Step 1: Prepare the Sampling Area

Accredited Lab Requirements: NVLAP and AIHA-LAP

Not all labs are created equal. The two accreditations buyers should look for:

NVLAP (National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program): Administered by NIST. The federal-government-recognized program for asbestos bulk material analysis. NVLAP-accredited labs are listed on the NIST website with their accreditation number.

When DIY Sampling Is Appropriate (and When It Isn’t)

DIY sampling is reasonable for:

Pre-renovation planning: confirming whether materials you intend to disturb contain asbestos, so you can decide whether to commission abatement.

Pre-purchase due diligence: confirming whether suspect materials in a home you’re considering are asbestos-containing.

Documenting the asbestos status of materials for future reference.

DIY sampling is not appropriate for:

Regulated abatement projects requiring CDPHE notification (need a certified inspector).

Air sampling for clearance (need an Air Monitoring Specialist).

Vermiculite (Zonolite) attic insulation, which requires specialized handling and is best sampled by a professional with appropriate respiratory protection.

PLM vs. TEM Analysis: When Each Is Appropriate
