The best jigsaw is the saw homeowners reach for when a cut isn’t straight: a curve in a shelf bracket, a cutout for a sink or a floor register, a notch in a deck board around a post, or a patch in damaged subfloor. Jigsaws are compact, relatively forgiving and cheap compared with other power saws, but they vary in how cleanly they track a line, how fast they cut thick stock and how much vibration they pass to your hands. Below are seven picks from the corded and cordless listings on the shelf, each matched to a job, followed by a buying guide on reading jigsaw specs, picking blades, working safely and recognizing when the cut you’re about to make is really a repair that needs a pro.

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

How we compared: we compared 9 current Amazon listings for handheld jigsaws (the same search also returned jigsaw puzzles and a supplement, which we ignored) on what each listing actually states: motor amps or platform, strokes per minute, orbital settings, bevel range, blade-change system, lights and guides, dust handling, included accessories, weight and warranty. We did not lab-test or handle any of these saws. Prices and availability change often, so check the current listing before buying.

The 7 picks, compared listing by listing

1. SKIL JS314901 — Best Overall Corded Jigsaw

Best overallSKIL JS314901

6-amp corded jigsaw with 4-stage orbital action, tool-free bevel and blade change, dust-blower switch and halo light.

  • Dust blower you can switch on or off
  • Halo LED light around the blade
  • Two-finger trigger for control
Specification Details
Motor 6 amp, corded
Orbital action 4-stage

Visibility Halo LED (claimed 10x a standard LED); on/off dust blower
Weight / warranty About 4.9 lb; 1-year limited

SKIL JS314901 — 6 A corded, 4-stage orbital, tool-free bevel + blade clamp, halo LED, switchable dust blower, 4.9 lb, 1-yr

The Only Listing That Pairs a Tool-Free Bevel With a Switchable Dust Blower

Eight of the nine listings describe tool-free blade changes, so that is table stakes. What sets the SKIL apart is the rest of the convenience package. It is the only listing that describes a dust blower you can turn on and off; the others that mention a blower (BLACK+DECKER, DEWALT, WEN and the 6.7-amp DEKOPRO) don’t describe a way to switch it off. Turning it off helps when you’re cutting near a fresh finish or don’t want dust blown across the room. It also adjusts bevel without a tool, which only a few listings make explicit.

It is one of four listings with a work light, and its halo design surrounds the blade to cut shadows. Its 6-amp motor is mid-pack, below the 6.7-amp DEKOPRO and 6.6-amp WEN but above the rest.

Gaps: the listing gives no strokes-per-minute figure and no bevel range. Its one-year warranty is the shortest of the four listings that state a warranty.

Pros

  • Switchable dust blower
  • Tool-free bevel and blade clamp
  • Halo LED and 4-stage orbital

Cons

  • SPM and bevel range not stated
  • One-year warranty
  • No dust-port size given

Blade / extras T-shank, lever-action keyless change; LED; dust blower; no-mar shoe cover
Weight About 4.2 lb (bare tool)

DEWALT DCS334B — 20V MAX XR brushless, 3,200 SPM, 4-position orbital, metal keyless bevel 0-45, LED, no-mar shoe, 4.2 lb bare

The Only Cordless Option and the Only Listing With a No-Mar Shoe Cover Plus Speed Dial

The DCS334B is the only battery jigsaw among the nine, which matters for cutouts in a finished room, work on a deck away from outlets or anywhere a cord would drag across a finished surface. It combines a variable-speed trigger with a separate speed dial so you can cap top speed for metal or laminate. WEN also includes a non-marring shoe, but the DEWALT pairs it with a metal bevel mechanism that has set points at 0, 15, 30 and 45 degrees.

Its 3,200 SPM is the second-highest stated speed, behind WEN’s 3,300. It is also one of only two listings that say they accept T-shank blades (with Hammerhead), which is now the most common blade style.

Trade-offs: it is tool only, so a battery and charger are extra if you’re not already on the DEWALT platform. No warranty term is listed. If you’re choosing a battery platform, our best cordless drill roundup is a good place to start.

Pros

  • Cordless and brushless
  • 3,200 SPM with speed dial
  • Metal bevel with set points; no-mar shoe

Cons

  • Battery and charger sold separately
  • Warranty not stated in listing
  • Platform lock-in to DEWALT 20V

Dust 1-1/2 in dust port or front dust blower
Included Lock-on trigger, beveling footplate, non-marring shoe, wood and metal blades, parallel fence bracket
Weight / warranty About 5.4 lb; 2 years

WEN 33606 — 6.6 A corded, 0-3,300 SPM, 4-position orbital, laser + LED, 1-1/2 in dust port, non-marring shoe, 2-yr

The Only Laser Guide and the Highest Stated Stroke Rate

Four listings include a work light, but WEN is the only one that adds a laser to mark the line of cut. For homeowners who struggle to see a pencil line through the blade and dust, a laser plus LED is a real help on long, gentle curves. Its 3,300 SPM is the highest stated speed on the shelf.

