The FLIR C5 is a pocket-sized standalone thermal camera with a 160 x 120 sensor, FLIR’s MSX image enhancement and Wi-Fi connection to FLIR’s Ignite cloud service. It is designed for inspectors, electricians and HVAC technicians who need to capture images on site and turn them into reports, and it also works for homeowners who want a dedicated tool rather than a phone attachment. What sets it apart is the documentation workflow: images upload directly to the cloud for reporting and emailing, backed by FLIR’s 2-10 warranty.

FLIR C5 (89401-0202) — pocket thermal camera, 160 x 120 with MSX, -4 to 752 °F, Wi-Fi to FLIR Ignite cloud, 0.42 lb, 2-10 warranty

How It Compares

The Only Thermal Camera in This Comparison That Lists Direct Cloud Upload

The comparison results held 20 listings, of which 10 are thermal cameras; the rest are unrelated cosmetics and mirrors that matched the word “compact.” Among the 10 thermal cameras, two others mention Wi-Fi (the TOPDON TC004 and Thermal Master Thor002, both pairing with a phone app), but the C5 is the only one whose listing describes uploading straight to a cloud service and building reports from there.

On image detail, the C5’s 160 x 120 sensor sits in the middle. Seven of the 10 comparison cameras state a native resolution: two list 256 x 192, while the rest list 128 x 128, 120 x 90, 96 x 96 or 4,800 pixels. Only FLIR’s own TG165-X also names MSX and the 2-10 warranty, and the TG165-X’s 4,800-pixel sensor is far coarser than the C5’s.

The C5’s 752 °F ceiling is lower than the 1,022 °F listed by seven of the comparison cameras, which matters little for home use but can for industrial work. The listing does not state battery life, screen size, frame rate or a drop rating, all of which several competitors spell out.

Who It’s For — and Who Should Skip It

The C5 fits inspectors and trades who need clean, shareable images and a long detector warranty in a camera that fits a shirt pocket. Homeowners on a tighter budget, or anyone who wants the highest native resolution or a published battery runtime, may prefer one of the 256 x 192 handhelds or a phone module.

Using It at Home

For energy checks, wait for a meaningful indoor-outdoor temperature difference. Colorado’s cold, dry winter mornings make missing insulation, leaky can lights, attic access panels and poorly sealed windows stand out clearly. Summer afternoons reveal attic heat radiating through ceilings and ductwork running through unconditioned space.

  • Scan ceilings and walls near bathrooms, laundry rooms and the water heater for cool, irregular patches.
  • Check the electrical panel and heavily loaded outlets for isolated hot spots.
  • Upload a before-and-after set when sealing or insulating to see what changed.

A thermal image is a lead, not a diagnosis. Confirm suspected moisture with a moisture meter, and call a licensed electrician for any unusually hot breaker or connection. For a professional inspection that includes thermal imaging, contact our team.
