What Mildew Black Actually Is

“Mildew” is a common-language term for surface fungal growth that grows on top of a material rather than penetrating into the substrate. The CDC uses “mold” as the broader umbrella term and “mildew” mostly as informal shorthand for early-stage or surface-only growth. The species most commonly responsible for the dark mildew homeowners see — particularly under shower conditions — is Cladosporium, especially the dark species that can appear olive-green to almost black.

Other species also contribute to “black mildew” appearance. Alternaria presents as dark green-to-black colonies on damp window frames and shower curtains. Aureobasidium pullulans turns from pink in young growth to black as colonies mature on damp wood and caulk. Mature Aspergillus niger looks unambiguously black. The species mix in any particular black mildew patch can include several of these growing together.

What black mildew is usually NOT, in routine bathroom and surface settings, is Stachybotrys chartarum — the toxic black mold most people picture when they see anything dark on a wall. Stachybotrys requires sustained-saturation cellulose substrates, which routine bathroom mildew doesn’t typically provide.

Mildew vs. Mold: Why the Distinction Matters

The functional difference between surface mildew and deeper substrate-embedded mold determines whether cleanup will actually work or whether the growth returns within weeks.

Surface Mildew

Lives on top of a material. Wipes off with a damp cloth. Doesn’t penetrate the substrate. Common on glazed tile, glass, sealed metal, fiberglass tub surrounds, painted drywall (the paint film provides a non-porous barrier), silicone caulk surface, and sealed wood. Cleanup with detergent and water or diluted bleach typically removes the growth completely. Recurrence depends on whether the moisture condition that supported the growth has been corrected.

Substrate-Embedded Mold

Has hyphae penetrating into the material. Doesn’t wipe off completely — surface staining lifts but the colony beneath survives. Common on paper-faced drywall, ceiling tile, unsealed wood, carpet padding, fiberglass insulation, and the inside of porous grout. Surface cleaning with bleach treats only the visible top layer; the colony underneath remains viable and grows back. The EPA’s guidance is to remove rather than clean porous materials with established mold growth.

The Wipe Test

A simple field test distinguishes surface mildew from substrate-embedded growth. Wipe a small corner of the patch firmly with a damp white cloth. Surface mildew transfers cleanly to the cloth, leaving the substrate beneath looking clean. Substrate-embedded mold transfers only partially — the cloth picks up surface material, but the underlying area still shows staining or discoloration.

The test isn’t perfect (some surface growths on textured substrates leave residue even when the colony is purely surface), but it’s a useful first screen. Combined with the substrate type (porous vs. non-porous), it usually identifies which cleanup approach is appropriate.

Where Black Mildew Shows Up Most

Specific surfaces in a typical home host black mildew growth more often than others. Knowing the high-probability locations focuses routine inspection.

Shower Tile and Glass

Hot showers leave the bathroom at high humidity for hours. Cooler tile and glass surfaces condense moisture and support Cladosporium growth in the soap film. Daily wiping after showers prevents most accumulation; weekly cleaning with bathroom cleaner handles what remains.

Shower Caulk

Silicone caulk along tub-to-tile and shower-to-floor joints accumulates soap residue and skin cells. Dark mildew often shows as a band along the caulk surface. Surface cleaning works initially; eventually the silicone matrix itself takes on dark coloration that can’t be cleaned, requiring re-caulking.

Window Frames and Sills

Single-pane and older double-pane windows condense indoor humidity during cold weather. Wood and vinyl frames support Cladosporium and Alternaria growth. Aluminum frames produce more condensation than thermally broken vinyl or fiberglass.

Painted Bathroom Walls and Ceilings

Surface mildew on painted walls above showers and in poorly vented bathrooms appears as small dark dots that grow into patches over weeks. The paint film provides non-porous protection until it begins to fail, at which point the colony can penetrate to the drywall beneath.

Refrigerator and Freezer Door Seals

The rubber gaskets on refrigerator and freezer doors trap moisture and condensation. Dark mildew along the gasket folds is common. Wipe periodically with a mild detergent solution.

Washing Machine Door Seals

Front-load washing machines have rubber boot seals that trap water and detergent residue. Dark mildew in the seal folds is one of the most common complaints with this washer type. Leave the door open between uses to allow the seal to dry.

Cleaning Black Mildew on Surfaces

When Surface Mildew Isn’t Just Surface

Three signals indicate that what looks like surface mildew has actually penetrated the substrate or is fed by a hidden moisture source.

Cleaning Doesn’t Fully Remove It

If detergent or bleach removes the surface staining but a shadowed area remains underneath, the growth has penetrated below the surface. Common on caulk that’s taken on darkening through the silicone matrix and on grout where mold has established below the visible surface.

It Returns Within Days of Cleaning

Recurrence within days indicates the moisture source supporting growth has not been addressed. The mildew itself may be only surface-deep, but the conditions producing it are constant enough to re-establish growth quickly.

The Substrate Is Soft or Spongy

Painted drywall that feels soft when pressed firmly indicates the gypsum core has been damaged — either by direct moisture exposure or by mold growth that’s consumed the paper face. Surface cleaning won’t fix that; the drywall typically needs replacement.

Prevention That Actually Works

Most surface mildew is preventable with moisture control. Indoor humidity below 60 percent (verified with a $10 hygrometer) addresses the condensation pathway. Bathroom exhaust fans running during showers and for 20 minutes afterward, ducted to exterior air, remove the humidity at the source. Squeegeeing shower walls after each use removes the water film that supports surface growth. Leaving washing machine doors and refrigerator door seals open periodically allows the rubber to dry.

Replacing caulk every five to seven years before it breaks down prevents the slow shift from “mildew on caulk” to “mildew in caulk.” Re-sealing grout annually maintains the protective layer that keeps mold from establishing below the surface.

What Black Mildew Doesn’t Mean

Several common misconceptions are worth addressing. Black mildew on shower caulk is not Stachybotrys in nearly all cases. Cleaning small surface mildew patches doesn’t require respirator-grade PPE — basic gloves and an N95 mask are sufficient. Surface mildew exposure for healthy adults rarely produces severe illness, though it can trigger allergy and asthma symptoms in sensitive occupants. Bleach is not always the right cleaner — on porous substrates it provides only superficial treatment.

When to Call a Professional

Three scenarios escalate from surface-mildew DIY to professional involvement. First, growth larger than 10 square feet on porous materials. Surface Mildew on Outdoor Materials
