The best handheld vacuum is the one that is charged, within reach and able to hold onto what it picks up. A hand vac will not replace a full-size machine, but it handles the daily messes that make a house feel dusty: kitchen crumbs, pet hair on the couch, grit on stair treads, cobwebs on window sills and the fine dust that settles on Front Range homes every dry, windy week. The catch is that handheld listings make some of the loosest claims in home care, from suction numbers in mismatched units to “HEPA” filters that are rinsed under a tap. Below are seven picks, each matched to a specific job, followed by a buying guide that explains which specs actually tell you something.

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

How we compared: we compared 15 current Amazon handheld vacuum listings on what each listing states: suction claims, stated runtime, battery and charging, dust-cup size, filter type, tools and weight. We did not lab-test any of these units or use them hands-on. Seven of the 15 listings come from three name brands (Shark, BLACK+DECKER and Bissell); the other eight come from smaller sellers. Prices and availability change often, so check the current listing before buying.

The 7 picks, compared listing by listing

1. Shark WANDVAC WV201 — Best Lightweight Everyday Hand Vac

Best overallShark WANDVAC WV201

1.4 lb hand vac with a brushless motor, charging dock, one-touch empty and pet and duster crevice tools.

Why we like it

  • Listed at 1.4 lb, among the lightest here
  • Brushless motor named in the listing
  • Dock keeps it charged and within reach
  • One-touch button empties the cup
  • Pet tool and duster crevice tool included
Specification Details
Weight 1.4 lb as stated in the listing

Runtime / suction figure Not stated in listing
Tools Multi-surface pet tool, duster crevice tool

Shark WV201RGBRN — 1.4 lb, brushless motor, charging dock, one-touch empty, pet + duster crevice tools

The Only Name-Brand Hand Vac Here That Names a Brushless Motor

Three of the 15 listings mention a brushless motor: this WANDVAC and two smaller-seller units (the dormzie in pick 6 and the FAOGO in pick 7). Among the seven name-brand listings, the WANDVAC is the only one that says it. A brushless motor does not guarantee more suction, but it is the motor type that lets a 1.4 lb tool run without the bulk of older brushed designs.

That 1.4 lb figure ties it with the basic BLACK+DECKER HNVC215B10 as the lightest name-brand listing on the shelf. The difference is the dock. Five listings mention a wall mount or a charging dock, base or station, and the WANDVAC pairs its dock with an LED panel that shows remaining battery, which matters for a tool you grab without thinking.

What the listing leaves out is just as relevant. It gives no runtime, no suction number in Pa or air watts, and no dust-cup volume, and it describes the filter only as capturing “dust and large debris.” It is a quick-pickup tool for crumbs, pet hair and entry-mat grit, not a filtration claim. Allergy households should read the filtration section of the buying guide before relying on any hand vac for fine dust.

Pros

  • Very light for one-handed use and high shelves
  • Dock with battery-level display
  • Hands-off emptying
  • Brushless motor named

Cons

  • No stated runtime
  • No suction figure or cup volume
  • No HEPA claim; filter described loosely

2. Shark UltraCyclone Pet Pro Plus CH951 — Best for Pet Hair on Furniture

Best for pet hairShark UltraCyclone Pet Pro Plus

Why we like it

  • Self-cleaning pet power brush included
  • Three tools plus bare-nozzle use
  • Two cyclonic air streams protect the filter
  • CleanTouch ejector for hands-free emptying
Specification Details
Weight Listing copy says 2.8 lb; item data lists about 3.1 lb
Airflow design Two cyclonic air streams, described as extending filter and motor life
Tools Crevice tool, scrubbing brush, self-cleaning pet power brush
Emptying CleanTouch dirt ejector; XL dust cup (volume not stated)
Runtime / filter type Not stated in listing

Shark CH951BR1 — about 2.8 to 3.1 lb, dual cyclonic streams, self-cleaning pet power brush, crevice tool, scrubbing brush

The Only Listing With a Self-Cleaning Pet Brush

Pet hair wraps around brush rolls, and a wrapped roll stops agitating fabric. Of the 15 listings, this is the only one that describes its powered pet brush as self-cleaning. The Bissell in pick 3 also has a motorized brush, but its listing makes no self-cleaning claim, and the other hand vacs rely on passive bristle heads.

