How to Test Your Drinking Water for Lead the Right Way
If you want to know whether your tap water carries lead, one thing matters more than which kit you buy: how you collect the sample. Lead almost never rides in from the treatment plant. It dissolves off the pipes, solder, and brass fixtures inside your own service line and plumbing, so a sloppy sample can read clean on a bad-plumbing home or spike high on a home that is basically fine. The EPA does not require homeowners to test their own water, and most municipal supplies are treated to control corrosion. Testing still pays off in three situations: the home was built before 1986 (the year Congress banned lead solder and lead pipe in new plumbing), a pregnant resident or a child under six lives there, or the property is on a private well. Two numbers frame everything that follows. The federal action level for lead in drinking water is 15 parts per billion (ppb) — and under the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements the EPA finalized in October 2024, that threshold drops to 10 ppb once utilities reach compliance in 2027. The CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics both hold that no blood lead level is safe for a child. Put together: any result above zero is worth acting on, even one comfortably under the action level.
Collecting a first-draw sample that counts
A first-draw sample captures water that has sat still in your plumbing long enough to pick up whatever lead is there to pick up. Get this wrong and the result is meaningless.
- Order a bottle from a certified lab first. Most kits ship a 250 mL wide-mouth bottle, an instruction card, and a return label. Do not improvise with a jar.
- Stop using that tap for 6 to 12 hours. Overnight is standard. No drinking, no flushing, no dishwasher or laundry on the same line. Water that stagnates in lead-bearing pipe absorbs the most lead, which is exactly what you want to measure.
- Sample the cold-water kitchen tap, first thing, no flush. The very first water out of the tap goes straight into the bottle. Do not run it first, do not remove the aerator, and do not sample from a filtered faucet or a fridge dispenser — the filter hides the very thing you are testing for.

Picking a lab and a kit
Use a laboratory certified for drinking water analysis under the Safe Drinking Water Act. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment publishes a list of state-certified labs, and national mail-in providers list their certifications too. Certification matters because a certified lab runs the sample on ICP-MS or graphite-furnace atomic absorption, which reliably detects lead down to a fraction of a part per billion — the range that matters for children. Hardware-store dip strips cannot resolve lead at those low concentrations, so a “no color change” strip result tells you almost nothing.
A single-sample lead-only mail-in kit generally runs $25 to $75, analysis included. If you are on a well, a broader panel that adds copper, arsenic, nitrate, iron, manganese, and bacteria is the better buy at roughly $150 to $350, because a well owner is testing raw water, not a treated municipal supply. If a first-draw comes back above 15 ppb, collect a second sample after running the cold tap 30 to 60 seconds. When the flushed number drops sharply, the lead is coming from fixtures and pipe inside the house — easier and cheaper to fix. When the flushed number stays high, suspect the service line between the main and the home. That pattern tells you where to spend money.
Reducing exposure while you fix the source
For interim protection, a point-of-use filter at the kitchen tap carrying NSF/ANSI Standard 53 certification for lead reduction (or Standard 58 for reverse osmosis) is the standard recommendation. Whole-house point-of-entry filters generally do not remove lead, because most lead is added downstream by your own pipes. Do not rely on boiling — it concentrates lead rather than removing it, since water evaporates and the metal stays behind.
The durable fix is removing the lead source. Ask your utility for a service-line inventory; utilities are now required to publish one, and it will list your line as lead, galvanized, copper, or unknown. Utilities often replace the public-side portion at no cost, but the private side from the property line to the house is frequently the homeowner’s responsibility, and a full replacement typically runs $2,500 to $8,000 depending on length, depth, and surface restoration.
Wells, kids, and the bigger lead picture
Private wells sit outside EPA regulation, so the owner is responsible for testing.
