The best magnetic screen door is a cheap, renter-friendly fix that works well when it fits the frame and the magnets actually meet in the middle. These are fabric mesh curtains split down the center, with magnets sewn into the seam so the two halves snap back together after you walk through. They mount with hook-and-loop strips, need no drilling and come down in minutes at the end of summer. They also look temporary, can blow open in wind and wear out at the seams. This guide compares seven magnetic screens for standard doors, narrow doors, wide sliding and French doors and pet-heavy households, then covers sizing, installation and Front Range wind.

How we compared: we compared 13 current Amazon listings for magnetic mesh screen doors on what each listing states: screen size and fit size, magnet count, mesh material, mounting method, weighting and features such as keep-open snaps. We did not install or test any of these screens. Several listings are sizes or colors of the same screen. Prices and availability change often, so check the current listing before buying.

The Most Magnets and the Finest Stated Mesh on the Shelf

Five listings state a magnet count: Flux Phenom with 52, Okayavo with 48, Iduontis with 36 and two Mdavo sizes with 34 each. Flux has the most, and more magnets along the seam generally means fewer gaps where the two halves meet. It is also the only listing that gives a mesh hole size, 1 mm, which it says blocks small insects such as gnats.

The listing describes reinforced edges that resist strong gusts and a mesh without the vertical lines some screens use, which gives a cleaner view out. Installation uses a full hook-and-loop kit, so the whole perimeter is attached rather than a few strips.

Fit is the thing to check. The listing says it fits doors up to 38 by 82 inches, which reads as a maximum opening size; a smaller door means more overlap onto the trim. It also does not mention weights at the bottom, so it may flutter in a strong breeze compared with the weighted designs below.

Pros

  • 52 magnets for a tight seam
  • 1 mm mesh for small insects
  • Full-perimeter hook-and-loop mount

Cons

  • No bottom weights mentioned
  • Fit wording is a maximum, not exact
  • Black only in this listing

AUGO 43308-1708 — 38 x 83 in screen for 36 x 82 in doors, full-length magnets, keep-open snaps, polyester mesh

The Only Line With a Keep-Open Feature

Three AUGO sizes appear on the shelf (38 x 83, 38 x 81 and 34 x 81), and they are the only listings with snaps that hold the two halves aside. That matters during a barbecue or when carrying groceries in and out, because a magnetic screen otherwise closes on every pass and gets tugged off its mounts.

AUGO also explains sizing more clearly than most. Each listing gives both the screen size and the door size it fits, and tells you to measure the door, not the frame. The magnets are described as running the whole length of the seam rather than in spaced pairs, though the listing does not give a count.

Pros

  • Keep-open snaps
  • Clear sizing guidance
  • Push pins for extra hold

Cons

  • Magnet count not stated
  • No bottom weights mentioned
  • Push pins leave holes in trim

Okayavo OKA-74881 — 74 x 81 in for 72 x 80 in doors, 48 magnets, reversible side opening, 255 g/m² mesh, weighted

The Only Wide, Side-Opening Screen on the Shelf

Every other listing is a center-split screen for a single door. Okayavo is the only one sized for a wide opening, up to 72 by 80 inches, and the only one that opens from one side. That suits a sliding patio door, where you walk through the open half, and French doors where only one leaf is used daily. The opening side can be switched to match the door handle.

It is also one of two listings with built-in bottom weights (LONGEAS is the other), using four heavier gravity sticks to keep the screen from blowing open. The listing gives a mesh weight of 255 grams per square meter, compared with what it calls 134 g for ordinary mesh, the only numeric mesh weight on the shelf.

For a standard sliding patio door, measure carefully: many sliders are 72 inches wide overall, but the screen mounts across the whole frame, so check that the fit size matches your opening and leaves room for the strips.

Pros

  • Fits wide sliding and French doors
  • Weighted bottom for wind
  • Numeric mesh weight stated

Cons

  • Side opening is less hands-free than center split
  • Heavier, more strain on adhesive strips
  • Too wide for single doors

4. LONGEAS Magnetic Screen Door With PET Mesh (38 x 84 in) — Best for Dogs and Cats

Why we like it

  • PET mesh marketed against scratching and biting
  • Weighted bottom rod helps the seam close
  • Wider 1.6 in hook-and-loop strips
  • Free repair or replacement offered

Mesh PET, described as stronger than polyester and fiberglass

Service Free repair or replacement for lost parts or problems, per listing

LONGEAS — 38 x 84 in PET mesh magnetic screen, weighted bottom rod, 1.6 in hook-and-loop, pet-resistant

The Only Listing Built Around a PET Mesh for Pets

Most listings use polyester mesh. LONGEAS is the only magnetic screen that uses PET mesh and frames it specifically as resisting pet scratching and biting. Paired with a weighted rod at the bottom, the two halves fall back together after a dog barrels through, which is where unweighted screens tend to hang open.

