Step One: Document Before Disturbing

Photograph the visible mold before doing anything else. Include wide shots showing the room context and close-ups showing detail and color. Note the date, the room, and any obvious moisture cues (a leak, a recent flood, a humidity issue). If the mold is in a closed-off area, do not start poking around — disturbance aerosolizes spores and spreads contamination to other rooms.

Step Two: Stop the Water

Cut out contaminated drywall back to dry framing, double-bag the removed material in heavy-mil plastic, and dispose per local regulations. Replace contaminated insulation. Pull and discard contaminated carpet pad; carpet itself can sometimes be saved if it dries fast enough, but this is decision-by-decision.

Step Seven: Dry Completely

After cleanup, the area must be dried completely before reconstruction. Air movers, dehumidifiers, and time are the standard tools. Rushing reconstruction over still-wet materials reintroduces the conditions that caused the mold in the first place.

Step Eight: Reconstruct With Mold Awareness

When rebuilding, consider mold-resistant materials in the affected area. Paperless gypsum board, cement board in wet zones, foam insulation rather than kraft-faced fiberglass, and sealed concrete or tile flooring rather than carpet all reduce future risk.
