PowerSpeed NEU280

Bagless upright with an upgraded cyclone system, five brush-roll heights, onboard tools and a 2-year warranty.

Why we like it

  • Five height settings from shag to bare floor
  • Claims 99.9% capture of dust and dander
  • Stretch hose with 7-inch crevice tool
  • Listing spells out brush-roll care
Specification Details

Filtration claim Traps 99.9% of dust, dander and allergens; HEPA not named
Weight 11.5 lb
Tools Crevice tool, dusting brush, upholstery tool on board
Warranty 2-year limited

Eureka NEU280 — corded cyclonic upright, 5 heights, 99.9% capture claim (no HEPA named), 11.5 lb, 2-yr warranty

The Only Listing That Warns You to Clean the Brush Roll and Belt

Every upright on this shelf has a spinning brush roll, and every one of them will eventually wrap with hair and string. The NEU280 is the only listing of the 13 that says so plainly, recommending cleaning the roller and belt every two weeks and warning that neglect can lead to malfunction, a broken belt, or in serious cases smoke. That candor is useful. A belt-driven upright that is maintained on schedule keeps its agitation; one that is ignored loses it and can overheat.

Beyond that, it is a capable mid-weight carpet machine: five brush heights, a cyclone separator Eureka describes as handling both large debris and fine dust, and three onboard tools on a stretch hose. At 11.5 pounds it is about 4 pounds lighter than the Shark NV501.

The filtration wording needs a careful read. “Traps 99.9% of dust, dander and allergens” is a capture claim with no particle size and no mention of HEPA or a sealed body, so it is not equivalent to the Shark claims above. The listing also gives no bin size.

Pros

  • Five brush heights
  • Honest maintenance guidance
  • Mid-range weight
  • Two-year warranty

Cons

  • No HEPA or seal claim
  • No dust-cup size stated
  • Belt-driven brush needs regular cleaning

3. Shark Navigator Lift-Away NV352 — Best for Long Hair and Pets

Best for long hair and petsShark NV352 Lift-Away

  • Only upright here claiming a self-cleaning brushroll
  • HEPA filter with complete-seal claim
  • Pet Power Brush for stairs and upholstery
  • Lightest of the three sealed Sharks
Specification Details
Type Corded bagless upright with Lift-Away pod

Weight 12.5 lb
Tools Crevice tool, upholstery tool, Pet Power Brush
Warranty SharkNinja 5-year limited

Shark NV352 listing — Lift-Away upright, self-cleaning brushroll claim, HEPA + seal, LED headlights, 12.5 lb, 5-yr warranty

The Only Upright Listing Here That Claims No Hair Wrap

None of the other 12 uprights on this shelf claims a self-cleaning or anti-wrap brush roll. For households with long-haired people, a shedding dog or a cat that sheds in clumps, that is the feature that saves the most time: no stopping to cut hair off the bristles with scissors. Add the HEPA-plus-seal claim and a motorized Pet Power Brush for stair treads and couches, and this is the pet-household pick of the group. It is also 3 pounds lighter than the NV501.

There is a real caveat. The title calls this the Navigator NV352, but the bullets describe DuoClean PowerFins brushrolls, a self-cleaning brushroll and a “Rotator Lift-Away” in the box, features associated with different Shark models. The listing appears to mix descriptions. Before buying, confirm on the product page or packaging that the unit you are getting has the self-cleaning brushroll you are paying for.

Pros

  • Self-cleaning brushroll claim
  • Sealed HEPA claim
  • Pet Power Brush included
  • 12.5 lb, lighter than other sealed Sharks

Cons

  • Listing text mixes model descriptions
  • No dust-cup size in this listing
  • No suction or cord figures

Why we like it

  • 7.7 lb, easy to carry between floors
  • Quick-release handle doubles as a wand
  • Tools snap onto the body
  • Washable filter, no recurring cost
Specification Details
Type Corded bagless upright, compact
Weight 7.7 lb
Cleaning path 10.5 inches
Filtration One washable filter; HEPA not claimed
Tools Crevice tool, dusting brush
Warranty Not stated in listing

