The most useful answer to “how much is a thermal camera” is not a flat dollar figure. It is a description of the consumer-to-prosumer cliff that splits the market roughly at $1,500 in 2026. Below the cliff, cameras are accessories and DIY tools — fun, sometimes useful, but not built for billable work. Above the cliff, cameras are professional instruments with full radiometric workflow. The price gap is real and meaningful, and most buyers either stop below it or cross it cleanly. The cliff: where consumer ends and pro begins

Three things change abruptly at the $1,500 price point:

$250 to $500: Phone attachments

FLIR One Pro, FLIR One Edge, Seek Compact Pro, Topdon TC001, Hikmicro Mini2. Detector resolution 160×120 to 320×240. NETD 70 to 100 mK. These cameras plug into a phone and use it as display, processor, and battery. Quality is genuinely better than the phone-attachment cameras of five years ago — radiometric capture works, MSX-style visible-light overlay sharpens edges, and the apps produce useful images.

Where the cliff comes from

The price step is not arbitrary brand positioning. It reflects three real cost drivers:

First, the chassis. A drop-rated, IP54-or-better, glove-friendly pistol-grip body costs noticeably more to engineer and manufacture than a smartphone-form pocket imager. Tolerances, sealing, materials, and the trigger mechanism all add cost.

How buyers cross the cliff over time

Many buyers cross the cliff in stages rather than all at once.
