Step 6: Kitchen and laundry appliances
Built-in appliances (range, oven, dishwasher, range hood, microwave) get a function test — burners ignited, oven turned to 350°F to confirm heating, dishwasher started in a short cycle, range hood fan and light operated. Laundry hookups are checked for shutoff valves, vent termination (no flexible plastic), and dryer-vent material. Free-standing appliances may be excluded depending on the inspector’s standards.

Step 7: HVAC, plumbing, and electrical
The furnace or boiler gets opened (within Standards-of-Practice limits — no dismantling), inspected for cracked heat exchangers via visible inspection or combustion-analyzer reading where applicable, age-dated by serial-number lookup, and run through a heating cycle. The air conditioner gets the same treatment in cooling mode if outside temperature allows safe operation (typically above 65°F for compressors). The water heater is age-dated, checked for proper TPR valve discharge piping, and inspected for combustion-air supply.
The electrical panel is the inspector’s most safety-sensitive stop.