Eureka NEU10AE5 — corded compact upright, 7.7 lb, 10.5-in path, washable filter, crevice + dusting brush

The Lightest Upright on the Shelf With a Believable Weight

The Airspeed, sold in blue as the NEU10AE5 and in green as the NEU10AE4, lists 7.7 pounds. That is the lightest weight on this shelf that fits a full upright. (A Bissell CleanView Swivel listing claims 3.31 pounds, which looks like a data error.) For older homeowners, split-level houses or anyone who carries the vacuum up and down stairs every week, shaving 5 to 8 pounds off the Shark weights is the main reason to pick it.

The trade-off is a narrower 10.5-inch path and a simpler machine. There is no brush-height adjustment, no HEPA claim, no headlights and no stated bin size or warranty. It suits smaller homes, rentals and secondary floors more than a large, carpeted main level.

Pros

  • Lightest believable upright weight here
  • Handle converts for above-floor cleaning
  • Washable filter

Cons

  • Narrow 10.5-inch path
  • No height adjustment or HEPA claim
  • No warranty or bin size stated

5. Eureka PowerSpeed NEU182B — Best Wide Path for Big Rooms

Best wide pathEureka PowerSpeed NEU182B

Bagless upright with a 12.6-inch nozzle, five height settings, a stretch hose and three onboard tools.

Check price on Amazon$69.99 as of Oct 20, 2026 5:40 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price.

Why we like it

  • Widest stated nozzle on the shelf
  • Five height settings
  • Three tools stored on board
  • About 10 lb
Specification Details
Type Corded bagless upright
Cleaning path 12.6 inches
Dust cup Title says 2.6 L; bullets say 4.1 L
Weight 10 lb
Filtration Washable filter; HEPA not claimed
Warranty 1-year limited

Eureka NEU182B — corded upright, 12.6-in nozzle, 5 heights, washable filter, 10 lb, 1-yr warranty

The Widest Cleaning Path Stated on the Shelf

Only three listings among the 13 give a nozzle width at all: the two color versions of the Airspeed at 10.5 inches and this PowerSpeed at 12.6 inches. A wider path means fewer passes in a large family room or basement rec room, and the five height settings let the same machine move from shag to bare floor. The listing also says its wheels are designed not to scratch or gouge hardwood, a claim worth weighing if most of your floors are wood.

The dust-cup figure is a problem. The title says 2.6 liters and the bullets say 4.1 liters; plan on the smaller number. There is no HEPA claim, and the warranty is one year, half of what Eureka states on the NEU280.

Pros

  • 12.6-inch path covers rooms faster
  • Five height settings
  • Onboard tools on a stretch hose

Cons

  • Contradictory dust-cup capacity
  • No HEPA or seal claim
  • Only 1-year warranty

6. Amazon Basics Upright Bagless — Best Basic Upright With the Longest Cord

Best basic, longest cordAmazon Basics Upright

Why we like it

  • 25 ft cord, the only cord length stated
  • 1.7-liter dust cup with quick release
  • 8.4 lb and simple to use
  • Detachable handle for tools
Specification Details
Type Corded bagless upright
Cord 25 ft
Dust cup 1.7 liters
Weight 8.4 lb
Filtration Washable filter; HEPA not claimed
Warranty Not stated in listing

Amazon Basics upright — corded, 25 ft cord, 1.7 L cup, washable filter, 8.4 lb, upholstery + crevice tools

The Only Upright Listing Here That States Its Cord Length

Cord length is one of the most practical specs on a corded upright, and 12 of the 13 listings on this shelf leave it out. The Amazon Basics states 25 feet, enough to cover most rooms and a hallway from a single outlet. Pair that with a 1.7-liter cup and an 8.4-pound body and you get a no-frills machine for rentals, basements and garages.

It is basic in every other way: a washable filter with no HEPA claim, two tools, no brush-height adjustment, no brushroll shutoff and no stated warranty.

