Watch for substrate effects. Metal fasteners under the surface throw pinless readings off — the capacitance plate sees the metal as moisture. Move at least 2 to 3 inches away from any nail, screw, or fastener. Hollow-core doors, cabinet veneer, and thin substrates can also confuse pinless readings because the plate sees through to whatever is behind the wood.

Troubleshooting common problems

Problem: meter reads zero on obviously wet wood. Cause: pins are not fully seated, the battery is low, or the meter is in pinless mode while you are using the pins (on combo meters). Re-seat the pins, replace the battery, and verify the mode setting.

Problem: pinless reading varies wildly across a small area. Cause: hidden fasteners or substrate variation under the surface. Move to a clear area at least 2 to 3 inches from any fastener and try again. Mark the high-reading spots and investigate the cause.

Problem: readings are higher than expected after long storage. Cause: meter has not been used in months, calibration drifted, or the battery is corroded. Replace the battery, run the built-in calibration check, and verify against a known reference block.

Worked example: checking framing after a basement flood
