How to Check for Asbestos in Home: Set the Date First

Before walking a single room, write down the construction year. Asbestos use peaked in U.S. residential construction from the 1930s through the late 1970s and persisted in certain product categories into the late 1980s. The decision framework changes by era.

  • Pre-1980: Strong suspicion in multiple categories. Sample before disturbing any visually suspect material.
  • 1980 to 1990: Mixed suspicion. Certain categories (vinyl floor tile, joint compound, some mastics) continued to contain asbestos for years after others were reformulated.
