The Tjernlund PVC4 is a radon mitigation fan that connects directly to 4-inch Schedule 40 PVC and ships with a 6-foot power cord. It is aimed at sub-slab systems over a range of soil types, from dirt to gravel, according to the listing. Its distinguishing feature is construction: where most competing radon fans on Amazon use plastic housings, the PVC4 lists a heavy-duty galvanized steel housing, a backward-inclined steel impeller, custom-fitted gaskets and an adjustable discharge hood for balancing the system.

How It Compares

The Only Fan Among 18 Similar Listings Built With a Steel Housing

We read 18 similar listings, all radon-related. Eleven are fans or fan kits: the RadonAway RP145, three Festa AMG Maverick listings, a MIDCVFRUN two-speed kit, two PCLINE 190-CFM listings, two FixOasis 260-CFM listings, the xyfair PF-100 and an aftermarket Tjernlund-compatible replacement. None of them mentions steel or galvanized construction; the two FixOasis listings describe polymer PVC material instead. The other listings are vent caps, coupling and manometer kits, a Tjernlund replacement hood and a condensate bypass.

The trade-off is in what the newer import fans state and the PVC4 does not. Six of the 18 listings claim an IP67 waterproof rating, and most of the newer fans quote airflow between 190 and 260 CFM. The xyfair PF-100 lists an eight-year warranty and an ETL listing, and the Festa listings state five years. The PVC4 listing gives no airflow figure, no warranty term and no indoor or outdoor rating, so those points need checking with the manufacturer or installer.

The PVC4 is also notably compact at roughly 6.8 by 6.5 by 6.4 inches and 3 pounds, while the RP145 and Festa Maverick listings give footprints of about 9.7 and 12 inches.

Who It’s For — and Who Should Skip It

The PVC4 suits systems where a certified mitigator prefers a compact metal-housed fan, where space near the pipe is tight, or where an existing Tjernlund unit is being replaced. The adjustable discharge hood gives installers a way to tune the system.

Skip it if published airflow, a waterproof rating or a long stated warranty are deciding factors; several import fans on the same shelf document those points more fully. It is also not a substitute for professional diagnostics on difficult soils.

Using It at Home

Along the Front Range, fans belong outside conditioned living space, typically in a garage, attic or on an exterior wall, with the discharge carried above the roofline. Fan choice depends on sub-slab conditions, so leave selection, installation and any electrical work to an NRPP- or NRSB-certified mitigator; the EPA explains how to find a certified radon mitigation professional.

  • Check the system’s U-tube manometer monthly. Uneven fluid columns mean the fan is drawing suction; level columns suggest it has stopped or the pipe is blocked.
  • Make sure the plug stays seated and the circuit has not tripped, especially after storms.
  • Retest radon after installation and every couple of years.

If the manometer reads level, the fan starts rattling, or a retest stays elevated, contact us for a retest or referral.
