Best Under Cabinet Range Hood (2026): 7 Picks Compared
Choosing the best under cabinet range hood starts with the cabinet above your range, not the fan rating. The hood has to match the range width, fit the gap between cooktop and cabinet, and connect to whatever duct already runs up through that cabinet or out the back wall. Some kitchens have no duct at all and need a hood that recirculates. Others are replacing a tired builder-grade fan and want more airflow without triggering a makeup-air requirement. The seven picks below each fit one of those situations, followed by a buying guide on width, duct direction, ductless conversion, CFM and mounting height.

How we compared: we compared 15 current Amazon listings for under-cabinet range hoods on what each listing states: width, height of the hood body, rated airflow, top or rear venting, ductless conversion, filter type, noise figures, power connection and warranty. We did not lab-test any of these hoods or install them hands-on. Fourteen of the 15 are 30-inch hoods; one is a 36-inch model. Prices and availability change often, so check the current listing before buying.

Hauslane UC-PS18 — 30-in under-cabinet, ducted, 3-way venting, under 350 CFM, 6 speeds, baffle filters, 2-yr + lifetime motor
The Only Listing Built Around Staying Under the Makeup-Air Threshold
Six of the 15 listings claim more than 400 CFM. Hauslane goes the other way: its listing says the fan’s power control caps airflow below 350 CFM specifically to help owners avoid the cost of makeup-air equipment. No other listing on the shelf mentions makeup air at all. For a typical 30-inch electric range or a standard residential gas range, a well-ducted hood in that range is often plenty, and it keeps the installation simple.
The Hauslane is also the only listing with six fan speeds (every other listing that states a count offers two or three) and the only one with a lifetime motor warranty. It ships three duct adapters, which covers the 6-inch round and the 3-1/4 x 10 inch rectangular duct found behind many older hoods, in either top or rear direction.
What to check: at 22 inches deep and about 8 inches tall it is deeper and taller than most of the shelf, so measure the cabinet and your head clearance. The listing gives no decibel or sone figure, and it is ducted only, with no recirculating kit mentioned.
Pros
- Designed to avoid makeup-air requirements
- Adapters for round and rectangular ducts, top or rear
- Six speeds and baffle filters
- Lifetime motor warranty
Cons
- Not enough for a high-BTU pro-style range
- Ducted only
- Deep, heavy body at 41 pounds
- No noise figure stated

VIKIO HOME VK-RC13-30 — 30-in under-cabinet, 900 CFM dual DC motor, 3 speeds, 35–65 dB, mesh filters, damper adapter, 2-yr
Tied for the Quietest Low Speed Among the Listings That State Noise
Only five of the 15 listings give any decibel figure. Two of them claim 35 dB on low: this RC13 and its 36-inch RC10 sibling. The RC13 is the only 30-inch listing to make that claim, and it pairs it with a 900 CFM rating, so it covers a wide spread from quiet simmering to heavy searing. Its memory function restores the last speed used, a small convenience no other listing describes.
One inconsistency matters: the title says “baffle filters,” but the bullet points describe 5-layer aluminum mesh filters. Mesh catches grease well enough but loads up faster than stainless baffles. Expect mesh and plan to clean it often.
At 900 CFM this hood sits well above the 400 CFM level where many codes start requiring makeup air, so treat it as a hood for a serious cook with a properly sized duct, not a casual upgrade.
Pros
- Very low stated noise on low speed
- Strong 900 CFM rating
- Damper included with the duct adapter
Cons
- Filter type described inconsistently
- Likely needs makeup air in many jurisdictions
- Duct size not stated beyond rectangular adapter

VIKIO HOME VK-RC10-36 — 36-in under-cabinet, ducted, 1200 CFM dual motor, 35–60 dB, button controls, aluminum filters, 2-yr
The Only Listing Sized for a 36-Inch Cooktop
Fourteen of the 15 listings are 30-inch hoods. A 36-inch range under a 30-inch hood leaves three inches uncovered on each side, which is exactly where front-burner smoke escapes. This RC10-36 is the only listing here sized to match a 36-inch range. Hauslane mentions a 36-inch version of its hood, but that version is not the listing compared here.
Its 1200 CFM rating ties with its own 30-inch black twin for the highest on the shelf, and its stated 60 dB maximum ties with that twin for the lowest high-speed figure of any listing that gives one. The trade-off is that 1200 CFM nearly always needs makeup air and a generous duct, and the listing does not say what duct size it needs.
The mechanical buttons are a quiet advantage: rocker or push buttons tolerate grease and heat better over the years than touch panels, though that is a general observation, not a listing claim.
Pros
- Correct width for 36-inch ranges
- Highest airflow rating on the shelf
- Ties for lowest stated high-speed noise
Cons
- Duct size not stated
- 1200 CFM almost certainly needs makeup air
- Aluminum mesh filters, not baffles