WEN is also the only listing that gives a dust-port size (1-1/2 inch), so you know whether your shop-vac hose will fit with a common adapter. Five listings mention a vacuum-ready port; the rest leave the size to the manual.

Drawbacks: at about 5.4 lb it is the heaviest corded pick, and the listing doesn’t describe a tool-free blade change or the blade shank type. Lasers can drift and may need adjustment over time.

Pros

  • Laser and LED line guides
  • 3,300 SPM top speed
  • Stated dust-port size; 2-year warranty

Cons

  • Heaviest corded pick
  • Blade change type not described
  • Laser may need calibration

4. DEKOPRO DKPJGSD075C1 — Most Powerful Corded Jigsaw

Most powerful cordedDEKOPRO 6.7 amp

6.7-amp corded jigsaw with 4 orbital settings, LED, dust blower, 0-45 degree bevel and a 10-blade kit.

Check price on Amazon$39.99 as of Oct 20, 2026 5:05 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price.

Why we like it

  • Highest stated amperage, 6.7 amps
  • Largest stated wood capacity, 100 mm
  • Ten blades for wood, metal and plastic
  • LED plus dust blower
Specification Details
Motor / speed 6.7 amp, corded; 6 speeds, up to 3,000 SPM
Orbital 4 settings
Capacity (stated) Wood/board 100 mm; metal 6 mm
Bevel Metal base, 0-15-30-45 degrees
Included 6 wood, 2 metal, 2 plastic blades; guide ruler; dust-blowing adapter; carbon brushes
Weight / warranty Not stated in listing

DEKOPRO 6.7 A — corded, 6 speeds to 3,000 SPM, 4 orbital, 100 mm wood / 6 mm metal stated, LED, 10 blades

The Highest Stated Amperage and Cutting Capacity

Six listings give a motor amperage: DEKOPRO’s 6.7 amps is the highest, edging out WEN at 6.6 and SKIL at 6. Three listings state a cutting capacity, and this DEKOPRO claims the most: 100 mm in wood, compared with 65 mm for Winmitool and 55 mm for DEKOPRO’s own smaller kit. More power and capacity help with thick hardwood, doubled 2x stock and landscape timbers.

It also comes with the most blades of any pick (ten, across wood, metal and plastic), a guide ruler and spare carbon brushes, so it’s ready for most household jobs out of the box.

The capacity figure is a manufacturer maximum; a jigsaw blade long enough for 100 mm will wander in a thick cut. The listing gives no weight, warranty or blade shank type.

Pros

  • 6.7-amp motor
  • Largest stated wood capacity
  • Ten blades, LED and dust blower

Cons

  • Weight and warranty not stated
  • Max-capacity claim is optimistic for clean cuts
  • Less-established brand support

5. BLACK+DECKER BDEJS300C — Best Light-Duty Budget Jigsaw

Best light-duty budget pickBLACK+DECKER BDEJS300C

Compact 4.5-amp corded jigsaw: up to 3,000 SPM, 3/4-in stroke, Wire Guard sightline, tool-free clamp, 2-yr warranty.

Check price on Amazon$41.98 as of Oct 20, 2026 5:05 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price.

Why we like it

  • Wire Guard sightline keeps the line visible
  • Compact and designed for low vibration
  • Tool-free Quick-Clamp blade change
  • Two-year limited warranty
Specification Details
Motor / speed 4.5 amp, corded; variable speed up to 3,000 SPM
Stroke 3/4 in
Orbital Not stated in listing
Bevel Base plate tilts up to 45 degrees
Visibility Wire Guard sightline channel; built-in dust blower
Weight / warranty About 4.4 lb; 2-year limited

BLACK+DECKER BDEJS300C — 4.5 A corded, 3,000 SPM, 3/4 in stroke, bevel to 45, Wire Guard, dust blower, 4.4 lb, 2-yr

The Only Listing With a Wire-Guard Sightline Instead of a Solid Guard

BLACK+DECKER’s Wire Guard is unique on the shelf: a wire blade guard with an open sightline channel. OSHA’s jigsaw guidance stresses guarding the blade, and this design keeps a guard in place without blocking your view of the line, which helps beginners follow a cut without tilting their head over the saw.

