Best Door Knob (2026): 7 Keyed, Privacy and Passage Picks
The best door knob is the right function on the right door. A front entry needs a keyed lock and ideally a deadbolt; a bathroom needs a privacy knob that someone outside can open in an emergency; a closet needs a plain passage knob with no lock at all. Buying the wrong function is the most common mistake, followed closely by buying a knob that does not fit the hole and latch already in the door. This roundup compares seven knobs across those three functions on what their listings state about ANSI/BHMA grade, cycle testing, emergency release, keys and warranty, then explains how to measure a door and what the grades mean.

How we compared: we compared 12 current Amazon listings for round door knobs (keyed entry, privacy and passage) on what each listing states: function, ANSI/BHMA grade, cycle-test claims, materials, backset and door thickness fit, emergency release, keying and warranty. The search also returned two multipacks of square privacy levers, which we set aside because they are levers rather than knobs, though they do the same job. We did not lab-test or install any of this hardware. Prices and availability change, so check the current listing before buying.

The Only Knob on the Shelf You Can Rekey Yourself
Eight of the 12 knob listings are keyed entry locks. This Kwikset is the only one that lets the owner rekey the cylinder at home, using the SmartKey tool in the box, so a new homeowner can make the lock match an existing key or retire keys held by a previous owner without replacing hardware. Every other keyed listing ships with its own keys; to change them you call a locksmith or buy a new lock.
It is also one of three listings that state BHMA certification in three separate categories (security, durability and finish), all from Kwikset, and one of three with a lifetime mechanical and finish warranty, again all Kwikset. No listing on this shelf claims Grade 2 or Grade 1.
A keyed knob by itself is not strong front-door security; the latch is short and spring-loaded. Kwikset’s own listing recommends this knob for exterior-facing doors, but pair it with a separate deadbolt on any entry door. The listing does not state a cycle-test figure.
Pros
- DIY rekeying with included tool
- BHMA Grade 3 in three categories
- Lifetime warranty
Cons
- Grade 3, not Grade 2 or 1
- Needs a separate deadbolt on entry doors
- Only 2 keys included

Kwikset Tylo 93001-923 — privacy, BHMA Grade 3, emergency unlock tool included, polished brass, standard fit, lifetime warranty
The Only Privacy Knob That Includes a Dedicated Emergency Tool
Three listings are round privacy knobs: this Kwikset, the Probrico six-pack and the Copper Creek. All privacy knobs are meant to be opened from outside in an emergency, but they handle it differently. Probrico says a coin or flat screwdriver works; the Copper Creek listing does not describe its release at all. Only the Kwikset ships with a purpose-made emergency unlock tool, which you can keep on the door trim above a child’s bathroom so it is never hunting time.
That matters. The CPSC’s childproofing guidance says door knob covers and locks should still let an adult open a door quickly in an emergency, and the U.S. Fire Administration notes residents may have less than 2 minutes to escape once a smoke alarm sounds. Privacy locks are for privacy, never for keeping someone in.
Like its keyed sibling, it carries BHMA Grade 3 in three categories and a lifetime warranty. The trade-offs are the polished brass finish in this listing and the lack of a stated cycle-test figure.
Pros
- Emergency unlock tool included
- BHMA Grade 3, lifetime warranty
- Simple keyless function
Cons
- Polished brass may not suit modern decor
- No cycle-test figure stated
- Sold singly

| Finish | Polished brass |
| Note | Title says mobile home; fit stated for standard door sizes |
| Model / warranty | 92001-519; lifetime mechanical and finish warranty |
Kwikset 92001-519 — passage (non-locking), BHMA Grade 3, polished brass, 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 in doors, adjustable backset, lifetime warranty
The Only Passage Function in the Comparison
Of the 12 knob listings, 11 lock in some way. This Kwikset is the only passage knob: it latches the door shut and releases from either side with a turn, with no button and no key. That is what closets, pantries, laundry rooms and hallway doors usually need, and it removes any chance of a toddler locking themselves in a closet.
The title calls it a mobile home knob, which can confuse buyers. The listing states the same fit as the other Kwikset knobs, standard doors from 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches with an adjustable backset, so check those two measurements rather than the title.
The listing names BHMA Grade 3 in three categories and a lifetime warranty. Its only real limitation is the polished brass finish shown here; match it to the other hardware in the hall.
Pros
- True non-locking passage function
- BHMA Grade 3, lifetime warranty
- Standard fit dimensions stated
Cons
- “Mobile home” title causes confusion
- Polished brass finish in this listing
- No cycle-test figure

