Capillary fingerstick screening vs venous confirmation

Capillary fingerstick (or heelstick) — the screening method

Venous draw — the confirmation method

Follow-up testing after elevated results
Children with confirmed venous blood lead at or above 3.5 µg/dL receive a follow-up testing schedule. For levels 3.5 to 19.9 µg/dL, retesting at 1 to 3 month intervals is typical until levels stabilize or decline. For levels above 20 µg/dL, monthly retesting is common during the active exposure-reduction period. Lead has a half-life of about 30 days in blood but much longer in bone, so blood lead may fluctuate as bone stores remobilize.