4. OSTBA LF0576C1 — Best for Remote and Timer Control

30-inch under-cabinet hood, 750 CFM, gesture, touch and remote control, 1 to 15 minute timer, top or rear venting.

| Airflow | Up to 750 CFM, 3 speeds |
| Venting | Top or rear; duct size not stated in listing |
| Controls | Gesture, touch panel and included remote; 1 to 15 minute timer and delay shut-off |
| Filters | Stainless steel baffle filters, dishwasher-safe |
| Weight / warranty | About 31 pounds; 1-year manufacturer warranty |
OSTBA LF0576C1 — 30-in under-cabinet, 750 CFM, 3 speeds, gesture + touch + remote, 1–15 min timer, baffle filters, 1-yr
One of Two Listings With a Remote, and the Longest Timer
Two listings on the shelf include a remote control: this OSTBA and the AMZCHEF 750 CFM hood. Both rate 750 CFM and both use stainless baffle filters, and their model numbers are nearly identical (LF0576C1 versus UL-LF0176C1-ST), which suggests a shared design. The OSTBA listing is clearer about two points: it states top and rear venting, and it gives a timer range of 1 to 15 minutes, the longest stated on the shelf.
A remote matters more than it sounds for one group: shorter cooks, and anyone who can’t easily reach the front edge of a hood mounted above a deep range. Gesture control is handy with greasy hands but can trigger accidentally while reaching over the cooktop.
The warranty is one year, shorter than the 2-year terms on VIKIO and AMZCHEF listings, and there is no noise figure.
Pros
- Three ways to control the fan
- Long 1 to 15 minute timer
- Baffle filters, top or rear venting
Cons
- 750 CFM likely needs makeup air
- 1-year warranty
- No decibel or sone figure

5. VIKIO HOME RC15-30-A — Best Slim Hood With a Named Safety Listing

Slim 30-inch hardwired under-cabinet hood, 300 CFM, top or rear venting, ETL listed, charcoal kit optional.

|---|---|
| Width / height | 29.9 inches wide, 4.7 inches tall |
| Airflow | Up to 300 CFM, 2 speeds by rocker switch |
| Venting | Vertical top or horizontal rear; recirculating with charcoal filter sold separately |
| Filter | Three-layer aluminum mesh, hand-wash |
| Power / certification | Hardwired, no plug included; ETL listed |
| Weight / warranty | About 9 pounds; 2-year manufacturer warranty |
VIKIO HOME RC15-30-A — 30-in slim under-cabinet, 300 CFM, 2 speeds, top/rear, convertible, ETL listed, hardwired, 2-yr
The Only Under-Cabinet Listing Here That States a Safety Listing
None of the other 14 listings on this shelf states a safety listing in plain words. AMZCHEF’s model number starts with “UL,” which is not the same thing. A recognized listing mark on a hardwired appliance mounted above a burner is worth confirming, and this listing does the confirming for you.
It is also among the slimmest hoods compared. Four listings give a body height of about 4.7 inches (this one, two SNDOAS models and the Zomagas). A slim body leaves more space between cooktop and hood bottom, which helps when cabinets are hung low. Its 300 CFM rating suits most 30-inch electric ranges and lighter gas cooking.
The cons are practical: the mesh filter is hand-wash only by the listing’s description, the charcoal filter for ductless use is an extra purchase, and it is hardwired with no plug, so it needs a junction-box connection.
Pros
- ETL listing stated
- Thin profile for low cabinets
- Flexible top or rear venting
- 2-year warranty
Cons
- Charcoal filter sold separately
- Hardwired only
- Hand-wash mesh filter

