The best dimmable LED bulbs are the ones that behave on your dimmer. Most “dimmable” bulbs dim, but some flicker at low settings, buzz, drop out before the slider reaches the bottom or refuse to work on a three-way switch. Which bulb works best depends on the dimmer on your wall, the fixture the bulb goes into and how much light the room needs. This roundup compares seven current listings on what they state about dimming range, dimmer compatibility, brightness, color quality and ratings, then explains how to pair bulbs with dimmers so the lights fade smoothly.

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

How we compared: we compared 17 current Amazon listings for dimmable A19, A21 and filament-style LED bulbs with standard E26 bases, on what each listing states: lumens, wattage, color temperature, color rendering (CRI), dimming range, dimmer compatibility notes, enclosed-fixture and damp ratings, safety listings and warranty. Several listings are multipacks of the same bulb, so the 17 listings cover fewer distinct models. We set aside one listing in the search results because it is labeled non-dimmable. We did not lab-test these bulbs or try them on dimmers ourselves. Prices and availability change, so check the current listing before buying.

Feit OM60DM/927CA — A19, 800 lm, 8.8W, 2700K, 90 CRI, ENERGY STAR named, frosted, E26, 3-yr warranty

One of Only Two Listings That Name ENERGY STAR, and One of Three With 90 CRI

Of the 17 dimmable listings we compared, only this Feit and the LUXRITE A19 mention ENERGY STAR, and only three (this bulb, the Feit 5CCT A19 and a GOZIG 100W-equivalent) state a CRI of 90 or higher. Most of the rest state CRI 80 or say nothing. Higher CRI means colors under the bulb look closer to how they look in daylight, which shows in skin tones, wood floors and food.

The bulb itself is plain: frosted A19 glass, warm 2700K light and 800 lumens, which is exactly the output ENERGY STAR’s brightness chart pairs with an old 60-watt incandescent. The three-year warranty is longer than every other listing on the shelf except the GE Relax at five years.

What the listing leaves out is dimming detail. It says the bulb is dimmable but gives no low-end percentage, no list of tested dimmers and no flicker statement, and it does not say whether the bulb is rated for fully enclosed fixtures. Check Feit’s dimmer compatibility information before buying a large quantity for a room on an older dimmer.

Pros

  • ENERGY STAR and 90 CRI both named
  • Efficient 8.8 watts for 800 lumens
  • Three-year warranty

Cons

  • No dimming range or tested-dimmer list
  • Enclosed-fixture rating not stated
  • Single fixed color temperature

  • Damp rated for bathrooms and covered porches
  • States no buzzing, flickering or stepping
Specification Details
Output / power 800 lumens; 8.8 watts

Feit OM60DM/5CCTCA — A19, 800 lm, 8.8W, 5CCT 2700–5000K switch, 90+ CRI, damp rated, 270° beam, E26, 3-yr warranty

One of Only Two Bulbs Here With Selectable Color Temperature

Every other dimmable listing on the shelf ships in a single fixed color, so if 5000K turns out to look harsh in a bedroom you are stuck with it. The two Feit 5CCT listings, this A19 and the brighter A21 below, put a small switch on the base that cycles through five settings from warm 2700K to daylight 5000K. That makes this bulb a low-risk choice when you are not sure which color suits a room, or when one fixture serves a kitchen by day and a dining table at night.

It is also one of only two listings on the shelf that say they are damp rated (the other is the A21 sibling), which matters in a bathroom fixture or a covered entry. The listing claims compatibility with most standard LED dimmers and smooth dimming with no buzzing or stepping at any level.

Two cautions. The color switch is set before installation, so a bulb up in a ceiling fixture is not convenient to change. And “most standard LED dimmers” is not a tested list; the listing does not state a minimum dim level or enclosed-fixture rating.