The CH951 is a 2026 release that builds on Shark’s older CH901 UltraCyclone Pro, which is also on the shelf. Both use the same dual-cyclone design and CleanTouch ejector, but the CH901 ships with only a crevice tool and scrubbing brush. If pets sleep on the sofa, the powered brush is the reason to choose the newer model.

Pet dander is a recognized indoor allergen; the EPA’s asthma-trigger guidance notes that proteins in pet skin flakes, saliva and hair can trigger asthma and recommends thorough cleaning of carpets and upholstered furniture. A hand vac with a powered brush gets more of that hair off fabric, but the listing does not claim HEPA filtration, so it addresses the visible hair rather than fine airborne dander.

Pros

  • Only self-cleaning pet brush on the shelf
  • Three tools for fabric, crevices and stuck-on dirt
  • Hands-free emptying

Cons

  • Heaviest Shark here at roughly 3 lb
  • Weight figures disagree within the listing
  • No runtime, cup volume or filter rating stated

3. Bissell Pet Hair Eraser 2390A — Best for Upholstery and Carpeted Stairs

Best for upholstery and stairsBissell Pet Hair Eraser 2390A

14V lithium-ion hand vac with a motorized brush, upholstery tool, crevice tool and triple-level filtration.

Check price on Amazon$89.97 as of Oct 19, 2026 8:18 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price.

Why we like it

  • Motorized brush tool for embedded hair
  • Only listing with a dedicated upholstery tool
  • Mentions stairs and auto interiors directly
  • Triple-level filtration described
Specification Details
Battery 14V lithium-ion
Tools Motorized brush tool, upholstery tool, crevice tool
Capacity Item data lists 0.7 litres
Filtration Triple-level filtration; HEPA not claimed
Weight / warranty About 3 lb; 1-year limited warranty

Bissell 2390A — 14V Li-ion, motorized brush + upholstery + crevice tools, 0.7 L, triple-level filtration, 1-yr warranty

The Only Hand Vac Here With a Dedicated Upholstery Tool

Several listings say their brush works on sofas, but the 2390A is the only one of the 15 that ships a tool named for upholstery, alongside a motorized brush and crevice tool. That combination fits carpeted stair treads, where a wide, flat head covers the tread and the crevice tool reaches the riser seam where hair and grit collect.

At about 3 lb it is one of the heavier units here, and the 14V battery spec is not a runtime. The listing does not say how long a charge lasts. Its “triple-level filtration” describes stages, not a HEPA rating.

The 0.7 litre figure appears in the item data rather than the feature list, so treat it as an approximate container size. Even so, it is the largest capacity figure given by any name-brand listing on the shelf, which helps when a shedding dog fills a small cup halfway down the stairs.

Pros

  • Motorized brush plus upholstery tool
  • Large stated capacity for a name brand
  • Explicitly aimed at stairs, furniture and cars

Cons

  • Around 3 lb
  • No stated runtime
  • Shorter 1-year warranty than BLACK+DECKER’s 2 years
  • Older 2018 design

Why we like it

  • Only rotating nozzle on the shelf
  • Pull-out crevice tool and flip-up brush built in
  • Cyclonic action keeps debris off the filter
  • 2-year limited warranty
Specification Details
Battery 16V MAX lithium-ion
Nozzle and tools Rotating slim nozzle; pull-out crevice tool; flip-up dusting brush
Bowl Translucent, bagless, washable; item data lists 21 oz
Charging Charging station
Weight / warranty About 2.6 lb; 2-year limited warranty
Runtime / filter rating Not stated in listing

BLACK+DECKER CHV1410L — 16V MAX, rotating nozzle, onboard crevice + brush, 21 oz bowl, 2.6 lb, 2-yr warranty

The Only Listing With a Rotating Nozzle

The CHV1410L’s slim nozzle rotates, which is the only such design among the 15 listings. A nozzle that turns lets you reach the back of a toe kick, the track of a sliding door or the gap beside a refrigerator without twisting your wrist. The crevice tool and brush live on the body, so there is nothing loose to lose in a drawer.