The listing gives only the screen size, 38 by 84 inches, not the door size it fits. At 84 inches tall it is the longest single-door screen on the shelf alongside CANLENE, so it suits taller frames, but on an 80 inch door it will overlap more onto the trim or bunch at the floor. Measure before ordering.

Pros

  • PET mesh aimed at pets
  • Weighted bottom rod
  • Wide hook-and-loop strips

Cons

  • Door fit size not stated
  • Magnet count not stated
  • 84 in length may be long for 80 in doors

5. CANLENE Premium Magnetic Screen Door (38 x 84 in) — Best Anti-Sag Top Header

Why we like it

  • Reinforced 4 cm top header resists sagging
  • Ultra-dense weave for small insects
  • Strengthened stitching described
  • Smooth top-to-bottom auto close
Specification Details
Screen size 38 x 84 in; door fit size not stated
Top header Reinforced 4 cm panel
Mesh Ultra-fine, ultra-dense weave
Closure High-precision magnets; count not stated
Mounting Not described in detail

CANLENE — 38 x 84 in, reinforced 4 cm top panel, ultra-dense mesh, strengthened stitching, magnetic auto close

The Only Listing That Focuses on the Top Header

Magnetic screens usually fail at the top: the heavy mesh pulls the header away from the frame, or the fabric tears where it hangs from the strip. CANLENE is the only listing that addresses that directly, with a reinforced 4 cm top panel it says prevents dropping, sagging and tearing. Okayavo mentions a reinforced line at the top middle, but CANLENE builds its pitch around the header.

The listing is vague elsewhere. It does not give a magnet count, the door size it fits or the mounting method in detail. Like LONGEAS, it is 84 inches tall.

Pros

  • Reinforced top header
  • Dense weave
  • Strengthened stitching

Cons

  • Door fit size not stated
  • Mounting details missing
  • Marketing language over specifics

6. AUGO Magnetic Screen Door (34 x 81 in, Fits 32 x 80 in) — Best for Narrow Doors

  • Only listing sized for 32 in wide doors
  • Same keep-open snaps as the larger AUGO
  • Full-length magnets along the seam
  • Push pins for extra hold
Specification Details
Screen / fit size Screen 34 x 81 in; fits 32 x 80 in doors
Magnets Full length of seam; count not stated
Mesh Polyester
Mounting Full-frame hook-and-loop plus push pins
Feature / weight Keep-open snaps; 1.41 lb

AUGO MESH-SD-81 — 34 x 81 in screen for 32 x 80 in doors, full-length magnets, keep-open snaps, polyester mesh

The Only Screen on the Shelf for a 32 Inch Door

Most listings target 36 inch doors, and a few go to 38. Back doors, side doors to a garage or yard, and older homes often have 32 inch doors, where a 38 inch screen bunches and leaves the seam off center. This AUGO is the only listing sized for a 32 by 80 inch door, so the seam lands in the middle and the magnets meet properly.

It shares the larger AUGO’s keep-open snaps and full-length magnets, so the only trade-off is size. Measure the door itself, not the frame, as AUGO advises.

Pros

  • Right size for 32 in doors
  • Keep-open snaps
  • Centered seam on narrow doors

Cons

  • Magnet count not stated
  • No bottom weights
  • Push pins mark the trim

  • Rolls up for off-season storage
Specification Details
Screen / fit size Screen 38 x 82 in; fits 36 x 80 in doors
Mesh Heavy-duty polyester with reinforced edges
Mounting Included attachment strips
Warranty Lifetime warranty, per listing
Weight / colors About 0.88 lb; white (black version also listed)

METAONLY — 38 x 82 in white polyester screen for 36 x 80 in doors, reinforced edges, lifetime warranty, 0.88 lb

The Only White Screen and One of Two With a Lifetime Warranty

Nearly every magnetic screen on the shelf is black, which reads as less visible from inside. On a white storm door frame or white trim, though, a black rectangle can stand out from the street. This METAONLY listing is the only white option, and it and its black twin are the only listings that state a lifetime warranty.

It fits the most common door size on the shelf, 36 by 80 inches, which five listings target. The listing does not give a magnet count and does not describe weights. White mesh also shows dirt and pollen faster than black.

Pros

  • Only white option
  • Lifetime warranty stated
  • Lightest stated weight among the picks

Cons

  • Magnet count not stated
  • Shows dirt faster
  • No weights for wind

How to size a magnetic screen door

Sizing causes more disappointment than any other issue with magnetic screens. Listings mix three numbers: the screen size, the door size it fits and the maximum opening. Here is how to read them.

  1. Measure the door opening, not the frame. Measure inside the jamb, side to side and top to threshold. AUGO, Mdavo and METAONLY all say to exclude the frame.
  2. Compare with the fit size. A screen is typically about 2 inches wider and 1 to 2 inches taller than the door it fits, so the hook-and-loop strips land on the trim.
  3. Check the trim width. You need a flat surface around the opening for the strips. Narrow or profiled trim may need a flat strip of wood added first.
  4. Do not oversize by much. A screen that is too wide bunches and moves the seam off center; too long and it drags on the threshold.