Pros

  • Five color temperatures in one bulb
  • 90+ CRI and damp rating
  • Three-year warranty

Cons

  • Color switch needs the bulb out of the fixture
  • No stated dimming floor or tested dimmers
  • Enclosed-fixture use not stated

Shape / base A21 (larger than A19), about 4.8 in tall; E26; 6-pack
Model / warranty OM100DM/5CCTCA/LED/6; 3-year manufacturer warranty

Feit OM100DM/5CCTCA — A21, 1600 lm, 17.5W, 5CCT 2700–5000K, damp rated, E26, 15,000 hr, 3-yr warranty

The Only “100W Equivalent” Here That Reaches the 1,600-Lumen Mark

Three listings call themselves 100-watt equivalents. ENERGY STAR’s brightness chart sets 1,600 lumens as the minimum to replace a 100-watt incandescent. This Feit A21 states 1,600 lumens. The GOZIG 100W-equivalent listing states 1,500 lumens, and the Brightever 100W-equivalent states 1,100 lumens, which is the chart’s figure for a 75-watt bulb. If you are replacing old 100-watt bulbs in a kitchen or garage and want the same brightness, the lumen number is the one to trust, not the “equivalent” label.

It shares the five-step color switch and damp rating of the A19 5CCT. The A21 shape is a bit larger than a standard A19, so check that it clears the shade or globe on your fixture.

Brighter bulbs also mean more heat and a bigger load on a dimmer. Many dimmers carry a lower maximum rating for LED loads than for incandescent, so add up the wattage of every bulb on the circuit. The listing does not state a CRI or an enclosed-fixture rating.

Pros

  • States a full 1,600 lumens
  • Five color settings
  • Damp rated, three-year warranty

Cons

  • Larger A21 size may not fit every shade
  • CRI not stated
  • Higher wattage adds dimmer load

Rated life 25,000 hours per listing
Model / warranty LR21421-4; 2-year warranty; 4-pack

LUXRITE LR21421 — A19, 800 lm, 9W, 3000K, dims to 10%, enclosed rated, UL listed, ENERGY STAR named, 2-yr warranty

The Only Listing That Pairs an Enclosed-Fixture Rating With UL and ENERGY STAR

Closed globes, ceiling domes and sealed outdoor fixtures trap heat, and ENERGY STAR notes that heat management is the single most important factor in how long an LED lasts. Only three listings here say they work in enclosed fixtures: two Linkind pack sizes and this LUXRITE. Of those, the LUXRITE is the only one that also names a UL listing and ENERGY STAR, and it states a dimming range down to 10 percent.

The 3000K color is a hair cooler than the 2700K most bulbs here offer, a useful middle ground for a hallway dome or a kitchen ceiling light where pure warm white can look dingy. The listing says the bulb suits indoor and outdoor use.

The listing does not give a CRI figure or name specific dimmers. Its 25,000-hour life claim is high next to the Feit bulbs’ 15,000 hours, but rated life is a prediction rather than a guarantee, and the warranty is 2 years.

Pros

  • Enclosed-fixture rating stated
  • UL and ENERGY STAR named
  • Stated 10 percent dimming floor

Cons

  • No CRI figure
  • No tested-dimmer list
  • Smaller 4-pack

Dimming Works with most dimmer switches per listing
Rated life Up to 13.7 years at 3 hours per day
Ratings named Not stated in listing
Model / warranty 42977; 5-year warranty; 4-pack

GE Relax HD 42977 — A19, 800 lm, 10W, soft white, dimmable on most dimmers, 13.7-yr rated life, 5-yr warranty

The Longest Warranty of Any Listing Here

Stated warranties on this shelf run from none at all (the Amazon Basics listings do not mention one) through 1 year on the filament bulbs, 2 to 3 years on most others, up to 5 years on this GE. A long warranty is a practical hedge on bulbs that you may run on a dimmer every night, because dimming problems often show up months in, not on day one.

GE positions the Relax HD line for living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms, and the listing says it renders bolder colors and contrast than standard LED bulbs. It also says these bulbs work with most dimmer switches.

The listing is thin on numbers. It does not state an exact kelvin rating, CRI, dimming floor, enclosed-fixture rating or safety listing, and at 10 watts for 800 lumens it is slightly less efficient than the 8 to 9 watt bulbs above. Choose it for the warranty and the brand’s support, not for the spec sheet.