It’s a light-duty tool: its 4.5-amp motor is the lowest of the six listings that state amps, and it is one of two listings (with DEKOPRO’s 8-blade kit) that don’t mention orbital action. That’s fine for 3/4-inch plywood, shelving, thin paneling and craft work, less so for thick hardwood. Its 3/4-inch stroke matches Hammerhead’s, the only other listing that states stroke length.

Not stated: dust-port connection, light and blade shank type. Its two-year warranty ties Hammerhead and WEN.

Pros

  • Guarded blade with clear sightline
  • Compact, low-vibration design
  • Two-year warranty

Cons

  • Lowest-amp motor among listings that state it
  • No orbital action mentioned
  • No work light

6. Winmitool JSC-001 — Best Jigsaw Starter Kit

Best starter kitWinmitool JSC-001

5.5-amp corded jigsaw kit with 6 speeds, 4 orbital modes, mode-lock button, goggles, gloves, blades and a carry case.

Check price on Amazon$34.99 as of Oct 20, 2026 5:05 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price.

Why we like it

  • Only kit that includes safety goggles
  • Mode lock prevents accidental setting changes
  • Hard carrying case included
  • Lightest listed weight, about 3.1 lb
Specification Details
Motor / speed 5.5 amp, corded; 6 speeds up to 3,000 SPM
Orbital / bevel 4 orbital modes; metal base 0-15-30-45 degrees
Capacity (stated) Wood 65 mm; metal 6 mm
Controls Mode lock button; tool-free blade change
Included 4 blades, scale ruler, safety goggles, gloves, Allen wrench, carrying case; rear dust port
Weight / warranty About 3.1 lb; warranty not stated

Winmitool JSC-001 — 5.5 A corded, 6 speeds to 3,000 SPM, 4 orbital, 65 mm wood, mode lock, goggles + gloves + case, 3.1 lb

The Only Kit That Ships With Eye Protection and a Mode Lock

A first jigsaw often goes to someone who doesn’t yet own safety glasses. Winmitool is the only one of the nine listings that puts goggles in the box, and the only one with a carrying case. Its mode-lock button is also unique; it keeps the speed and orbital settings from being bumped mid-cut, which is a small but useful touch for beginners.

At about 3.1 lb it has the lowest believable listed weight on the shelf, which reduces fatigue on overhead or awkward cuts. It adds a rear dust port and states a 65 mm wood capacity.

The drawbacks: no warranty term, no work light and a lesser-known brand. Note the included gloves: wear close-fitting gloves only if the manual allows, since loose gloves near any blade are a snag hazard.

Pros

  • Goggles, gloves and case included
  • Mode lock and 4 orbital modes
  • Very light

Cons

  • Warranty not stated in listing
  • No work light
  • Only four blades included

Check price on Amazon$26.25 as of Oct 20, 2026 5:05 pm GMT+0000 — prices change; see Amazon for current price.

Why we like it

  • Only listing that names a brake function
  • 4-stage orbital for fast or smooth cuts
  • Accepts T-shank blades, tool-free
  • Vacuum-ready dust tube
Specification Details
Motor / speed 4.8 amp, corded; variable, up to 3,000 SPM
Stroke / orbital 3/4 in stroke; 4-stage orbital
Brake Brake function stated
Bevel Metal base plate to 45 degrees
Blade / dust Tool-free T-shank change; dust tube for vacuum; 2 wood blades included
Warranty 2-year limited; weight not stated

Hammerhead HAJS048 — 4.8 A corded, 3,000 SPM, 3/4 in stroke, 4-stage orbital, brake, T-shank, metal bevel, 2-yr

The Only Listing With a Brake to Stop the Blade

Hammerhead is the only one of the nine listings that mentions a brake, which stops the blade quickly when you release the trigger. That’s useful for precise stops at the end of a cut and means the blade isn’t still moving as you lift the saw out of a cutout.

It also covers the fundamentals: 4-stage orbital (seven of nine listings offer orbital action), T-shank tool-free blade changes (only it and the DEWALT name the shank type), a metal bevel base and a vacuum-ready dust tube. Its two-year warranty is among the longest stated.

Limits: 4.8 amps is on the low side, there’s no work light and the listing gives no weight. Only two blades are included.

Pros

  • Blade brake
  • 4-stage orbital and T-shank
  • Two-year warranty

Cons

  • Lower-amp motor
  • No work light
  • Weight not stated in listing

How to read jigsaw specs

Amps, platform and SPM

Corded jigsaw power is rated in amps; 5 to 7 amps handles most household cutting. Cordless saws are rated by platform voltage. Strokes per minute (SPM) is top blade speed; 3,000 is typical. Use lower speeds for metal, plastics and laminates and higher speeds for wood.