Probrico DL609BKBK — 6-pack privacy, ANSI Grade 3, 250,000+ cycles, stainless, matte black, coin release, standard fit
The Only Privacy Knob That Lets You Choose the Button’s Orientation
A small annoyance with many privacy knobs is that the turn button ends up sideways or upside down relative to its neighbors. The Probrico listing is the only one that addresses it, explaining how to set the button horizontal or vertical before installing. It also states a cycle test past 250,000 turns alongside its ANSI Grade 3 claim; among the round knobs, only three other brands give a cycle number (BESTTEN and RAFECIEE at 250,000, Lanwandeng at 200,000).
The six-pack makes it the practical choice for matching every bedroom and bathroom in one project. The listing is unusually honest about limits: it says these knobs are for interior privacy rooms, not exterior security, and that the outside coin release is a safety feature so no one gets locked in.
Check one detail before buying six. The latch faceplate and strike are one piece and not removable, so older doors with an unusual mortise cut may need adjustment. The listing does not state a warranty.
Pros
- Six matching privacy knobs
- ANSI Grade 3 plus a cycle figure
- Clear, honest use guidance
Cons
- No warranty stated
- Non-removable faceplate may not fit old doors
- Coin release is less tidy than a tool

5. Copper Creek BK2030SS — Best Single Stainless Privacy Knob

Satin stainless privacy knob, ANSI Grade-3 certified, all-metal build, reversible, for one bedroom or bathroom door.

| Model / warranty | BK2030SS; warranty not stated (30-day return window mentioned) |
Copper Creek BK2030SS — privacy, ANSI Grade 3, satin stainless, all-metal, standard fit, single pack
The Only Single-Pack Privacy Knob in a Neutral Stainless Finish
The three round privacy knobs on the shelf come in polished brass (Kwikset), matte black six-packs (Probrico) and this satin stainless single. If you are replacing one sticky bathroom knob and the house has silver-tone hardware, it is the closest match without buying more than you need. The listing says the finish resists fingerprints and tarnish.
It names ANSI Grade 3 certification in the title, putting it among the 7 of 12 listings that state a grade at all. The listing describes an all-metal chassis meant to resist loosening with daily use.
It leaves important questions open. The listing does not explain how the lock is released from outside in an emergency (most privacy knobs use a small hole for a pin or flat tool), it states no warranty beyond a 30-day return window, and it gives no cycle-test figure.
Pros
- ANSI Grade 3 named
- Neutral satin stainless finish
- Single pack for one door
Cons
- Emergency release not described
- No warranty stated
- No cycle-test figure

Amazon Basics AB-DH523-MB — keyed knob + deadbolt, keyed alike, 4 KW1 keys, brass/steel, 2-1/8 in bore, 1-yr warranty
The Only Set Here That Pairs a Knob With a Deadbolt
Eight listings are keyed knobs, but only this Amazon Basics set adds a deadbolt, the part that actually secures an exterior door. A deadbolt throws a solid bolt into the frame that cannot be pushed back with a card the way a spring latch can. Both pieces use the same key, and the set includes four of them on the KW1 keyway, the same keyway the Kwikset entry knob uses.
The listing also states the bore and latch hole sizes, 2-1/8 inches and 1 inch, the standard prep on most U.S. doors. That lets you confirm fit before ordering, and it is the detail most other listings skip.
What it lacks is any ANSI/BHMA grade, a cycle-test figure or rekeying. The warranty is 1 year. For a front door, a deadbolt is only as strong as the strike and the screws holding it; use long screws into the framing and check that the door is not loose in the frame.
Pros
- Includes a keyed-alike deadbolt
- Four keys, common KW1 keyway
- Bore and latch hole sizes stated
Cons
- No ANSI/BHMA grade named
- One-year warranty
- No rekey feature

7. Lanwandeng DNB-ET1P — Best Keyed Knobs That Share One Key

Matte black keyed knob, ANSI Grade 3, past 200,000 cycles, with every lock in the line sharing the same key.
Check price on Amazon$9.99 as of Oct 20, 2026 7:33 am GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price. Why we like it
- Every lock opens with the same key
- ANSI Grade 3 and 200,000+ cycles stated
- Stainless knobs with copper lock core
- Matte black finish resists corrosion per listing
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Function | Keyed entry, interior or exterior |
| Grade / testing | ANSI Grade 3; exceeds 200,000 cycles per listing |
| Keying | All locks keyed the same; 3 brass keys per pack |
| Materials | Stainless steel knobs; high-grade copper lock |
| Fit | Doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 in; 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 in backset; non-removable latch plate |
| Model / warranty | DNB-ET1P; warranty not stated in listing |
Lanwandeng DNB-ET1P — keyed entry, ANSI Grade 3, 200,000+ cycles, keyed alike across packs, stainless, matte black
The Only Single Keyed Knob Sold Keyed Alike Across Packs
Buy two BESTTEN knobs and you get two different keys; that listing says separate purchases are keyed differently. The Lanwandeng listing says the opposite: all of its keys are the same, so one key opens every Lanwandeng knob you buy. For a home office, a garage entry door and a storage room, that is one key on the ring instead of three. (The Amazon Basics set above is also keyed alike, but only within the box.)
It states ANSI Grade 3 and a cycle test past 200,000. For context, BESTTEN, RAFECIEE and Probrico claim 250,000 cycles, so the figure here is a little lower, but it is still more than most listings disclose.
The downside of identical keys is that anyone with another Lanwandeng key, from any buyer, can open yours, so use it where convenience matters more than security, not on a main entry door. The listing does not state a warranty, and the latch plate is not removable.
Pros
- One key for every knob
- ANSI Grade 3 and cycle figure stated
- Corrosion-resistant matte black
Cons
- Identical keys across all buyers
- No warranty stated
- Non-removable latch plate