Pros

  • Five-year warranty
  • Warm soft white for living spaces
  • Claims broad dimmer compatibility

Cons

  • No kelvin or CRI number stated
  • 10 watts, a little less efficient
  • Smaller 4-pack

Why we like it

  • Only listing that names specific dimmer brands
  • Clear filament look for open cages and pendants
  • UL listed per the listing
  • Stated 10 to 100 percent dimming
Specification Details

TJOY ST19WW2700-12 — ST58 clear filament, 800 lm, 8W, 2700K, CRI 80+, dims 10–100%, UL/FCC, E26, 1-yr warranty

The Only Listing That Names Dimmer Brands It Works With

Five listings on the shelf are clear filament “Edison” bulbs: two TJOY ST58 pack sizes, a TJOY A19 filament, dalattin and DAYBETTER. Of all 17 dimmable listings, this TJOY 12-pack is the only one that names actual dimmer families, Lutron and Caseta, and points to specific compatible models. Every other listing uses phrases like “most dimmers” or “95 percent of dimmers,” which tell you nothing about the switch already on your wall.

The filament look suits fixtures where the bulb is on display: open cages, clear glass pendants and bare-bulb sconces. Clear glass shows any shimmer or flicker more than frosted glass, so dimming behavior matters more here. The listing states no visible flicker and low noise across the 10 to 100 percent range.

The trade-offs are the 80+ CRI, a 1-year warranty and the taller ST58 shape, which will not fit under every shade. The listing does not say whether the bulb is rated for enclosed fixtures.

Pros

  • Names Lutron and Caseta compatibility
  • Vintage clear-glass look
  • UL listed, 12-pack

Cons

  • One-year warranty
  • CRI 80+, not 90
  • Tall shape may not fit shades

Linkind A19 — 800 lm, 9W, 2700K, CRI 80, LED-dimmer guidance, not 3-way, enclosed rated, ETL/FCC, 2-yr warranty

The Most Candid Listing About What Can Go Wrong

Most listings simply promise no flicker. The Linkind listing tells you when flicker is likely: it recommends an LED-rated dimmer and warns that an older halogen-type dimmer may cause flickering or buzzing at low settings. It also states that the bulb is not compatible with three-way fixtures or three-way dimmer switches. Only three listings on the shelf mention three-way limits at all (two Linkind pack sizes and Brightever), and this kind of honesty helps buyers avoid the most common dimmable-LED complaint.

It is also one of three listings that say the bulb works in enclosed fixtures, and it names ETL and FCC certification. The 2700K output is the classic warm incandescent look.

The trade-offs are CRI 80 and a single color temperature. Like most listings, it gives no specific dimming floor percentage.

Pros

  • Clear dimmer-type and 3-way guidance
  • Enclosed-fixture use stated
  • ETL listed, sold in 6 and 24 packs

Cons

  • CRI 80
  • No stated dimming floor
  • Warm 2700K only in this listing

Why dimmable LEDs flicker, buzz or drop out

An incandescent bulb is a simple resistor: lower the voltage and it glows less. An LED bulb has a small electronic driver inside its base that converts household power for the LEDs, and that driver has to interpret what the dimmer is doing. When the driver and the dimmer do not agree, you see the familiar problems.

  • Flicker or shimmer at low settings: the dimmer’s lowest output is below what the bulb’s driver can hold steady.
  • Buzzing: often from older dimmers designed for incandescent loads; the Linkind listing specifically warns about halogen-type dimmers.
  • Dead travel: the bulbs go out before the slider reaches the bottom, or barely change over the top half of the range.
  • Ghosting: a faint glow when the switch is off, from small leakage current in some dimmers.

ENERGY STAR states it plainly: not every LED light works well with every dimmer switch. Its advice is to check the dimmer maker’s website for recommended bulbs when using an existing dimmer, and if you cannot find a good match, consider replacing the dimmer. For a deeper walk-through of symptoms and fixes, see our guide to dimmable LED bulbs.

Matching bulbs to the dimmer you have

  1. Pull the dimmer’s faceplate and note the brand and model printed on the device.
  2. Look up that model’s LED compatibility list and its maximum LED wattage.
  3. Add up the wattage of every bulb the dimmer controls and stay under the LED rating.
  4. Buy one pack of a candidate bulb, test the full range at night and only then buy in bulk.
  5. Use one bulb model per dimmer; mixing brands on one circuit is a common cause of uneven dimming.

Lumens, color temperature and CRI

ENERGY STAR measures brightness in lumens, not watts, and lists these minimums for replacing incandescent bulbs: 450 lumens for 40 watts, 800 for 60 watts, 1,100 for 75 watts, 1,600 for 100 watts and 2,600 for 150 watts. Its advice is to find the lumens you need and then pick the lowest wattage that delivers them. On this shelf, the “100W equivalent” claims range from 1,100 to 1,600 lumens, so read the lumen figure rather than the equivalence label.

