  • Misreading reflections on metal. Polished or brushed-metal surfaces reflect ambient thermal patterns rather than their own temperature. The user appears in the reflection as a thermal silhouette.
  • Scanning without thermal differential. Mid-day in moderate weather with HVAC off produces images that show nothing useful.
  • Treating cold spots as proof of moisture. Cold spots can be drafts, uninsulated framing, or air leakage. Moisture confirmation requires a moisture meter.
  • Trusting low-resolution images at distance. An 80×60 sensor seeing "something" at 20 feet is showing a 4-pixel cluster, which is not enough data to draw any reliable conclusion.
  • Letting the phone screen brightness drop in sunlight. Outdoor scanning can wash out the screen entirely; shade the phone or scan from indoors.

Care and storage

Phone attachments share thermal-camera care requirements:

  • Lens care. The germanium-glass lens is delicate. Avoid touching the front element; clean with the manufacturer-supplied tissue and isopropyl alcohol if necessary.
  • Storage case. Most attachments ship in a small carrying case. Use it. The lens is far more vulnerable to scratch and crack than the rest of the device.
  • USB-C connector. Repeated connect-disconnect cycles wear the connector. Avoid yanking the attachment by the body — grasp at the connector area.