Pros

  • Stated 25 ft cord
  • Mid-size 1.7-liter cup
  • Light at 8.4 lb

Cons

  • No HEPA or seal claim
  • No height adjustment
  • No warranty stated

  • Quick-release wand for curtains and corners
  • Scatter-free design for hard floors
  • Push-button dirt tank release

Type Compact corded bagless upright
Weight Bullets say under 10 lb; spec field lists 10.9 lb
Dust capacity Not stated in listing
Filtration Not stated in listing
Tools Integrated quick-release extension wand
Warranty Not stated in listing

Bissell 3437F — compact corded upright, turbo suction claim, scatter-free hard-floor design, quick-release wand, ~10–11 lb

A Compact Upright Built for Small Spaces, With Few Specs Stated

Bissell positions the 3437F as full-size suction in a compact frame for apartments and dorms. The quick-release wand and scatter-free hard-floor design make it a reasonable fit for a condo with mixed flooring, and its shorter body stores more easily than a Lift-Away Shark.

The listing is short on hard numbers. It states no bin size, filter type, cord length or warranty, and its own weight claims disagree. Consider it a convenience pick for small homes, not an allergy machine.

Pros

  • Compact storage
  • Quick-release wand
  • Scatter-free hard-floor design

Cons

  • No filter type or HEPA claim
  • No bin, cord or warranty details
  • Weight stated inconsistently

How to read upright vacuum specs

Upright listings are long on adjectives and short on comparable numbers. These are the specs that hold up.

Filtration and seal claims

The EPA defines HEPA as a pleated mechanical filter that can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles such as dust, pollen and mold at 0.3 microns, the hardest size to capture. In a vacuum, a HEPA filter only helps if the exhaust air cannot bypass it through gaps in the body, which is what “sealed system” or “complete seal” language is meant to address. On this shelf, 3 of 13 listings claim HEPA plus a seal, all Shark Lift-Away models. Eureka’s NEU280 claims 99.9% capture of dust and dander without naming HEPA, and the rest make no filtration claim at all beyond “washable.” Our explainer on HEPA filters covers the standard in more depth, and the best HEPA vacuums roundup goes beyond uprights.

Suction and motor numbers

Two listings here give a motor wattage (700 W for the Airspeed, 960 W for the NEU181A); none gives air watts or any measured suction. Motor watts describe electrical draw, not cleaning performance. In practice, an upright’s carpet cleaning depends heavily on brush-roll agitation and height, which is why the height setting deserves more attention than the wattage.

Brush-roll height and shutoff

A brush roll set too low on plush carpet bogs down; set too high, it skims. Only the Eureka PowerSpeed listings on this shelf mention a height adjustment (five settings each). On hard floors, a spinning brush can scatter grit and, on soft finishes, scuff them. Brushroll shutoff is the fix, and among these 13 listings it appears only on the Shark NV360. If you have hardwood, LVP or tile on the main level, prioritize shutoff or a hard-floor mode, or keep a separate stick vacuum for bare floors.

Weight, cup size and cord

  • Weight: believable figures run from 7.7 pounds (Eureka Airspeed) to about 16 (Shark NV360). Every upright has to be carried up stairs, so weigh this against how many floors you clean.
  • Dust cup: Shark’s Lift-Away models list 0.9 quart; the Eureka NEU181A lists 2.6 liters. Bigger cups mean fewer dusty emptying trips.
  • Cord: only one listing (Amazon Basics, 25 feet) states its cord length. Check the manual or product page before buying if your outlets are far apart.

Uprights and indoor air quality

Uprights move a lot of air, which cuts both ways. A sealed machine with a good filter pulls fine dust out of carpet and keeps it. A leaky one can blow it back into the breathing zone. The EPA’s asthma-trigger guidance recommends vacuuming carpets and upholstered furniture weekly with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter, and suggests that people with asthma or allergies leave the room while vacuuming. Its biological-contaminants page notes that household dust can carry dust mites, pollen, pet allergens and mold, and that allergy households may need to clean more often.