On this shelf, five listings fit 36 x 80 inch doors, two fit 36 x 82, one fits 32 x 80 and one fits openings up to 72 x 80. Two give a maximum door size of 38 x 82, and two list only a screen size.

Installing for a tight seal that lasts

  • Clean the trim. Wipe dust and grease from the frame with rubbing alcohol before applying adhesive strips, and let it dry.
  • Start at the top center. Line up the seam with the middle of the door, then work outward and down. A centered seam is what lets the magnets meet.
  • Give adhesive time. Many strips bond best if left 24 hours before the screen gets heavy use.
  • Use push pins or tacks where provided. AUGO and Okayavo include them; they keep the top from peeling when the screen is pulled.
  • Check the magnets. Some screens ship with magnets loose for you to insert. Make sure every pocket is closed and aligned so each pair meets.

Magnetic versus retractable screen doors

Magnetic screens cost a fraction of a retractable screen and install in minutes without tools, which makes them the default for renters and for doors used only in summer. They close themselves, which is ideal for kids and pets going in and out.

Retractable screens roll into a cassette when not in use, look more finished and handle wind better, but cost more and require drilling and careful measuring. If you want a permanent, cleaner look, see our retractable screen door guide. Neither type is a security device; for that, a security screen door is the right category. For more on magnetic options, see our main magnetic screen door guide.

Bugs, ventilation and indoor air

The CDC’s mosquito prevention guidance recommends using screens on windows and doors and repairing holes in screens to keep mosquitoes outdoors. A magnetic screen is an easy way to follow that advice on a door you want open during summer evenings. The EPA notes that opening windows and doors, when weather permits, increases the amount of outdoor air coming indoors and can help lower indoor pollutant levels.

Mesh density is a trade-off. Finer mesh, such as the 1 mm weave Flux states, blocks smaller insects but slightly reduces airflow and visibility. If gnats and no-see-ums are your main complaint, finer is better. If you mostly want a breeze with flies kept out, standard mesh is fine.

Safety: magnets, kids and pets

The magnets in these screens are sewn into fabric pockets along the seam. The CPSC warns that high-powered magnets are a serious safety risk to children, from toddlers to teens, and that when two or more magnets are swallowed they can attract each other inside the body, leading to surgery. The listings do not state what type of magnets they use, but the practical rule is the same: inspect the seam regularly, and if a pocket tears or a magnet comes loose, remove it immediately and repair or replace the screen. Keep spare magnets that ship with some screens out of reach of children.

For pets, weighted bottoms (Okayavo and LONGEAS) help the screen close after a dog pushes through, and tougher mesh such as PET resists claws. Young pets may still tear any fabric screen; train them to use it slowly.

Front Range wind, sun and season

  • Wind. Gusty downslope winds can pull a magnetic screen open or peel strips off the trim. Weighted screens hold better; on very windy days, roll the screen up or close the door.
  • Sun. Strong sun at altitude fades and weakens polyester mesh and adhesive. A west-facing door may need a new screen every season or two.
  • Dry air and cold. Adhesive strips can let go in dry winter air. Most homeowners take magnetic screens down in fall, wash them and store them rolled.
  • Smoke days. A screen does not filter wildfire smoke; close the door when air quality is poor.

When the door frame is the real problem

If a magnetic screen never closes evenly no matter how you mount it, the frame may be out of square, which can point to a settling header or a door that needs adjustment. The ASHI Standard of Practice includes exterior doors in a standard home inspection, and our structure and exterior inspection guide explains what an inspector checks. For worn hinged screens, our screen door repair guide walks through common fixes. If you are buying on the Front Range and want doors and frames looked at, reach out to connect with a vetted local inspector.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best magnetic screen door?

Look for a screen sized for your exact door, a high magnet count or full-length magnets along the seam, reinforced edges and a full hook-and-loop mount. Weighted bottoms help in wind and with pets. Fit matters most, because an oversized screen moves the seam off center and gaps open.

How do I measure for a magnetic screen door?

Measure the door opening inside the frame, width and height, and order the screen whose listed fit size matches. Screens are usually about 2 inches wider and slightly taller than the door they fit so the mounting strips land on the trim.

Do magnetic screen doors work on sliding doors?

Yes. Many center-split screens work on single sliding doors, and wide side-opening versions fit openings up to about 72 inches for full sliding or French doors. Make sure there is flat trim around the opening for the hook-and-loop strips.

Are magnetic screen doors safe for kids and pets?

They are designed for hands-free passage by kids and pets. CPSC warns that swallowed high-powered magnets can cause serious injuries, so check the seam pockets regularly and remove any loose magnet. Weighted bottoms and tougher mesh help with dogs.

Why does my magnetic screen door not close all the way?

The most common causes are a screen that is too wide, a seam that is not centered, a door frame that is out of square or magnets that are misaligned in their pockets. Remount from the top center, and add weight at the bottom if wind or pets keep it open.
