Strengths

Not a substitute for a multimeter. NCV testers indicate voltage presence; they do not measure voltage value. For applications requiring known voltage levels (verifying 240V vs 120V, troubleshooting voltage drops), a multimeter with proper test leads is required.

Requires periodic verification. Test against a known voltage source (a working outlet) before relying on a negative result. Battery degradation or sensor degradation can affect performance.