Four listings describe cyclonic separation, and this is one of them. Spinning debris away from the filter is what keeps suction from falling off as the bowl fills, and the listing’s own maintenance tip, empty after every use and clean the filter regularly, is good advice for any unit here.

BLACK+DECKER is the only brand here that states a 2-year limited warranty, and all three of its listings carry it. The listing does not give a runtime or suction figure, and it does not claim HEPA filtration.

Pros

  • Rotating nozzle for awkward angles
  • Tools stored onboard
  • Cyclonic design and washable bowl
  • 2-year warranty

Cons

  • Long-running older model
  • No runtime or suction figure
  • No HEPA claim

5. BLACK+DECKER Dustbuster Reveal HLVD320B42 — Best for Spotting Fine Dust

Best for spotting fine dustBLACK+DECKER Dustbuster Reveal

Dustbuster with an onboard LED, up to 16.5 minutes of stated runtime, charging base and washable bowl and filter.

Check price on Amazon$59.99 as of Oct 19, 2026 8:55 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price.

Why we like it

  • Onboard LED lights up fine debris
  • Only name brand stating a runtime
  • Charging base with completion light
  • Washable bowl and filter; 2-year warranty
Specification Details
Runtime Up to 16.5 minutes as stated
Lighting Onboard LED in the cleaning path
Tools Crevice tool; built-in flip-up brush
Charging Charging base with indicator light
Weight / warranty Item data lists about 3.7 lb (may include base); 2-year limited warranty

BLACK+DECKER HLVD320B42 — LED, up to 16.5 min, charging base, flip-up brush + crevice tool, 2-yr warranty

The Only Name-Brand Listing That States a Runtime

Seven of the 15 listings give a runtime number. Six are smaller-seller units claiming 20 to 30-plus minutes, and the seventh is this Reveal at up to 16.5 minutes. None of the Shark or Bissell listings, and neither of the other two BLACK+DECKER models, gives a figure. A modest number that a major brand puts in writing is often more useful than a large one with no test conditions attached.

The LED is the practical draw. Four listings mention an LED light for cleaning, and fine dust is much easier to see when light rakes across a floor at a low angle. That matters on dark hardwood, stair nosings and window sills, where the gray film from dry, windy days is hard to spot under overhead lights.

The weight in the item data, about 3.7 lb, may include the charging base, since the feature list calls the vacuum lightweight. Check the box dimensions if hand fatigue is a concern. The listing does not claim HEPA filtration.

Pros

  • LED makes fine dust visible
  • Stated runtime from a major brand
  • Charging base and indicator
  • 2-year warranty

Cons

  • 16.5 minutes is the shortest stated runtime here
  • Unclear weight figure
  • No filtration rating

6. dormzie VC029 — Best for Long Runtime and a Spare Filter

Best long runtimedormzie VC029

Brushless hand vac claiming 19,000 Pa, 25 to 30 minutes on a 6,000 mAh battery, USB-C charging and a spare filter.

Check price on Amazon$35.99 as of Oct 19, 2026 8:55 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price.

