The initial certificate program teaches the general residential inspection. From there, working inspectors expand their offerings through specialty courses. Each specialty translates into a separate line-item fee on the inspection invoice — $100-$400 per add-on service — which often pays back the course tuition within 5-15 paid inspections. The modular nature of these courses lets inspectors build their service menu incrementally rather than committing upfront to specialties they may not need.

ASHI requires 20 continuing-education hours per year for certified members; InterNACHI requires 24 hours. Single courses are the primary way working inspectors satisfy these requirements. The CEU credit and the specialty credential often come together in the same course enrollment.

Common Specialty Courses and Their Place in a Practice

Radon Measurement Certification

The most-purchased specialty in the home-inspection field. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends that radon testing be conducted by certified measurement professionals when results inform real-estate transactions. Two main certification bodies exist: the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) and the National Radon Safety Board (NRSB). Pool and Spa Inspection

Optional specialty covering pool structure, equipment (pumps, filters, heaters), and safety features. Course tuition runs $200-$500. Per-inspection add-on revenue: $75-$200, with seasonal demand peaking in spring and summer.

Well and Septic Inspection

Specialty covering private water systems, septic tanks, leach fields, and observable defects. Course tuition runs $300-$700. Less common on the urban Front Range but valuable for inspectors serving Elbert County, parts of Douglas County, and rural areas. Per-inspection add-on revenue: $100-$300.

Wood-Destroying Organism (WDO) Inspection

Termite, carpenter ant, and decay-fungus inspection. Course tuition runs $200-$500. Less critical in arid Colorado than in humid Southeast markets but still useful as a credential.

Trade-Association Chapters

The cheapest source. ASHI Colorado and InterNACHI Rocky Mountain chapter event calendars include monthly or quarterly single-topic courses. Typically $25-$200 per session, with continuing-education credit.

National Online Providers

InterNACHI’s online course catalog includes more than a hundred individual specialty and topic courses ranging from free to several hundred dollars. ASHI partner schools and several independent online providers offer similar catalogs.

Equipment Manufacturers

Some equipment manufacturers (sewer-scope cameras, thermal imagers, moisture meters, radon CRMs) offer free or low-cost training on their products. These are equipment-specific and not substitutes for underlying methodology courses, but they are valuable supplements.

Private Inspection Schools

Some private schools offer individual course modules from their full certificate programs as standalone purchases. Typically priced higher per hour than chapter events but with more in-person field time. Sequencing Specialty Courses in a Career

Most working inspectors add specialty courses in roughly this sequence over their first three to five years of practice:

Year One

Focus on general inspection mastery. Add radon certification early because it generates immediate add-on revenue with strong demand. Roughly $400-$700 tuition + $700-$2,500 equipment.

Year Two

Add thermal imaging certification once general inspection workflow is stable. Imager equipment investment is significant but the credential and tool combine for several add-on revenue lines (energy audits, moisture diagnostics, electrical scans). Roughly $400-$1,200 tuition + $800-$3,000 equipment.

Year Three

Add mold inspection or sewer-scope based on local market demand. On the Front Range, sewer-scope often returns faster than mold because older neighborhoods have aging sewer infrastructure. Roughly $300-$1,500 tuition + $500-$1,500 equipment.

Year Four and Beyond

Continue topic-deep continuing education annually to maintain certification. Optionally add pool/spa, well/septic, or WDO specialties as market opportunities arise.

Mixed Online and In-Person Specialty Course Formats

Specialty courses have largely shifted to hybrid formats, with online theory and exam preparation paired with a 1-3 day in-person field practicum. The radon-measurement certification courses typically deliver 12-16 hours of online theory followed by a 4-8 hour proctored exam and a 4-hour equipment-handling session. Thermal-imaging courses pair online physics and image-interpretation modules with an in-person inspection of a real building. Mold-inspection courses combine online theory with a hands-on sampling-protocol session. The hybrid format has emerged as the dominant model because it balances flexibility with the hands-on component that pure online cannot provide.

Continuing-Education Hours Per Course Type

Different course formats award different numbers of continuing-education hours, which affects how working inspectors budget their CEU portfolio. A typical specialty certification course awards 12-24 CEU hours. A half-day continuing-education workshop awards 3-4 hours. A full-day chapter event awards 6-8 hours. An online webinar series awards 1-3 hours per session. Annual CEU requirements (24 hours for InterNACHI, 20 hours for ASHI) can be met by 2-3 longer courses or 6-8 shorter sessions. How to Vet a Single Course Before Enrolling

Confirm specialty credential portability — if the course leads to a specialty credential (radon, mold, thermal), verify the credentialing body is recognized in the relevant market. Confirm equipment requirements — some specialty courses presume the student already owns specific equipment, and tuition does not cover the gear.

What Single Courses Cannot Replace

A single course is not a substitute for the underlying initial home-inspection certificate program. Specialty courses presume the candidate already understands general residential inspection methodology, the standards of practice, and report writing. A radon course teaches radon measurement, not the full inspection scope. The right way to use single courses is as additions to an existing credential base, not as a shortcut around the initial certification program. Some specialty credentials require periodic recertification through additional courses. Radon measurement certifications typically require continuing education hours every two years to maintain active certification — usually 8-16 hours of approved courses. An inspector who wants to add radon testing to their service menu may need to provide certificate of NRPP or NRSB certification before the E&O carrier will extend coverage to radon-related claims. For radon, NRPP and NRSB are both recognized; choose whichever has stronger active member presence on the Front Range, currently a close split between the two. For thermal imaging, InterNACHI Infrared Certified is the most-marketed credential, with ASNT Level I/II as a more rigorous alternative for inspectors planning to specialize in commercial thermography. For mold, several private certifications exist; the credentialing body matters less than the depth of the curriculum and the strength of the lab-partnership component.

Course Material That Pays Back Beyond the Credential

The technical knowledge from a specialty course often produces value beyond the credential itself.
