What is a radon detector used for? More than just a one-shot test. The CRM’s role is verification across seasons, confirmation after mitigation, response to building envelope changes, and quiet awareness of the home’s actual radon profile over time. What a radon detector is and how it differs from a test kit

A test kit (charcoal canister or alpha-track) is a single-use detector that produces one time-averaged result after lab analysis. The kit goes to the lab; the lab reports a number; the kit’s done. How a CRM displays its data

Most consumer CRMs show a current reading (real-time or short-rolling-average pCi/L), a 24-hour average, a 7-day average, and a long-term average (30-day, 90-day, or 1-year depending on the unit). Smartphone apps typically display the same data with historical graphs.

Interpretation: the short-rolling-average can swing significantly with weather and HVAC patterns. Calibration and battery life

Indoor radon levels respond to building pressure changes in interesting ways. When the furnace fires up during heating season, the building’s stack-effect convection strengthens, pulling more soil gas (and more radon) into the basement. A CRM running through a heating cycle often shows a small uptick in radon during the first few hours of furnace operation each morning. The pattern is visible only with continuous monitoring.

Weather pressure swings produce similar effects. A storm system arrives, barometric pressure drops, soil gas is released more easily through the soil-to-air interface, and indoor radon climbs over the next twelve to twenty-four hours. The CRM shows this as a multi-day trend line that returns to baseline as the storm passes.

None of these patterns are emergencies. Average radon over weeks and months matters more than hourly peaks for lung-cancer risk framing. But the patterns inform the homeowner’s understanding of why a short-term test might have caught an unusually high or low reading, and they help interpret whether the home’s typical average is closer to 3.0 or closer to 6.0.

What a detector cannot do

Most consumer CRMs are calibrated for residential indoor air at room temperature. They are not suitable for outdoor measurement (radon dilutes too rapidly outdoors to register reliably). They are not suitable for industrial workspaces with high-airflow ventilation or unusual environmental conditions. They are not suitable for water testing (waterborne radon requires a different test).

Consumer CRMs also do not detect radon decay products specifically — they detect radon itself, and the EPA action level framework is based on radon concentration, not decay-product concentration. Some specialized professional instruments measure decay-product concentration directly, but those are not consumer products.

Setup and onboarding

Most consumer CRMs pair with a smartphone app over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi for setup. The app guides the user through registering the unit, naming the location, and selecting the appropriate measurement settings. After setup, the unit typically takes 24 to 168 hours (depending on the model) to produce its first reliable reading because the internal sensor needs to stabilize.

During the initial stabilization period, the unit’s reported values may be erratic. This is normal. Once stable, the unit produces consistent rolling averages and a long-term average that approaches the home’s actual radon level over the following weeks.

Combined strategy: kit + CRM
