Smaller than that, on non-porous or sealed surfaces, in a household without high-risk occupants, is typically homeowner-scoped. Color does not change this threshold. A “black” mold patch of 4 square feet is no more or less serious than a green or white mold patch of the same size in the same location.

Photo identification is unreliable

Sending a photograph to a contractor for “free identification” is not a real diagnostic. Reputable inspectors will tell you that species cannot be determined from photographs and that the homeowner remediation decision usually does not require species identification.