Simple habits help any upright: empty the cup outdoors or into a bag held tight against it, wash filters on schedule and let them dry completely, and slow down on carpet so the brush has time to lift embedded grit. If the house is dusty again a day after cleaning, the problem may be air leaks or duct issues rather than the vacuum; our guide to why a house gets so dusty covers the usual culprits. Homes with a built-in system can compare the trade-offs in our central vacuum guide, since central systems exhaust outside the living space.

Front Range carpet, grit and wildfire dust

Many Front Range houses built from the 1970s through the 2000s still have wall-to-wall carpet on upper floors and in basements, which is upright territory. Dry winter air keeps fine dust suspended longer, and wind-blown soil and decomposed-granite landscaping track abrasive grit that wears carpet fibers if it is not lifted out regularly. A brush-height setting matched to your carpet and a regular weekly pass do more for carpet life than any single feature.

Wildfire smoke events add fine particles that settle on floors and furniture. The EPA’s wildfire indoor-air page lists vacuuming among activities that increase indoor fine particles during smoke events unless the vacuum has a HEPA filter, and for post-smoke cleanup it recommends misting surfaces and wet-mopping, using a HEPA-type vacuum if you vacuum dusty surfaces. It also says children, older adults and people with heart or lung disease should stay out of ash cleanup. A portable HEPA air purifier handles what the vacuum cannot reach.

What an upright should not vacuum

  • Possible asbestos debris. The EPA tells homeowners not to dust, sweep or vacuum debris that may contain asbestos. Older textured ceilings, pipe wrap and sheet flooring are common sources in older homes; see our asbestos cleanup guide.
  • Lead paint chips and dust. In pre-1978 homes, the EPA says settled lead dust can re-enter the air when a home is vacuumed or swept, recommends HEPA vacuums only where paint chips or dust are visible, and cautions against vacuums with beater bars on surfaces they can wear down. Our lead paint dust guide explains testing first.
  • Water, wet stains and construction dust. None of these uprights is wet-rated, and drywall dust can choke filters quickly. Use a shop vacuum for construction dust and a carpet cleaner for stains; our carpet cleaner picks compare deep cleaners and spot cleaners.

When the problem is the house, not the vacuum

If carpet smells musty after vacuuming, if dark lines appear along carpet edges at baseboards, or if allergy symptoms flare indoors no matter how often you clean, there may be moisture, mold or air-leak issues worth investigating. A home inspection or air and mold testing can pinpoint what a vacuum cannot fix. Front Range homeowners and buyers can get in touch through our contact page to connect with a vetted local inspector.

Frequently asked questions

Are upright vacuums better than stick vacuums?

For wall-to-wall carpet, uprights generally clean faster thanks to wider nozzles, corded power and brush-roll height settings. Stick vacuums are lighter and handier for hard floors and quick pickups. Many homes use an upright for weekly carpet cleaning and a stick for daily touch-ups.

What does sealed HEPA mean on an upright vacuum?

It means the listing claims both a HEPA filter and a body sealed so that exhaust air passes through the filter instead of leaking around it. The EPA describes HEPA filters as able to capture at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns. On this shelf only three Shark Lift-Away listings make both claims.

How heavy is a typical upright vacuum?

The listings compared here range from about 7.7 pounds for a compact Eureka to about 16 pounds for a Shark Lift-Away. Lift-Away designs offset weight on stairs because the pod detaches. If you carry the vacuum between floors weekly, a lighter model may get used more.

How often should I clean an upright vacuum's brush roll?

Follow the manual, but hair and string build up quickly in pet homes. One Eureka listing recommends cleaning the roller and belt every two weeks and warns that neglect can cause belt failure or smoke. Self-cleaning brushrolls reduce wrap but still need occasional checks.

Can an upright vacuum scratch hardwood floors?

A spinning brush roll can scatter grit and scuff soft finishes, so use brushroll shutoff or a hard-floor setting where available. Check the wheels for trapped debris, and consider a stick vacuum or dust mop for large hardwood areas.