Keyed, privacy or passage: choosing the function
- Keyed entry: a key outside, a turn button inside. Use on exterior doors (always with a deadbolt), garage-to-house doors, home offices and storage rooms.
- Privacy: a turn button or push button inside and an emergency release outside. Use on bathrooms and bedrooms.
- Passage: no lock. Use on closets, pantries, laundry rooms and hallways.
- Dummy: a fixed knob with no latch, for double closet doors or doors held by ball catches. None of the listings here is a dummy knob.
The emergency side of privacy locks is not a technicality. The USFA’s escape-planning guidance says to find two ways out of every room and to make sure doors and windows are not blocked. A bedroom lock that a parent cannot open quickly from the hall works against that plan. The CPSC’s childproofing guide makes the same point about door knob covers: they should keep children out of hazardous rooms but still let an adult open the door quickly in an emergency.
Levers are the alternative to round knobs. They are easier for small hands, arthritic hands and anyone carrying groceries, which is why many designers choose them for accessible homes. Lever-style privacy sets showed up in our search too; the same function rules apply.
What ANSI/BHMA grades mean on a door knob
The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) writes performance standards, approved by ANSI, that test locksets for cycle durability, strength and finish. Grade 1 is the most demanding level, aimed at commercial doors; Grade 2 covers heavier residential and light commercial use; Grade 3 is the residential baseline. Seven of the 12 knob listings here state Grade 3, and none claims Grade 2 or Grade 1.
Read the wording closely. The three Kwikset listings state Grade 3 certification for security, durability and finish separately. Other listings say “meets,” “confirm with” or “independently rated to” Grade 3, which is not always the same as a certified product. Cycle-test claims (200,000 to 250,000 turns here) are manufacturer statements and are useful mainly for comparing listings that disclose them.
For interior doors, Grade 3 is usually fine. For a front door, the grade of the deadbolt and the strength of the strike plate and frame matter much more than the knob.
Measuring before you buy
- Door thickness: all seven picks fit 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches, the common range for interior and exterior doors. Thicker custom doors need a different lock; one listing on the shelf (Brigligh) states fit up to 2 inches.
- Backset: the distance from the door edge to the center of the knob hole. Every pick here adjusts between 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inches.
- Bore and latch holes: standard prep is a 2-1/8 inch bore and a 1 inch edge hole, sizes the Amazon Basics listing states.
- Faceplate style: some latches have a removable faceplate (round drive-in or square), and several listings here have one-piece plates. Match the shape cut into your door edge or plan to chisel.
- Handing: all seven picks are reversible for left- or right-swing doors.
Older Front Range homes, particularly pre-1960 bungalows in Denver and Colorado Springs, sometimes have mortise locks in thick solid doors. A standard tubular knob will not drop into a mortise pocket without a conversion plate. Our door knob guide walks through replacement steps and conversion options.
When the knob is not the problem
A knob that will not latch, binds when turned or needs the door lifted to lock usually points to the door, the hinges or the frame, not the hardware. In Colorado, clay soils that swell and shrink with moisture move foundations and framing, and a door that latched fine last winter can bind after a wet spring. Sagging over a door can also point to a header problem; our door header guide explains what to look for.
Exterior doors face sun and hail on the Front Range, which is hard on finishes; satin stainless and quality plated finishes tend to hold up better than painted ones. Drafts around a closed entry door are an energy issue too: ENERGY STAR lists drafts around closed doors and visible gaps around trim as signs of air leaks that sealing can fix. Sliding patio doors use different hardware entirely; see our sliding door lock and patio door guides.
If several doors in a house bind, crack appears above door frames or exterior doors will not seal, it is worth having the structure looked at. A home inspection checks door operation, framing and signs of foundation movement, and our structure and exterior hiring guide explains which pro to call next.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best door knob for an exterior door?
A keyed entry knob paired with a separate deadbolt. The knob's spring latch keeps the door closed, while the deadbolt provides the real security. Look for a stated ANSI/BHMA grade, a solid strike plate and long screws into the framing.
What is the difference between a privacy and a passage door knob?
A privacy knob locks from inside with a button and has an emergency release outside, for bathrooms and bedrooms. A passage knob has no lock and simply latches the door, for closets and hallways.
What does ANSI Grade 3 mean on a door knob?
ANSI/BHMA grades rate locksets on durability, strength and finish. Grade 1 is the most demanding, Grade 2 is heavier residential, and Grade 3 is the residential baseline. Grade 3 is typical for interior knobs; listings vary in whether they claim certification or simply say they meet the standard.
How do I know what size door knob to buy?
Measure the door thickness and the backset, the distance from the door edge to the center of the knob hole. Most knobs fit doors 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches thick with a 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inch backset, and standard holes are a 2-1/8 inch bore and a 1 inch latch hole.
Can you open a privacy door knob from the outside?
Yes. Privacy knobs have an emergency release on the outside, usually a small hole for a pin or flat tool, or a slot for a coin. Keep the tool near the door so an adult can open it quickly if a child locks themselves in.
