Why Does Mold Sometimes Produce a Smell?

Mold metabolism produces microbial volatile organic compounds, often abbreviated MVOCs. These are gas-phase byproducts of the colony breaking down organic substrate (drywall paper, wood, dust). Common MVOCs include geosmin, 1-octen-3-ol, and various ketones and alcohols. The “musty basement” smell is essentially a cocktail of these compounds at low concentrations. What About Mold That Looks Visible but Has No Smell?

Visible mold without odor is the most common pattern in bathroom and kitchen surface growth. Homeowners sometimes interpret the absence of smell as evidence that the visible growth is somehow “old” or “inactive” and skip the cleanup. That interpretation is wrong. Visible mold is by definition active enough to be visible, regardless of whether you can smell it, and the same cleanup standards apply.