Why we like it

  • Only listing that includes a spare filter
  • States 25 to 30 minutes of runtime
  • USB-C charging works in the car
  • Flexible hose and long crevice nozzle
Specification Details
Suction claim Up to 19,000 Pa, two suction modes
Battery / runtime 6,000 mAh; 25 to 30 minutes stated; about 3.5 hours to recharge
Charging USB-C port
Filtration Washable, reusable filter described as HEPA; one replacement included
Tools / weight Brush, long crevice nozzle, flexible hose; 1.3 lb in copy, 2 lb in item data

dormzie VC029 — 19,000 Pa claim, 6,000 mAh, 25–30 min, USB-C, washable HEPA-labeled filter + spare, hose

The Only Listing That Ships a Spare Filter

Washable filters need to dry completely before they go back in, and the dormzie listing is the only one of the 15 that includes a second filter. That solves a real problem: you can rinse one and keep cleaning with the other, rather than running the vacuum with a damp filter or leaving it idle for a day.

Seven listings quote suction in pascals, ranging from 8,000 to 36,000 Pa, and this one claims 19,000 Pa. None of the name-brand listings give a Pa or air-watt figure, so these numbers cannot be compared against Shark or BLACK+DECKER. They also come without test conditions, so treat them as relative claims within one seller’s lineup.

Seven listings also call their filter HEPA, and all seven are from smaller sellers. A washable filter labeled HEPA is not the same as a sealed system tested to the HEPA standard; the buying guide below explains why. The listing’s weight figures disagree, 1.3 lb in the feature copy and 2 lb in the item data.

Pros

  • Spare filter for rinse-and-swap use
  • Stated runtime of 25 to 30 minutes
  • USB-C charging
  • Hose for vents and car seat gaps

Cons

  • Pa figure has no test conditions
  • HEPA label without a sealed-system claim
  • No warranty stated
  • Conflicting weight figures

7. FAOGO WX22-Ultra — Best Vacuum-and-Blower Combo

Best vacuum plus blowerFAOGO WX22-Ultra

Brushless 2-in-1 vacuum and blower claiming 36,000 Pa max, 30-plus minutes, an LED and a mesh-guarded washable filter.

Check price on Amazon$39.99 as of Oct 19, 2026 8:55 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price.

Why we like it

  • Switches between suction and blowing
  • Metal mesh guards the washable filter
  • LED for under seats and furniture
  • Candid that it is for spot cleaning only
Specification Details
Suction claim Up to 36,000 Pa Max mode; 18,000 Pa Eco mode
Modes Vacuum and blower
Runtime Up to 30-plus minutes stated
Filtration Washable filter described as HEPA, behind a metal mesh guard
Weight / warranty Not stated in listing

FAOGO WX22-Ultra — 36,000/18,000 Pa claims, vacuum + blower, brushless, 30+ min, LED, mesh-guarded washable filter

The Highest Suction Claim Here, and the Most Honest Disclaimer

At 36,000 Pa, the FAOGO’s Max-mode claim is the highest on the shelf, more than double most of the other Pa figures. It is also the only listing that says plainly that the unit is designed for spot cleaning and small areas and is not a substitute for a full-size vacuum. That candor is worth more than the headline number.

Two listings offer a blowing mode: this one and the much smaller KMM air duster. Blowing is handy for keyboard crumbs and car vents, but think before using it indoors. It moves dust from one surface into the air, which is the opposite of what an allergy household wants. Use it outdoors or in the garage.

The listing gives no weight and no warranty, and its product dimensions are clearly placeholders. Buy it as a garage-and-car tool with house duty on the side.

Pros

  • Suction and blower in one tool
  • Mesh-protected filter
  • LED light and brushless motor

Cons

  • Blowing mode stirs dust indoors
  • No weight, warranty or real dimensions
  • Pa figures have no test conditions

How to read handheld vacuum specs

Handheld listings are short on standardized numbers, so the useful skill is knowing which claims carry information and which do not.

Suction: pascals, air watts and silence

Seven listings on this shelf quote suction in pascals (Pa), from 8,000 to 36,000 Pa. Pa measures sealed suction, the pressure difference the motor can pull with the inlet blocked. It says nothing about airflow, which is what actually carries debris into the cup. Air watts combine both, but no listing here uses them, and none of the seven name-brand listings gives any suction figure at all. A Pa figure from one seller and a silent Shark listing cannot be compared on paper. Use Pa only to compare models within one seller’s own lineup.

