Dust hazard assessment after renovation or in a known older home

Hire a certified lead inspector with XRF. The written report is required for many real estate, rental, and renovation activities, and the XRF approach detects lead under newer paint layers — something DIY swabs cannot do.

Children and lead exposure

Lead is particularly hazardous to children under six. The CDC’s blood lead level (BLL) reference value is 3.5 µg/dL as of the 2021 update — children with BLLs at or above that level should receive medical case management and environmental investigation. Consumer lead test kits test the environment, not people.