Orbital action

Orbital action swings the blade slightly forward on the upstroke, cutting faster in softwood and plywood at the cost of a rougher edge. Turn it off (setting 0) for metal, tight curves and clean finish cuts. Seven of nine listings here offer it.

Bevel and base

Most jigsaws bevel up to 45 degrees. Metal bases with set points (0, 15, 30, 45 degrees) are easier to return to square than a free-tilting shoe. A non-marring shoe cover protects finished surfaces.

Blade system

T-shank blades are the most common style and work with tool-free clamps. Blade choice changes results more than the saw does: fine-tooth blades for laminate and trim, coarse blades for fast cuts in framing lumber, bi-metal blades for metal, and down-cut (reverse-tooth) blades to reduce splintering on the top face of countertops and finished panels.

Lights, lasers and dust control

A light around the blade and a dust blower or vacuum port help you see the line, which is half of cut quality. Lasers help some users on long curves.

Jigsaw safety

OSHA’s woodworking guidance notes that handheld jigsaws generally are not considered as dangerous as other saws, but contact at the point of operation can still cause hand and finger injuries, and contact can also occur below the stock being cut. It recommends guarding the blade with an adjustable or self-adjusting guard, making turns slowly and using a narrow blade for sharp turns.

  • Watch below the cut. The blade extends under the workpiece. Check for wires, pipes and your own fingers and clamps before cutting, especially in walls, floors and cabinets.
  • Clamp the work. OSHA’s hand and power tools guidance says to secure work with clamps or a vise so both hands are free to operate the tool.
  • Unplug before blade changes. Disconnect corded tools, or remove the battery, before changing blades.
  • Eyes, ears and lungs. Wear eye protection. NIOSH considers noise at or above 85 dBA hazardous. OSHA links wood dust to dermatitis and respiratory effects, so use a vacuum or dust mask when cutting indoors.
  • Old painted materials. The EPA notes that renovation in a pre-1978 home with lead-based paint can easily create dangerous lead dust. Cutting through old painted trim, cabinets or paneling qualifies; test first or follow lead-safe practices.

How Front Range homeowners use a jigsaw

  • Subfloor patches: Cutting out a water-damaged section of subfloor around a toilet or under an old leak. Set the blade depth by choosing a blade just longer than the subfloor and confirm what’s underneath. See our subfloor repair guide before you start.
  • Deck work: Notching deck boards around posts and cutting curved deck skirting panels. Straight rips are better done with a saw from our best circular saw roundup or our sibling best table saw roundup.
  • Trim: Coping inside corners on baseboard with a fine blade; the angle cuts themselves come from a saw in our best miter saw roundup.
  • Cutouts in place: For flush cuts and openings in installed drywall or trim, an oscillating tool is often safer and cleaner; see our best oscillating tool roundup.
  • Dry winter wood: Low Colorado humidity makes some woods brittle and prone to splintering. A fine-tooth, down-cut blade and orbital off give cleaner edges on veneered plywood.

When the cut is really a repair: call a pro

Jigsaws make it easy to open things up, which is exactly when hidden problems show themselves. If cutting out subfloor reveals soft joists, mold or an active leak, or a deck notch exposes rot in a post or rim joist, stop and have the structure evaluated before patching over it. Our structure and exterior inspection guide explains what an inspector checks. If you’re in the middle of a purchase, contact us to connect with a vetted Front Range inspector.

Frequently asked questions

Is a corded or cordless jigsaw better?

Corded jigsaws give unlimited runtime and usually more power for the money, which suits occasional household use. Cordless jigsaws are more convenient for cutouts in finished rooms and work away from outlets, but they tie you to one battery platform. If you already own a 20V tool system, a bare cordless saw is a good value.

What does orbital action do on a jigsaw?

Orbital action moves the blade forward slightly on each upstroke, so it cuts faster in wood and plywood. The trade-off is a rougher edge and more splintering. Turn orbital action off for metal, tight curves, laminate and any cut where the edge will show.

Can a jigsaw make straight cuts?

Yes, with a straight-edge guide or the included parallel fence, but a jigsaw blade can deflect on long or thick cuts. For long straight rips in plywood or lumber, a circular saw or table saw is faster and more accurate. Use the jigsaw for curves, notches and cutouts.

What jigsaw blade should I use for laminate countertops?

Use a fine-tooth, down-cut (reverse-tooth) blade so the teeth cut on the downstroke and reduce chipping on the visible top surface. Turn off orbital action, use a moderate speed and tape the cut line. Always check the countertop maker's cutting recommendations.

How many amps should a jigsaw have?

For household cutting in plywood, shelving and 2x lumber, 5 to 7 amps is plenty. Lower-amp saws around 4.5 amps work for thin stock and crafts. Blade choice, orbital setting and speed affect results as much as motor power does.