Runtime: always read the mode

Runtime claims usually describe the lowest power setting. The Evekas listing is the honest example on this shelf: 30 minutes in Eco mode, 20 minutes in Max. Expect any “30-plus minutes” claim to shrink by a third or more on the high setting. For a hand vac, 10 to 15 minutes of strong suction is plenty; the real issue is whether the battery holds a charge between uses, which a dock or wall mount solves.

Bin size and emptying

Dust-cup size is stated inconsistently, in milliliters, ounces or simply “XL.” The largest figures here come from smaller sellers (670 ml and 520 ml), while the name brands focus on how the cup empties. Hands-free ejectors such as Shark’s CleanTouch and the WANDVAC’s one-touch button matter more for dust than raw volume, because tapping a clogged filter over the trash puts the finest particles straight back into the air.

Weight and balance

Stated weights run from under a pound for the smallest air-duster units to about 3.7 lb. Listings also contradict themselves, with feature copy and item data disagreeing on several units. For overhead dusting and stairs, under 2 lb is noticeably easier; for upholstery, a heavier unit with a powered brush does more work per pass.

If most of your cleaning is whole floors rather than spot jobs, a stick or cordless vacuum is the better tool. Our cordless vacuum comparison covers full-length models, several of which convert into a handheld.

HEPA, “HEPA-type” and what a hand vac can really filter

The EPA describes a HEPA filter as a pleated mechanical filter that can theoretically remove at least 99.97% of airborne particles at 0.3 microns, the hardest size to catch, with larger and smaller particles trapped even more efficiently. That standard describes the filter media. A vacuum only delivers HEPA-level results if the whole air path is sealed, so dusty air cannot bypass the filter through gaps in the housing.

On this shelf, seven listings use the word HEPA, and every one is a smaller-seller unit with a washable filter. None claims a sealed system or cites a test standard. Rinsing a filter under a tap can disturb the media, and a “HEPA” filter around a loose-fitting cup leaks around its edges. The name-brand listings avoid the term and describe filtration in general language. That is less impressive on paper but not necessarily worse in practice. Our explainer on how HEPA filters work covers the difference between filter media and system sealing.

The practical takeaway: a handheld is a debris tool. For dust-mite and pet allergen control on carpets and upholstered furniture, the EPA’s asthma-trigger guidance recommends weekly vacuuming with a vacuum that has a HEPA filter, and suggests people with asthma or allergies leave the room while it runs. That points to a full-size machine with sealed filtration; our HEPA vacuum roundup compares those. A hand vac then handles the in-between messes without becoming your allergen strategy.

Front Range dust, wildfire smoke and pets

Dry air and wind make dust a daily fact in Colorado homes. Fine grit blows in through door gaps and settles on sills, stair nosings and electronics within days of cleaning. A charged hand vac by the back door or on the stair landing handles that steady drift better than hauling out a full-size machine twice a week. If dust returns faster than seems normal, the cause is often air leakage, duct issues or filtration rather than housekeeping; our guide to why a house gets so dusty walks through the usual sources.

Wildfire smoke changes the rules. During a smoke event, the EPA lists vacuuming among the activities that add fine particles to indoor air unless the vacuum has a HEPA filter. After smoke passes, it advises against dry sweeping fallen ash, recommends misting hard surfaces and wet-mopping, and says to use a HEPA-filtered vacuum if you vacuum dusty surfaces. Most hand vacs on this shelf do not meet that bar. Wipe sills and ledges with a damp cloth first, and keep the blower modes in the garage.

Pet households benefit most from a powered brush, which is why picks 2 and 3 are here. Hair removal is visible progress, but dander is fine and airborne. Pairing spot vacuuming with room filtration covers both; see our air purifiers for pet homes comparison.

What a handheld vacuum should never clean

Some dust is a hazard, and a household vacuum, handheld or not, can turn it into an airborne one.