- Top or rear duct outlet when venting outside
- Slim 4.7-inch body
- Simple 2-speed rocker controls
| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Width / height | 29.9 inches wide, 4.7 inches tall |
| Airflow | Up to 230 CFM, 2 speeds |
| Venting | Top (duct not included) or rear; ductless with included CF-3976 carbon filter |
| Filter | Aluminum mesh with carbon cotton composite |
| Power | Hardwired; plug kit PCK-GF3976 sold separately |
| Body / warranty | 430 brushed stainless; one-year limited warranty |
SNDOAS USGF3976S — 30-in slim under-cabinet, 230 CFM, 2 speeds, top/rear, carbon filter included, hardwired, 1-yr
One of Six Listings That Ship Ready for Recirculating Use
Six of the 15 listings include a carbon or charcoal filter in the box, so a kitchen with no duct can install them the same day. This SNDOAS is one of them and also offers both top and rear duct outlets for a later switch to outdoor venting. VIKIO’s RC15 and several others need a separately purchased charcoal filter to run ductless.
The listing is honest that 230 CFM is “moderate” and aimed at small households and apartments. Keep in mind what recirculation cannot do: the filter catches grease and some odor, but moisture, heat and combustion gases stay in the room. Our ductless range hood guide covers the limits in more depth.
One installation caution from a sibling SNDOAS listing: once the exhaust knockout is pried open, it cannot be closed again, so decide on ducted versus ductless before you start.
Pros
- Carbon filter in the box
- Top or rear venting option
- Slim and light
Cons
- Low 230 CFM rating
- Hardwired, plug sold separately
- No noise figure stated
- 1-year warranty

| Specification | Details |
|---|---|
| Width / height | 30 inches wide, 5.6 inches tall |
| Airflow | 200 CFM, 2 speeds |
| Filters | One aluminum mesh filter (ducted) and one aluminum and activated carbon composite (ductless); replace composite every 3 to 4 months |
| Lighting | E26 lamp holder |
| Noise | Described as low; no decibel figure stated |
| Weight / warranty | 11 pounds; 1-year manufacturer warranty |
COMFEE CVU30W2AST — 30-in slim convertible, 200 CFM, 2 speeds, ducted + carbon filters both included, E26 lamp, 1-yr
One of Two Listings That Include a Filter for Each Mode
Most convertible hoods include one filter and sell the other separately. This COMFEE and its black twin (CVU30W2ABB) are the only two listings that ship both a plain aluminum filter for ducted use and a carbon composite filter for recirculating use. For a condo owner waiting on HOA approval for a wall penetration, that means running ductless now and switching later without another order.
At 200 CFM it ties with its twin for the lowest stated rating on the shelf. That is fine for a small electric range and light cooking, and thin for a gas range. COMFEE recommends replacing the composite filter every 3 to 4 months, which is the real running cost of ductless mode.
Pros
- Both filters included
- Light and slim for small kitchens
- Easy future switch to ducted
Cons
- Lowest airflow rating on the shelf
- Composite filter needs regular replacement
- No noise figure or venting direction stated