Color temperature is in kelvin. ENERGY STAR describes 2200K to 3000K as matching incandescent warmth, 3500K to 4100K as whiter and 5000K to 6500K as bluer white. Some LEDs are designed to warm as they dim, imitating incandescent bulbs, but none of the seven listings above claims that feature, so expect these bulbs to hold roughly the same color as they get dimmer.

CRI, the color rendering index, describes how naturally a light source shows colors; 100 is the reference. Most listings here state 80, three state 90 or higher, and several do not state it. For kitchens, bathrooms and anywhere people judge color, 90 is worth seeking out.

ENERGY STAR, enclosed fixtures and safety listings

Only two of 17 listings here mention ENERGY STAR, and there is a reason. ENERGY STAR explains that efficient LED bulbs have become the standard and that, because inefficient bulbs are no longer available for most household uses, the EPA ended the ENERGY STAR program for the most common lighting products, keeping the label only for high-performing recessed downlights. You may still see the logo on bulbs packed before that change. Today, a bulb’s lumens per watt and its stated ratings tell you more than the logo does.

Enclosed-fixture ratings matter for domes, globes and sealed outdoor lights. ENERGY STAR notes that heat shortens LED life and that thermal management is the most important factor in how long an LED performs. Only three listings here state enclosed-fixture use, so for a closed globe, choose one of them.

A safety listing from a recognized lab (UL, ETL or CSA) shows a bulb was evaluated against an electrical safety standard. Four of the 17 dimmable listings name UL and three name ETL, a minority of the shelf. The U.S. Fire Administration also advises using bulbs that match the recommended wattage on the lamp or fixture; LEDs draw far less than old incandescent bulbs, so they keep fixtures well under their labeled maximum.

When the problem is the wiring, not the bulb

Swapping bulbs fixes most dimming complaints, but some symptoms point to the circuit. Lights that flicker on several circuits at once, dimmers that feel hot to the touch, a burning smell, buzzing from the switch box or lights that brighten when a large appliance starts all call for an electrician. The USFA reports an estimated 24,200 residential building electrical fires in 2021, causing an estimated 295 deaths and 900 injuries, so do not ignore heat or odor at a switch.

Many older Front Range homes have dimmers installed decades ago for incandescent loads. Replacing one is a modest job for a licensed electrician, and it often fixes LED flicker for good. Our guide to hiring an electrical contractor covers what to ask, and the broader hiring process guide explains how to compare bids. Low-voltage accent lighting, such as LED step lights, has its own driver and dimming rules. Buying a home? A home inspection will note warm or failing switches, open boxes and other wiring defects before closing.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my dimmable LED bulbs flicker?

Flicker usually means the bulb's internal driver and the dimmer are not a good match, especially on older dimmers designed for incandescent bulbs or at the lowest settings. Check the dimmer maker's LED compatibility list, keep the total LED load under the dimmer's LED rating, and consider an LED-rated dimmer.

Can I use dimmable LED bulbs on a regular switch?

Yes. Dimmable LED bulbs work normally on a standard on-off switch. The reverse is the problem: non-dimmable LEDs should not be used on a dimmer, because they can flicker, buzz or fail early.

Do dimmable LED bulbs work with three-way switches?

Standard three-way switches that only turn lights on and off from two locations work with dimmable bulbs. Three-way bulbs with two filaments and some three-way dimmer setups are different; several listings, such as Linkind and Brightever, state they are not compatible with three-way fixtures or dimmers.

How many lumens should a dimmable LED bulb have?

Match the old bulb you are replacing. ENERGY STAR lists 800 lumens as the minimum to replace a 60-watt incandescent and 1,600 lumens for a 100-watt bulb. Some listings labeled 100-watt equivalent state as little as 1,100 lumens, so read the lumen figure.

Are ENERGY STAR LED bulbs better?

The ENERGY STAR label once separated efficient bulbs from poor ones, but ENERGY STAR now says efficient LED bulbs are the standard and the program for the most common lighting products has ended. Compare lumens per watt, CRI, enclosed-fixture ratings, safety listings and warranty instead.