  • Possible asbestos debris. The EPA’s homeowner guidance is direct: don’t dust, sweep or vacuum debris that may contain asbestos, and have removal or major repair done by trained professionals. Crumbs of old popcorn ceiling, pipe insulation, vermiculite or broken floor tile from an older home fall in this category. Our asbestos cleanup guide explains the safe sequence.
  • Paint dust in a pre-1978 home. The EPA’s lead-safe guidance for do-it-yourselfers calls for HEPA vacuums and wet cleaning after renovation work in homes that may have lead-based paint, along with containment and protective gear. A small washable-filter hand vac is not that tool. See our guide to lead paint dust before cleaning up after any sanding or scraping.
  • Visible mold growth. Vacuuming moldy material spreads spores. Clean hard surfaces with detergent and water, dry them thoroughly, and fix the moisture source.
  • Liquids, unless the listing says otherwise. Only one listing on this shelf mentions wet pickup tips. Water in a dry-only unit damages the motor and turns a filter into a mold source.

Batteries, charging and care

Every pick here runs on lithium-ion cells. Follow the charger and storage instructions in the manual, and don’t leave a unit charging on a soft surface or near heat. A swollen battery or hot housing means it is time to stop using the tool. Several smaller-seller listings charge over USB-C, which is convenient in a car but means you depend on the cable and adapter you use; a wall mount or charging dock, mentioned by five listings, keeps the vacuum charged and visible.

Care is simple and often skipped. Empty the cup after each use, tap or rinse the filter per the manual, and let washable filters dry completely, as the manual directs, before refitting. A damp filter loses suction and can grow mildew. Brush rolls on pet tools need hair cut free regularly unless they are self-cleaning.

When a hand vac is not enough

A handheld vacuum maintains a clean house; it does not diagnose a dusty or musty one. If dust returns within a day or two, if a room smells musty after cleaning, or if family members have allergy or asthma symptoms that improve when they leave the house, the source is usually in the building: duct leakage, a failing filter rack, a damp crawl space or hidden water damage. An inspector or indoor air quality professional can trace those causes. Front Range homeowners and buyers can reach out through our contact page to connect with a vetted local inspector.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best handheld vacuum for most homes?

For quick everyday pickups, a light name-brand hand vac with a charging dock is the most practical choice, because it stays charged and within reach. Households with pets on the furniture should favor a model with a powered brush, ideally one that resists hair wrap. No hand vac replaces a full-size vacuum for whole floors.

Are HEPA filters in handheld vacuums real HEPA?

A filter labeled HEPA may use HEPA-grade media, but the vacuum only performs like a HEPA system if the air path is sealed so air cannot bypass the filter. On the listings we compared, every HEPA claim came from a washable filter with no sealed-system claim or test standard named. Treat those as fine-dust filters rather than certified HEPA systems.

How much suction does a handheld vacuum need?

Pa ratings on hand vac listings measure sealed suction without stating test conditions, and major brands often give no figure at all, so numbers cannot be compared across brands. For crumbs, grit and pet hair, design matters more: a powered brush for fabric, a narrow nozzle for crevices and a filter that stays clean. Compare Pa only within one seller's lineup.

Can a handheld vacuum help with allergies?

It helps by removing visible hair and debris between full cleanings, but the EPA's asthma-trigger guidance recommends weekly vacuuming of carpets and upholstered furniture with a HEPA-filter vacuum for allergen control. Use a sealed HEPA full-size vacuum for that job and keep the hand vac for spot cleaning. People with allergies should leave the room during vacuuming.

Is it safe to vacuum dust after a renovation in an older home?

Not with an ordinary hand vac. The EPA says not to dust, sweep or vacuum debris that may contain asbestos, and its lead-safe guidance for pre-1978 homes calls for HEPA vacuums and wet cleaning after renovation work. If the material or paint could contain asbestos or lead, have it tested and cleaned by trained professionals.