How to size an under-cabinet hood
Width: match or exceed the range
The hood should be at least as wide as the cooking surface. A 30-inch range takes a 30-inch hood; a 36-inch range takes a 36-inch hood, and some cooks go one size wider for better capture at the front corners. Measure the cabinet opening as well: under-cabinet hoods mount to the cabinet bottom, and side panels or a valance can narrow the space.
Hood height and clearance above the cooktop
Every hood manual sets a minimum mounting height above the cooktop, and many also give a maximum beyond which capture drops off. Only one listing on this shelf (Broan’s non-ducted model) states a figure, at least 18 inches. Gas ranges often call for more clearance than electric. Follow the hood manual and the range manual, and use whichever minimum is greater. A slimmer body, like the 4.7-inch models above, leaves more room under a low cabinet.
CFM for your cooktop
Hood makers and installers commonly use two rules of thumb. For electric, about 100 CFM per linear foot of range width (roughly 250 to 300 CFM for a 30-inch range). For gas, about 100 CFM per 10,000 BTU of combined burner output. On this shelf, ratings run from 200 CFM to 1200 CFM, and six listings claim more than 400.
More CFM is not automatically better. A hood running well above what the duct can carry gets loud without moving much more air, and high-CFM hoods bring makeup-air requirements with them. For the bigger-picture comparison of wall chimney, insert and under-cabinet styles, see our best range hood guide, which covers a separate set of hoods.
Duct direction, duct size and ductless conversion
Top versus rear venting
Top (vertical) venting runs the duct up through the cabinet above, then through the ceiling, roof or an upper exterior wall. Rear (horizontal) venting goes straight out the wall behind the hood, which is the shortest path on an exterior wall. Six of the 15 listings state both options. If the hood is on an interior wall, top venting is usually the only ducted choice.
Match the existing duct
Older kitchens often have 3-1/4 x 10 inch rectangular duct; newer installs commonly use 6-inch or 7-inch round. Hauslane includes adapters for both shapes, and two VIKIO models include a rectangular adapter. Never neck down below the hood’s outlet. Our range hood ducting guide covers rigid versus flexible duct, elbows and exterior caps.
Ductless conversion
Convertible hoods recirculate air through a carbon filter and return it to the kitchen. That traps grease and some odor. It does not remove moisture, heat or the combustion gases a gas burner makes. The EPA names gas stoves as a source of indoor nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide and recommends an exhaust fan vented to the outdoors over gas stoves. On a gas range, treat ductless as a last resort. Carbon filters also wear out; replace them on the maker’s schedule, and clean or replace grease filters too. Our range hood filter guide covers cleaning intervals.
Makeup air, noise and power
Makeup air above 400 CFM
Many jurisdictions that adopt the International Residential Code require a makeup-air provision when kitchen exhaust exceeds 400 CFM. Thresholds and exceptions vary locally, so confirm with the building department. Without makeup air, a big hood in a tight house can pull combustion gases back down the flue of a furnace or water heater; the EPA lists that kind of back-drafting among indoor carbon monoxide sources.
Noise
None of the listings gives a sone rating, the loudness unit ENERGY STAR uses. Its ventilating fan criteria cap certified range hoods drawing 75 watts or less at 2.0 sones. Five of the 15 listings give decibels, typically 35 to 45 dB on low and 60 to 65 dB on high. Treat those as manufacturer claims, since the test conditions are not stated.
Plug-in versus hardwired
Five listings say they are hardwired or ship without a plug. A hardwired hood needs a proper junction box connection; Zomagas even notes that its package has no junction box. If the existing hood plugged into an outlet inside the cabinet, buy a hood with a plug or the maker’s cord kit.
Under-cabinet hoods in Front Range kitchens
Cold, windy winters along the Front Range make a working backdraft damper more than a nice extra. Without one, an exterior wall cap lets cold air spill back into the cabinet and down onto the cooktop. Check that the cap flap swings freely and that any in-line damper is installed in the right direction.
Many homes here pair a gas range with a gas furnace and water heater. If you are moving from a 200 CFM fan to a 750 or 900 CFM hood, think about the whole house, not just the kitchen: makeup air, a carbon monoxide alarm on every level and, for homes with radon mitigation, a quick word with the mitigation installer, because strong exhaust adds to basement depressurization.
Older Denver-area kitchens sometimes have a hood that was never ducted outdoors, with the duct ending in the cabinet, attic or soffit. That moves grease and moisture into hidden spaces. Replacing the hood is a good moment to confirm where the duct actually goes.
When DIY isn’t enough
Hanging a plug-in hood under a solid cabinet onto an existing duct is a reasonable DIY job. The cabinet bottom must be sound enough to hold the hood; our kitchen cabinets installation guide covers what proper mounting looks like. Bring in a licensed contractor or electrician for a new exterior penetration, a hardwired connection, a duct run through framing or a hood above 400 CFM that triggers makeup-air rules. Our range hood installation guide walks through those steps.
If you are buying a home and want the kitchen exhaust, gas appliances and venting checked by someone independent, contact us to connect with a vetted Front Range inspector.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best under cabinet range hood for most kitchens?
For most kitchens, a ducted 30-inch under-cabinet hood with a moderate airflow rating, baffle or good mesh filters and a damper is the best fit. A hood that stays under 400 CFM avoids makeup-air requirements in many jurisdictions. Match the duct outlet to the duct you already have.
How high should an under cabinet range hood be above the stove?
Follow the hood's installation manual, which sets a minimum and often a maximum height, and the range manual, using the greater minimum. Gas ranges often need more clearance than electric. Among the listings compared, only Broan states a figure, at least 18 inches above the cooktop.
Can an under cabinet range hood be ductless?
Yes, many under-cabinet hoods are convertible and recirculate air through a carbon filter. Some include the filter and others sell it separately. Recirculation traps grease and some odor but not moisture or combustion gases, so ducted venting is better for gas ranges.
Should an under cabinet range hood vent through the top or the back?
Rear venting is usually the shortest path when the range sits on an exterior wall. Top venting runs the duct through the cabinet above and is often the only option on an interior wall. Many hoods offer both, so choose based on where the duct can reach outdoors.
What size under cabinet range hood do I need?
Choose a hood at least as wide as the range, typically 30 inches for a 30-inch range and 36 inches for a 36-inch range. Some cooks go one size wider for better capture. For airflow, a rule of thumb is about 100 CFM per foot of width for electric ranges.
